The mat makers

Malek and Ali are mat makers. They lived next door to each other. Malek enjoyed his
work. He uses the best straw and dye for his mats. He wove with great care so he
often took weeks to finish a mat.
Ali was just the opposite of Malek. He made mats very quickly and sold more mats
than Malek did. So he was very rich. “Why do you waste your time matching straws”?
“You take so long to make a mat,” said Ali to Malek.
“Why don’t you use cheap straws?” That is why you don’t have any mats to sell.
Malek only shook his head each time. “I would rather make one good mat than ten
ugly ones,” he said.
One morning a villager wanted to buy some mats. He came to Malek’s house and saw
Malek’s mats. He bought the mat that Malek had just finished. The villager orders
another three mats from Malek and told him to take his time to finish the mats.
Ali met the villager and told him that he could finish making mats fifthree days. But
the villager did not pay any attention to him as he knows that Ali’s mats are from the
poorest quality of straws compared to Malek’s.

77. The bee and its sting
Have you been stung by a bee before? If you have, you will know that it is quite
painful. When you are stung by a bee, pull out the sting right away. If you do this, less
poison will be able to enter the wound. Most people get a swelling. But when some
lotion is applied to the wound, the swelling goes down.
However, there are some people who are very sensitive to bee stings. If a person gets
stung he must see a doctor at once. However, bee stings are usually not dangerous
After a bee stung you, it usually dies. This is because the sting remains in your flesh.
Some parts of the bee’s body are pulled off with it. A bee cannot live on with the loss
of these parts, so it dies.
The only bee that does not die after using its sting is the queen bee. Its sting is curved
and smooth and so it can use it over and over again. However, we need not fear it.
This is because it uses its sting only on other queen bees!

Making “kain songket” is a traditional art. It is a type of woven material worn by
members of the royal family and the rich in days gone by. Nowadays it is worn by
ordinary people who can afford the price.
‘Kain Songket’ is the product of weaving threads of silk with threads of gold or silver
together. It is woven on a machine called ‘kek’. Firstly, threads of silk or cotton is
dipped into a solution to color them. When weaving silver or gold thread is passed
between silk or cotton threads. This will produce different motifs and designs on the

clothes, ‘kain songket’ is now used to make handbags, purses, cushion covers and
