Should prostitution be legal or illegal?

Prostitution is a topic that is very commonly argued about. For example people argue

whether it should be legal or illegal. But prostitution should not be legal because it is not always

the prostitutes choice, it is often the very last resort for a job, and it can lead to abuse of women.

Prostitution is often not the Prostitutes choice. In prostitution, most believe that all

prostitutes choose to be there but that is not always true. Some prostitutes are forced into

prostitution. In the article “Top 10 reasons prostitution should be illegal” by Dave Anderson it

states “Women working in the brothels are kept practically imprisoned, allowed to leave only

when in the presence of their pimp.” Most women who are in prostitution are often forced into it

by vicious pimps and those women are usually end up being sex trafficked which brings the

emotion of anger due to the fact that some women are being forced to have sex with other men.

Prostitution is often the very last resort for people when it comes to jobs and making

money. Some people become prostitutes due to the fact they have no money and they need to pay

bills or purchase items. In the article “Prostitution should not be legalized” by Fredy Tlatenchi it

states “Prostitution is a job few want and often a last resort for those systematically

disenfranchised by society” People who become deprived by society are often pulled directly in

the direction of prostitution which is logical because they will try to fit in best they can.

Prostitution can lead to the abuse of women. Some women can be recruited or forced into

prostitution by vicious pimps which can lead to abuse. In the text “Top 10 reasons prostitution
should be illegal.” by Dave Anderson it states “73% of prostitutes who responded to one survey

reported that they had been the victim of a physical assault during their work and 67%

experience post-traumatic stress disorder.” some prostitutes have suffered from abuse and can be

victims of rape which brings fear of prostitution itself and also being forced into prostitution by a

vicious pimp.

But on the other hand prostitution should be legal due to the fact that if prostitution was

legal then people would feel more comfortable approaching the police to report violence and

abuse without having to worry about getting arrested for taking part in prostitution. For example

in the text “Title: Catherine Healy Biography” By:Catherine Healy it states “Since the change in

the law, people feel they can approach the police and report violence.” Which makes sense but

people will refuse to tell the police due to the fact that they fear pimps and they do not want

become more abused. Abuse often leads to fear because they feel as if no one can help and if

they tell someone then the abuse gets worse. But in the article “Buying sex should not be legal.”

by Rachel Moran it states “The effort to decriminalize the sex trade worldwide is not a

progressive movement. Implementing this policy will simply calcify into law men’s entitlement

to buy sex, while decriminalizing pimping will protect no one but the pimps.” If prostitution

were to becomes legal then instead of saving the prostitutes, you are only expose them to more

dangers of being abused.

In conclusion Prostitution should not be legalized because some people do not always

choose to be prostitutes they are forced into prostitution by vicious pimp, it is often the very last

resort for a job for people who were disenfranchised by society, and it can lead to abuse and rape

of women who joined or were forced into prostitution..

Title: Buying sex should not be legal. Author: Rachel Moran. Date:August 18, 2015.

Morans article describes her personal experience in Prostitution. At the age of 14 she

became involved in prostitution due to the fact that her father committed suicide and her

mother was mentally ill. She went into prostitution expecting to receive money but she

did not. She ended up getting stuck in sex trade. This source relates to my topic because

Moran is explaining what it was like to be in prostitution and how it lead to sex trade. She

also gives reasons on why she believes in not making prostitution legal. One quote from

this article that i would like to use in my argumentative essay is when she states “a

significant proportion of buyers who purchase sex frequently have an annual income

above $120,000 and are married. Most have college degrees, and many have children.”

this quote ives relevant information on the topic and its a fact that proves that not all

buyers are drug dealers and broke drunks.

Title: top 10 reasons prostitution should be illegal. Author: Dave Anderson. Date: July 28, 2015

` Andersons article gives the top 10 reasons on why prostitution should be illegal.

Anderson talks about how not all prostitutes chose to be prostitutes, it talks about long
prostitution has been around, that legalizing prostitution will not lower the incidence of crime,

How prostitution is rape, how former prostitutes are saying that legalizing prostitution is a bad

idea, etc. This source relates to my topic because Anderson is giving relevant information that

prostitution should not be legalized since it leads up to so many other crimes like human

trafficking and recruitment and abusement of underage children. Also Anderson uses former

prostitutes as an advantage because the former prostitutes also agree that Prostitution should not

be legalized. One quote from this article that i would like to use for my argumentative essay is

when Anderson states ¨A worldwide study of the life of prostitutes showed that at least 75% had

been assaulted and over 60% raped in the course of their work.” i wanna use this quote because

what he saying is that most prostitutes are assaulted and some are raped.

Title: Prostitution should not be legalized. Author: Fredy Tlatenchi. Date: Nov 27, 2012

In this article it talks about what it is really like to be a prostitute and what former

prostitutes experienced in their jobs. It also talks about why the former prostitutes believe

that prostitution should not be legalized. This source relates to my topic because if we

better understand what prostitutes go through on the job then we can understand what it is

like for most prostitutes and we can understand if it is dangerous or not and why it should

or should not be legalized. Also the information in this article relates to my topic because

the former prostitutes talk about dangerous situations like dealing with drug addicts, etc.
One quote from the article that i would like to use for my argumentative essay is in the

text when it states “Legalization isn’t going to automatically ensure a prostitute’s safety

or better her world. It might stop them from consuming drugs on the job… but it won’t

protect them from the next coked-up client from freaking out during a session.” This

quote is saying that if prostitution becomes legal then it might stop them from doing

drugs on the job but that does not make them safe in anyway still.

Title:Should Prostitution Be Legalized? By Marist Poll Published on May 31, 2016

In this article, Marist Poll talks about most men believe that prostitution should be legal.

She also talks about why most women believe that prostitution should not be legal. This

source relates to my topic because it gives a large amount of information on what age

range of men believe prostitution is legal and what age range of women believe

prostitution should not be legal. It also relates to my topic because it gives many

percentages and lots of data and information that can be useful in persuading people to

believe prostitution should not be legalized. One piece of evidence that i would like to

use in my argumentative essay is in the text when it states “ only about one in three

women think prostitutes and their clients deserve criminal prosecution.” This is saying

that one in three women think prostitution should be illegal and that there should be

consequences.

Title: Catherine Healy Biography Author:Catherine Healy Last updated on: 1/31/2008

In this small article, Healy speaks on why she feels prostitution should be legalized. They

legalized prostitution where she lived and she talks about why she believes that it was a

good idea. This source relates to my topic because it can help with my counter-argument

which would be why prostitution should be legal. One quote that I would like to use in

my argumentative essay is when she states “Since the change in the law, people feel they

can approach the police and report violence.” This would be used for my counter

argument because she talks about how people feel more safe to confront the police about

violence and abuse without them getting arrested for being part of prostitution.
