Malaysia is a multicultural country. There are many festivals celebrated
here in Malaysia. The Muslims celebrates the Hari Raya Puasa. They will

month of January or February. They will have a family reunion dinner.

Every Friday evening Encik Kamal will visit his parents 3nd have dinner with them.
They return home late at night, "Three thieves hid near the couple’s house and
waited for hem to return. When Encik Kamal opened the front door, they rushed up
to them with parangs. “Help!” "Help” screamed Mrs. Kamal.
They tied up the couple. They searched the house for money and valuable things.
Ahmad, the gardener, woke up when he heard Mrs. Kamal screamed.
He peeped out and saw the thieves. “I must get help!” he thought. Quietly he sneaked
out of the house. Just then a police patrol car passed by, at once Ahmad stopped it.
He told the police what happened. The police surrounded the house and caught the
thieves. Mr. Kamal was grateful to the gardener for saving their life.

Tug of war competition

Last month Sekolah Kebangsaan USJ entered its team for a tug-of-war competition
with Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Intan. Weeks before the competition the boys of
Sekolah Kebangsaan USJ team started practicing hard.
On that day of the competition, the team from Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Intan
arrived at Sekolah Kebangsaan USJ in a bus. To everyone’s surprise, these boys were
much taller and bigger than the boy’s of the Sekolah Kebangsaan USJ. “We will
surely lose,” said Rama, a member of the team. “We must try our best than.”

He went to look for the man. He saw a girl inside the building. Mr. Ramli described
the man to her. She took him to the manager’s office. At once Mr. Ramli recognized
him as the man who had sat in his taxi.
He returned the money to him. “Thank you very much, “said Mr. Lim. “You are an
honest man. Mr. Lim offered Mr. Ramli a job. Now he has a better job and is earning

A new boy in school

Jimmy and his family had just moved into their new house and ere going to a new
school. “Goodbye mother! Goodbye, Father!” Jimmy shouted as he cycled off on his
new bicycle.
Suddenly Jimmy’s bicycle knocked into a stone. Jimmy fell into a puddle of muddy
water. His clothes and bag were wet and muddy. He got up and cycled home again.
His parents were not at home. So he had to cycle back to school in his dirty clothes.

The mat makers

Malek and Ali are mat makers. They lived next door to each other. Malek enjoyed his
work. He uses the best straw and dye for his mats. He wove with great care so he
often took weeks to finish a mat.
Ali was just the opposite of Malek. He made mats very quickly and sold more mats
than Malek did. So he was very rich. “Why do you waste your time matching straws”?
“You take so long to make a mat,” said Ali to Malek.
“Why don’t you use cheap straws?” That is why you don’t have any mats to sell.
Malek only shook his head each time. “I would rather make one good mat than ten
ugly ones,” he said.
One morning a villager wanted to buy some mats. He came to Malek’s house and saw

A night in the car

One night, I was returning home with my brother in his car from a mid-night show.

They waited for few hours and the boat was slowly sinking. Boon was afraid that he
will not be saved. His dad told him not to be afraid. They had to bear the heat of the
sun and Boon was very thirsty. However Boon and his dad continued to wave the
“S.O.S" flag until a fishing boat saw the flag and went to their aid.
They were saved and brought to shore. Boon and his father was brought to the
hospital by the lifeguard. They stayed in the hospital for several days for treatment.
Boon’s dad contacted his wife and they told what had happen to them.

Puan Munah and her husband has a fruit stall near their flats where they lived. One
afternoon she went home as usual to have lunch. Her husband was left in charge of

drawers. Puan Munah screamed, “Help!” Help” The thief quickly dashed out of the

the door at the bottom of the staircase was locked. The thief became desperate and

Meanwhile Puan Munah’s neighbour heard her screams and came to help. They ran
towards the thief who was then scrambling over a balcony to get away. Mr. Lee, one
of the neighbours, quickly grabbed his legs. As a result, the other part of the thief’s
body was left hanging over the balcony.
Puan Munah ran down stairs and saw two policemen on a patrol car. “Quick!”
“There’s a thief upstairs!” The policemen raced upstairs and arrested the thief. They
took him to the police station. Puan Munah had a frightening experience.

Making “kain songket” is a traditional art. It is a type of woven material worn by

together. It is woven on a machine called ‘kek’. Firstly, threads of silk or cotton is

dropped Yoko’s tiny clogs again.

him if he pretends to be death. Ali was happy for Abu for being smart and pretending
to be death. It was getting late; Abu and Ali decide to go home.
92. The farmer's son

There was a farmer who lived in the countryside. He owns a farm where he rarest
hundreds of hens and ducks. The eggs hatched into chickens and ducks which the
farmer sold in the market.
The farmer had two sons called Razak and Ramli. Razak is hard working and always
helped his father. But Ramli was lazy and hated to work. Every Sunday the farmer
will take one of his sons to their grandparent’s house. Someone has to stay back to
feed the chickens and ducks. The boys loved going to their grandparent’s house.
One Sunday Ramli asked, May I go to grandparent’s house Father? Father said no to
him because he went last Friday. You must stay at home and feed the hens and
ducks. Ramli was angry. He ran into the house and went to bed. He did not come out
even when it was time to feed the hens and ducks. The birds were hungry and made a
lot of noise but Ramli did not get up.
When father came back, he was very angry with Ramli and scolded Ramli. The next
Sunday Ramli got into the truck but the farmer asked him to get down. I know why
you said that father. Today I’ll stay at home and feed the hens and ducks. I’ll go next
Sunday. The farmer was proud of his son.

Pahang Darul Makmur, Terengganu Darul Imam and Kelantan Darul Naim are
beautiful states. These states are from the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Desaru has a 25 kilometer stretch of beach. It has green countryside, clear waterfalls
and calm lakes. All these attract many holiday makers. Tanjung Jara lies 6U
kilometer south of Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu Darul Iman. It is
about an hour’s drive from Kuala Terengganu, is on the main trunk road and is a

Rantau Abang also lies on the sandy beach of Terenganu Darul Iman. It is a few
kilometers from Dungun. It is the home of the giant turtles. The turtles swim up from
the South China Sea in the early hours of the morning. They lay their eggs before
dawn and then disappear.
Taman Negara is the home of one of the oldest rain forest in the world. It lies across
the Kelantan - Pahang Darul Makmur border although a large part of it is in Pahang
Darul Makmur. It is a natural resort. Many trees, plants, flowers and animals can be
found there.

98. Labu Sayong
Perak is a well known for its tembikar (pottery) or earthenware which is a folk craft
carried out by farmers when they are not working in the fields. Sayong, situated near
ala Kangsar Kangsar, is famous for its black jars known as “Labu Sayang” or water
vessels. Reddish jars with patterns on them are made in Pulau Tiga, South of Ipoh.
The clay used to make the Labu Sayong is obtained from river beds or river banks
and is white, black or yellow in color. The process of pot making includes the
pounding and sieving of clay followed by the shaping of a clay jar using the potter’s
wheel or the ‘coil and pinch’ method.
For the finish, a round pebble is used to smooth the jar and give it the shiny look.
Then patterns are engraved on the jars. The pots are then ‘fired’ twice, the second
time at a higher temperature. After this, the pots which are still hot are covered with
paddy husks which give them the black finish and glazed look.
In the olden days, these ceramic pots were used to store water. Today, this fine craft
of the Malay potter is used to decorate homes in towns and villages.

A Visit to Langkawi Island

During the last school holidays, my family and I went to Langkawi island. We have to
travel in a ferry to get to the island.

Some are very colourful and beautiful. Some look quite strange.

Last Sunday, my father took the whole family to the zoo. There were all types of

They performed many tricks. When they performed well, their trainers reword

When they got there, Siti and her sister rushed to the playground. They played on the
swing and slides. Their father watched them play.
Siti’s mother unpacked the picnic basket. She brought sandwiches, burgers and
orange juice.
After they ate some food, they walked around the lake. There were many trees in the
park. It was shady and nice,

A Flood
Last Monday it rained heavily. Our village was flooded. The water came up to my
knees.
A motor boat came to our house. We were taken to the nearby school. The school was

On the way to the school, we saw some people on a raft. They waved to us when we
passed by.
Some people waded in the water. One man carried a radio on his head. Another
woman carried a big bag.
We all stayed in the school until the water level went down. Then we went home to
clean up our house.

An honest Boy
Samy, Firuz and Lee Sin are playing football. Samy kicks the ball hard. It goes over to
his neighour’s house. The ball hits a flower pot. The pot breaks.
The boys are afraid. They run into Sarny’s house to hide. They peep from behind the
curtains. Sarny’s neighbour, Mrs Tan comes oirt of the house. When she sees the
broken pot, she looks angry.
Samy comes out from his house. He says sorry to Mrs Tan for breaking her pot.
Mrs Tan smiles and says, “I am glad you confessed. I am not angry now. You are an
honest boy.”

Chinese New Year

Last month was Chinese New Year. I put on my new clothes and wished my parents
Happy New Year. They gave me an “ang pow” each.
We visited our grandparents. My cousins were also there with their parents. I
received “ang pows” from my grandparents, aunts and uncles.
My cousins and I played board games such as Snakes and Ladders. We had a lot of
fun.
When we returned home, friends and neighbours came to visit us. We served them
cookies, orange and drinks.
It was a very happy occasion.

Teacher’s Day.
Yesterday was Teacher’s Day. We had a class party. Every student brough some food.
Some of us brought gifts for our teacher, Miss Chan. I made a card for her.
We played some games such as passing the parcel. The last person to get the parcel
received a prize.
After that our class monitor gave a speech. She thanked our teacher for teaching
us many things. Our teacher looked very happy.
Then they all had a feast. We invited the headmaster and the school clerk to join us.
Everybody enjoyed themselvers.

Mother’s Day
The second Sunday of May is Mother’s Day. This year my sister and I decided to do
something special for our mother. We woke up very early on that day.
We mixed some batter to make pancakes. While my sister fried the pancakes, I
made some tea.
At eight o’clock, breakfast was served. When she walked into the kitchen, she was
surprised to see breakfast on the table.
Mother was very happy. She thanked us and gave each of us a hug.

A Bus Ride
Last Saturday Lucy’s aunt took her for a bus ride. They wanted to go to Seremban.
They went to the bus station. There were many buses there.
After waiting for a while, they saw a bus with the sign “Seremban”. They got up the
bus. Lucy’s aunt paid the bus conductor. He gave her two tickets. There was a
television on the, bus. It was showing a James Bond movie.
The bus was air-conditioned. It was very comfortable. After two hours, the bus
reached Seremban. Lucy said, “That’s a nice bus ride. It’s like going to a cinema on
wheels.” Her aunt laughed.

A Train Ride
During the last school holidays, my family and I went to Penang. We took a train
there.
We boarded the train at the Kuala Lumpur railway station. Every carriage had two
television sets, one at each end. There was also a cafeteria on the train.
We had lunch at the cafeteria. After lunch, my sister and I fell asleep. We only woke
up when we reached Penang. It was a tiring but enjoyable journey.

A Cruise
During the year-end school holidays, my family and I went for a short cruise. The
name of the ship was Aquarius. The ship was gigantic.

On the top deck, the wind was very strong. I had to hold on to my hat to keep it
from flying away.
During the cruise, we watched a magic show. The magician was very good with his
tricks. I liked the one where he pulled a rabbit from his hat.
I enjoyed the meals served on the ship. There was plenty of good food to eat.
Time passed very quickly. Before I knew it, the two day cruise was over. I hope to go
for a longer cruise next time.

Learning to Ride a Bicycle

Last Sunday, Devi and her father went to the park. Devi was going to learn to ride a
bicycle.
First, Devi’s father held the bicycle. Devi got up the bicycle she sat down on the
saddle. She felt a little scared. Then Devi stepped on the pedals. The bicycle moved
her father still held on the back of the bicycle.
Suddenly, Devi’s father let go off the bicycle. Devi did not know. She continued to
cycle. When she stopped, she turned back to look at her father. She was surprised
that she rode the bicycle all on her own.
“Yipee! I can ride a bicycle!” shouted Devi happily.

A Narrow Escape
Yesterday I went to a nearby bookshop to buy some pencils. On the way home, I met
a pack of dogs.
The dogs were very fierce. They barked at me. I felt very afraid. One of the dogs came
near me.
An old man came out from a nearby house. He bent down to pick up some stones. He
threw the stones at the dogs. The dogs whined and ran away.
I thanked the old man for his help and ran all the way home. That was a narrow
escape.

I am a Dress
I am a pink dress. There is a big blue ribbon on my front. My mistress is a little girl
named Mei Mei. Her mother bought me for her eighth birthday.
Mei Mei loved me very much. She wore me every week. One day she accidentally tore
the blue ribbon. From then on, she didn’t like me anymore.
Mei Mei’s mother packed me with other old clothes. She donated us to an
orphanage. Another girl became my mistress. She was very happy to have me.
I am glad that I can still be used.

Local Fruits
Malaysia has many local fruits. Papaya, watermelon, guava, rambutan, banana, I like
them all. My favourite is the king of fruits, durian.
Durians are seasonal fruits. That means they are only available at certain times of
the year. Rambutans and mangosteens are also seasonal fruits.
Fruits such as bananas and papayas are available the whole year round. The banana
can be eaten in many ways. It can be made into fritters, kuih and cakes. When
served with ice cream, it is called ’’banana split.” It also tastes good as it is.
Local fruit are cheap and tasty. We should eat more of them.

To The Rescue
Ahmad was walking by the beach one evening. He was enjoying the cool sea breeze.
“Help Help” Ahmad looked around and saw someone drowning.
Ahmad could swim very well. He dived into the sea and swam towards the girl. He
dragged her to the shore.
A woman came to help Ahmad. It was the victim’s mother. She thanked him for
saving her.

A Visit To The Bookshop

On the way back from school, my mother and I stopped by the Popular Bookshop.
My mother wanted to buy a Chinese dictionary for me. While she was looking at the
dictionaries, I browsed at the children’s corner. There were many books by Enid
Blyton. She is my favourite author.
There were also many other types of books and magazines. Stationeries such as
pencils, pens and erasers were neatly arranged on shelves. I picked up a box of 2B
pencils.
My mother paid for the dictionary and pencils at the payment counter. I hope to
buy a story book the next time I come.

When Mother Was Sick

Last Saturday, my mother fell sick. She had a bad cold. She stayed in bed the whole
morning.

I cooked porridge and fried some eggs for lunch. I brought the food for my mother to
eat.
She was so pleased that I did the house chores and cooked lunch. “I am so proud of
you, Mary,” she said.

A Sweet Dream
The school bus dropped me off at my house. There was nobody at home. I let myself
into the house.

cream, pudding and fruit tarts."
“Wake up, Amir. Wake up!” my mother said.
I woke up. My mother was shaking my shoulders. It was a dream after all, a very
sweet dream indeed.

Moving House
Last Sunday my family moved to a now house. We had packed our belongings into
boxes. When the lorry came, we loaded the boxes inlo the lorry.

and I followed the lorry to our new house. Some friends were already there to help
unload the things.
The lorry had to make three trips to transport all our things. Finally, the old house
was empty. Farewell, old house. Hello, new house.

A Greedy Dog
One day, Bongo the dog found a juicy bone. He picked up the bone with his mouth.
On the way home, Bongo crossed a small bridge. He stopped at the bridge and looked
down into the water. He saw a dog holding a bone in his mouth.
Bongo wanted to have the other bone, too. He opened his mouth to bark at the other
dog. His own bone dropped into the water.
Of course, there was no other dog or bone. It was only his own reflection that
Bongo saw in the water. In the end, the greedy dog had no bone at all.

motorcycles without bumping into one another. Nasir claps his hands until they turn
red.

of the house. My father asked Mr. Rajoo to send me to school. Mr. Rajoo agreed. We
thanked him for his help.
