Brand/Make ____________________Model ___________________Year _____________ Engine ________________ Transmission _____________ Mileage_______________ 1. Technician verifies that the engine oil level is within the proper range on the dipstick and that the oil is a normal color and viscosity. Oil Level: ____________________________ Oil Condition: _____________________________ 2. Technician verifies the customer complaint and checks for any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB’S) and/or software updates that pertain to the symptoms(s). Note: This issue may be a known pattern failure that has been addressed by the factory engineers who have compiled a specific repair procedure that involves updated parts and/or software. Complaint Verified: Yes ______No: _______Bulletins:_________________________________ 3. Technician records all stored Body Control Module (BCM) diagnostic codes BCM Codes: ____________________________________________________________________ In addition to retrieving the diagnostic code(s) the technician performs a complete systems scan of all the vehicle computers to determine if other computer systems are contributing to the illumination of the oil light. Example: The PCM may have fault codes that pertain to the engine oil light issue. Other Vehicle Codes: ____________________________________________________________ 4. Technician documents all of the Freeze Frame Information for all of the stored codes. Note: Freeze Frame is a data 'movie', very much like an aircraft ‘in flight’ recorder, that saves the Power Train operating conditions when a BCM code or other system code was triggered. Freeze Frame Data: _____________________________________________________________ 5. Technician performs a mechanical gauge oil pressure test at idle and at 2500 rpm IF and ONLY IF the idle oil pressure is well within the factory specified range.
Idle Oil Pressure Reading: ___________________ Factory Spec: _______________________ 2500 Rpm Oil Pressure Reading:_______________ Factory Spec: _______________________ Tech Info: Perform the mechanical gauge oil pressure inspections when the engine is warmed up and at normal operating temperature. Note: If the mechanical gauge oil pressure test reads below factory specification then the engine oiling system will need to inspected and mechanical repairs will need to be performed 6. Technician performs an engine oil light circuit test by turning the key on and verifies that the the oil light illuminates. Technician starts the vehicle and verifies that the oil light goes out. Inspection Results: _______________________________________________________________ 7. If the vehicle uses an oil pressure gauge, the technician performs an oil gauge test by turning the key on and watching the gauge needle move from the rest position and than verifies that the gauge is reading pressure by starting the engine and verifies that the gauge rises and reads pressure at idle and at 2500 rpm. Gauge Inspection Results:_______________ Idle Pressure: _________ 2500 rpm: ____________ 8.Technician test drives the vehicle with a data streaming scan tool and duplicates the operating conditions that were recorded in the Freeze Frame(s) and verifies the code condition, if possible. During this Test Drive He/She evaluates the over all condition of the engine as well as the over all condition of the vehicle i.e. the engine runs rough, engine overheats, has a lack of power, poor idle, improper transmission operation, brakes are unsafe etc. and documents the results. Test Drive Results: _______________________________________________________________ 9. The Technician studies and writes down the code setting parameters. This is to ensure that the technician is clear on what data values the computers are evaluating when they trigger the code(s) as well as any other system codes that may contribute to the illumination of the engine oil light. Parameters: _____________________________________________________________________ 10. Technician diagnoses the cause of the code(s) and/or the reason(s) for the illumination of the engine oil light and makes the proper repair recommendations. Repair Recommendations: __________________________________________________________ 11. Once the oil light repair is complete, the technician performs a Drive Cycle Test Drive to ensure that the engine oil light problem and any code(s) have been properly repaired. Drive Cycle Completes free of codes: Yes_____ No_____ Codes: _________________________
