INFORMATION ON EXAMINATION PAPER

Code : 013
Marks : 30 marks
Time : 1 hour 15 minutes

EXAMINATION PAPER FORMAT

This paper has two section; A and B. Section B consists of 5 main questions. All
questions must be answered in the spaces provided. It assesses various language skills.

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE

Question 21(a)

The question requires candidate to write suitable response based on each situation
shown in the picture.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

The candidate has given a perfect response based on the stimulus. It shows a polite
way to ask for help.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Answer is written in polite manner, applying the moral values (helping others) instilled in
the syllabus. It has fulfilled the requirement of the question perfectly. It shows that the
candidate understands the stimulus perfectly and putting good effort to give answer
using HOTS.

Example of Average Answer 1:

Answer is written correctly but candidate failed to use the correct punctuation. Example:
comma and question mark, which is a basic skill in the language.

Example of Average Answer 2:

Response written by the candidate is almost correct with two errors which are wrong
usage of exclamation mark and vocabulary.

The question requires candidate to write suitable response based on each situation
shown in the picture.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

The candidate shows excellent ability in using social functions (to request) according to
the stimulus given.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

The candidate could respond correctly the statement in a polite manner, (please).

Example of Average Answer 1:

Answer is written correctly but candidate failed to use the correct punctuation. Example:
question mark, thus, the function of the response has changed into a statement instead
of a question.

Example of Average Answer 2:

The candidate provides response with grammatical error. Example, omission of


definite article ‘the’.

Questions 21(c)

The question requires candidate to write suitable response based on each situation
shown in the picture.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

The candidate could use social functions (to wish) correctly according to stimulus given.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

The candidate is able to give proper response based on the stimulus. It shows that the
candidates took note of the hand gestures and apply the moral values instilled in the
syllabus like love and concern in the family.

Example of Average Answer 1:

Based on the answer, the candidate provides answer with grammatical errors. For
example, the omission of preposition ‘of’ and wrong usage of reflexive pronouns,
‘yourselves’.

Example of Average Answer 2:

The candidate has given correct answer with a word error. One word is written as two
words. i.e Your self - yourself.

For Question 22(a) and 22(b), candidates are required to read the dialogue and tick ( / )
the correct answer.

Questions 22(c)

Question 22(c) requires the candidate to list two documents needed for school
registration.

The candidate is able to write the answers correctly without spelling mistake.

Question 22(d)

Question 22(d) requires candidate to demonstrate comprehension of the text.

The candidate stats answer the first stem correctly and identify the correct sentence to
support the first answer.

Question 22(e)

Question 22(e) requires candidate to give their own opinion.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

The candidate provides good answer with logical reason. Eg. "located near her
house".

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Response given is creative with more than one reason. The candidate constructs a
compound sentence.

Example of Average Answer 1:

The candidate could express ideas but with some spelling errors.

Example of Average Answer 2:

The sentence written by the candidate fulfilled the requirement of the question,
unfortunately there is a grammatical error. That is (preposition; nearby – near or
near to).

Question 23(a) and 23(b)

Question 23(a) and 23(b) requires candidate to study the map given and respond ‘true’
or ‘false’ on the statements based on the text.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

It is obvious that the candidate understands the map well, not guessing the answers. It
also shows that the candidate understands the rubric (to state ‘true’ or ‘false’).

Question 23(c) and 23(d)

Question 23(c) and 23(d) requires candidate to circle the correct answer based on the
information in the map.

Question 23(e)

Question 23(e) requires candidate to state the place from the map and give a reason.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

Candidate shows the ability to state the place correctly with reasons they had
experienced in their daily life routine. This creative candidate uses their own words to
provide a direct, precise and excellent answer.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Candidate shows the ability to state the place correctly and writes the reason
confidently.

Example of Average Answer 1:

The candidate could state the place and give a correct reason but with a few
grammatical errors. For example; i) The candidate begins the sentence with
because which is not suitable, ii) singular/plural nouns (house – houses) and iii)
Omission of subject verb agreement.(houses are).

Example of Average Answer 2:

The candidate could state the place and give correct reason but with a few grammatical
errors. i.e.; i). singular / plural ii) Subject verb agreement. Ii) wrong usage of article.

Question 23(f)

Question 23(f) requires candidate to state reason(s).

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

Candidate could confidently give correct reason / reasons based on their daily life
routine. He/she manages to use their own words to provide excellent answers.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Candidate is able to answer the question and combine them into complex sentence.
The candidate is able to use their own words excellently.
Example of Average Answer 1:

The candidate could provide ideas but failed to write a complete sentence. The
sentence is written with structural errors,( many people works at bank).

Example of Average Answer 2:

This example shows an incomplete sentence with some errors. i.e.; It starts with the
word ‘because’, ii) because, wrongly spelt. iii) Omission of preposition "to" and article
"the".

Question 24(a)

Question 24(a) requires candidate to respond based on the passage.

Example of Excellent Answer:

The candidate tick ( / ) correctly as they understand the text.

Question 24(b)

Question 24(b) requires the candidate to select the most suitable answer based on the
information given.

Example of Excellent Answer:

Candidates who understand the word ‘bear’ could give the correct answer.

Question 25(a)

Question 25(a) requires candidate to give two words to describe the durian tree.

Example of Excellent Answer:

Based on the example given, candidate shows that they understand the requirement
of the question and gives two correct adjectives.

Question 25(b)

Based on the story, candidates are required to give their opinion about the durian tree.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

Good opinion related to the question is provided by the candidate. The reason is stated
nicely. Also, the candidate writes a compound sentence using conjunction; because,
and and.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Candidate refers to the ‘text read’ to get answers. The candidate uses own words to
provide direct and precise answer.

Example of Average Answer 1:

The candidate could give the correct answer but failed to use tenses and comparison
correctly. Eg; didn’t bowed – didn’t bow, is - was.

Example of Average Answer 2:

The candidate failed to use correct tenses. i.e.; thinks - thought, is - was.

Question 25(c)

Question 25(c) requires the candidates to respond to a suggestion whether to agree or


disagree. Next, the candidates are required to provide reason(s) on why they
agree/disagree.

Example of Excellent Answer 1:

The candidate agreed with the statement given and the reasons given are creative and
related to their daily life experience.

Example of Excellent Answer 2:

Candidate lifted the sentences from the text and add his/her own sentence to
strengthen the answer.

Example of Average Answer 1:

The candidate agrees with the statement but fails to give a reason.

Example of Average Answer 2:

The candidate answers the first part of the question correctly but fails to provide a reason
or the reason given is unclear because of direct lifting from the text.

SUGGESTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES

1. Aware of current issues.


2. Make a draft of ideas and combine them into compound sentence correctly.
3. Do a lot of reading to increase vocabulary and to give variety to sentence structures.
4. Observe the pictures and read the text to get full understanding of the situation and
text. Then choose the most suitable and correct answer that fits the question.
5. Read and understand the requirement of the questions.
6. Try to use good expressions/vocabulary instead of common ones to show the
difference of ability.
7. Understand the requirement of the question, and then use their own words to
express the ideas instead of copying directly from the text.
8. Make full use of the dictionary.

SUGGESTIONS TO THE TEACHERS

1. Expose the students to as many general knowledge as possible.


2. Cover all the units in the text book to give students a clear picture of the syllabus.
3. Give as many exercises as possible, especially for Question 21, where they need to
know the proper and correct response to different situations.
4. Expose the students to variety of HOTS questions, for example, giving opinion,
giving reasons, making choices and give supporting details.
5. Use dictionary in the classroom.
6. Encourage brainstorming activities in the classroom.
7. Encourage students to discuss the task given or an issue in groups to enable them
to provide creative ideas.
