Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

When using PowerPoint and all of its features, it’s a great way to incorporate the Universal Design for
Learning into the classroom. PowerPoint provides the basic presentation features, but can also be turned into
a video which provides audio to students who are watching the content. Students can easily learn the new
concepts and vocabulary by listening and replaying the material. PowerPoint can also be shared so there is
access to information outside the classroom.
Lesson idea implementation:
In this lesson, PowerPoint is going to be used as an e-book to help students with invented strategies and
the standard algorithm when solving addition and subtraction problems.
First, the teacher will have prepared an e-book solving an addition or subtraction problem of her choice.
Half of the e-book will contain the steps for solving a problem using an invented strategy. The other half with
explain the steps of solving a problem by using the standard algorithm. This will be used as an example when
students are creating their own e-book using these strategies.
Students will pick an addition and subtraction problem of their choice and use PowerPoint (as an e-book)
to explain how they solved the problem using their own invented strategy. This will repeat when they begin
to work on the other problem using the standard algorithm.
Reflective Practice:
To extend this activity, the teacher should post what the students created on a blog for parents and other
members of the school to see. Students will be able to review other invented strategies from their
classmates. Students will also be able to create e-books in other subject areas for different content.
