7 FOOLISH REASONS TO LEAVE A CHURCH

“The church exists as the vehicle to make the gospel known to the world. The church
does not exist to meet your needs.”

Church hopping. It’s like Jesus hopscotch, with a Buick or Cadillac instead of Nikes or
Reeboks. And everyone seems to be playing. Christians jump around from church to
church, hopping from one trend to another.

And there are certainly valid reasons to leave a church. But there are many more terrible
reasons. As a minister, I see this firsthand—especially in the South. Churches are a dime
a dozen here. And you can have almost any worship flavor your heart desires.

So, while I acknowledge the inevitability of church hopping in this culture, I want to push
back against this trend. Church hopping is not something God wants or desires for his
people. It’s the product of an abundance of churches in America mixed with a lack of
desire and commitment among God’s people.

Without further adieu, here are seven really foolish reasons to leave a church.

1. “The church is too big.”

Blogger Aaron Loy talks about this idea here. But I have been in conversations with
people who cited this as a reason they left a church. Lying below the surface is usually
some lack of authenticity or transparency within the particular church. Or the excuse that
no one goes below the surface. While these can exist in large churches, I believe they
are both false stigmas.

And here is why I really struggle with this excuse. Is growth not something to be
celebrated in churches? Something is wrong if we do not believe numerical growth is an
important metric. The reason Christians exist is to make disciples. Inherent in our
mission is numerical growth.

On some level, if churches aren’t growing, the Great Commission is not being
emphasized. I praise God for how he uses men and women to draw many people to
himself.

So don’t be judgmental or cynical toward megachurches just because they have reached
more people with the gospel. Find a way to go deeper. Find a way to plug in. Those
opportunities are present. Find them.

2. “The church spends too much money.”

Unfortunately, many Christians have come to believe excellence and extravagance are
synonymous. Also unfortunate is the belief that churches that spend money are too
focused on materialism and worldliness.

Excellence is something every church should pursue. Passionately. And while excellence
does require money, excellence is not extravagance. And many churches that spend
money on being excellent also spend large amounts of money giving back to the
kingdom. A church with a nice campus is not necessarily a church that stewards God’s
money poorly. Be careful about drawing these conclusions.
The church should be the most creative, excellent well-run institution on the face of the
earth. And if your leaders strive for excellence, do not view their pursuit of excellence as
standing in the way of the gospel. Praise God for leaders who want to be excellent.

Take a look at the world around you. The intricateness of the human body. The splendor
of the night sky. The beauty of the mountains. The vastness of the ocean. The God we
serve is the very definition of excellence!

Don’t leave a church because leaders place an emphasis on doing everything really well.
They are following God’s lead.

3. “I am offended.”
The church is full of broken people. And many Christians wake up looking to be
offended. It is their default posture. It is crippling to spiritual growth. It is also crippling to
the health of the church.

Do me a favor. Search through the Bible. Find me a command to leave a church when
another brother or sister offends you. Start with 1 Corinthians. Tons of conflict there. Now
stop looking … the command is not in there.

So, when you do get offended, you have two options:

1. You can leave the church, which does nothing to promote spiritual growth and
Christlikeness.
2. You can work through the conflict, making you a stronger Christian and likely
drawing you and the individual closer, as well.

You make the choice. But leaving a church because one sinner said something mean to
another sinner is a bad reflection of the gospel.

If Jesus left us every time we offended him or mocked his name, he wouldn’t have any
followers left. So, walk in step with the gospel by pushing through conflict and not
running from it.

4. “This church doesn’t meet all my needs.”

One of the sad realities of the church today is the “buffet style” mentality of many
Christians. There are so many churches, people are going through each church and
handpicking the parts they like. If they find something that doesn’t meet their needs, they
are gone. Or they just hop between 20 churches.

The church is not your personal genie. You do not get to rub the sides of the church
walls and ask the church to give you what you want. “I want a good sermon, but not too
long. Lots of lights. Some smoke. And I want an inviting place for my children. You give
me all of those … I am in. Otherwise, on to the next church. Take it or leave it.”

The church exists for the name of Jesus to be glorified. The church exists for the
edification of the people of God. The church exists as the vehicle to make the gospel
known to the world. The church does not exist to meet your needs. Start getting plugged
in. And don’t use the church as your personal genie.
5. “It’s time for a change.”
“I’ve been at the same church 20 years. It’s just time for a change.”

Think about your statement. Is this statement a product the flesh or a product of the
Spirit? Hint: Answer B is probably not right.

I understand being at the same church for decades has the potential to become
monotonous. But this is not a reason to leave. Do not allow the sinfulness of your flesh to
override the holiness of the Spirit.

If you believe you must change churches every two decades, you will struggle with
marriage. And heaven? The eternity of heaven will be awful.

6. “I do not need the church anymore.”

Alright, here’s the deal: If this is you, you’ve been deceived. Yes, the church has many
imperfections. Yes, the church could always do more. But being frustrated with the lack
of vision or the lack of perfection is not grounds to leave the church.

You do need the church. Despite the cultural lie, you can’t persevere through this life on
your own. Satan is a roaring lion waiting to devour you (1 Peter 5:8).

Want to know how lions attack? They single out their prey. When animals stay with the
group, the chances they are picked apart diminish significantly. The same is true with the
church. The more that community is present in your life, the harder it will be for Satan to
destroy your life.

Don’t let Satan lie to you. Don’t let the world deceive you. You need the church.

7. “That other church down the road is really growing.”

There is a tendency in our culture to chase the “next big thing.” But here’s the problem.
The “next big thing” comes and goes. One week, this church is the “cool” place to be.
The next week, another church steals the “cool” label. If you run from church to church
seeking the next big thing, you will never plant roots deep enough to have an impact on
your community. You will also never be known well enough to expose the sin in your own
heart.

Don’t run from church to church because it’s the cool thing to do. Find a community of
people where you believe God has called you to plant and grow.

7 RAZONES DESAGRADABLES DE DEJAR UNA IGLESIA

Como ministro, veo esto de primera mano, especialmente en el Sur. Las iglesias son una moneda de
diez centavos aquí. Y puedes tener casi cualquier sabor de adoración que tu corazón desee.

Por lo tanto, aunque reconozco la inevitabilidad del salto de iglesia en esta cultura, quiero rechazar
esta tendencia. El salto de la iglesia no es algo que Dios quiere o desea para su pueblo. Es el producto
de una abundancia de iglesias en América mezclada con una falta de deseo y compromiso entre el

1. "La iglesia es demasiado grande".

citaron esto como una razón por la que dejaron una iglesia. Por debajo de la superficie suele haber
cierta falta de autenticidad o transparencia dentro de la iglesia particular. O la excusa de que nadie

Y aquí es por qué realmente luchar con esta excusa. ¿No es el crecimiento algo que se celebra en las

razón por la cual los cristianos existen es hacer discípulos. Inherente a nuestra misión es el
crecimiento numérico.

evangelio. Encontrar una manera de ir más profundo. Encuentre una manera de conectarse. Esas
oportunidades están presentes. Encuéntralos.

2. "La iglesia gasta mucho dinero".

Lamentablemente, muchos cristianos han llegado a creer que la excelencia y la extravagancia son
sinónimos. También es lamentable que las iglesias que gastan dinero están demasiado centradas en
el materialismo y la mundanalidad.

La excelencia es algo que cada iglesia debe perseguir. Apasionadamente. Y aunque la excelencia
requiere dinero, la excelencia no es extravagancia. Y muchas iglesias que gastan dinero en ser
excelentes también gastan grandes cantidades de dinero dando de vuelta al reino. Una iglesia con un
campus agradable no es necesariamente una iglesia que gobierne mal el dinero de Dios. Tenga
cuidado al sacar estas conclusiones.

La iglesia debe ser la más creativa, excelente institución bien administrada en la faz de la tierra. Y si
sus líderes buscan la excelencia, no vean su búsqueda de la excelencia como estando en el camino
del evangelio. Alabado sea Dios por los líderes que quieren ser excelentes.
Echa un vistazo al mundo que te rodea. La intrincabilidad del cuerpo humano. El esplendor del cielo
nocturno. La belleza de las montañas. La inmensidad del océano. ¡El Dios que servimos es la misma
definición de excelencia!

No deje una iglesia porque los líderes ponen énfasis en hacer todo realmente bien. Están siguiendo la
dirección de Dios.

3. "Estoy ofendido."

La iglesia está llena de gente rota. Y muchos cristianos despiertan buscando ser ofendidos. Es su
postura predeterminada. Es invalidante para el crecimiento espiritual. También es perjudicial para la
salud de la iglesia.

Hazme un favor. Busque en la Biblia. Encuentrame una orden de salir de una iglesia cuando otro
hermano o hermana le ofenda. Comienza con 1 Corintios. Toneladas de conflicto allí. Ahora deja de
mirar ... el comando no está ahí.

Por lo tanto, cuando te ofendes, tienes dos opciones:

1. Usted puede dejar la iglesia, que no hace nada para promover el crecimiento espiritual y la
semejanza de Cristo.

2. Usted puede trabajar a través del conflicto, haciéndole un cristiano más fuerte y dibujándolo
probablemente y el individuo más cercano, también.

Haces la elección. Pero dejar una iglesia porque un pecador dijo que algo malo para otro pecador es
un mal reflejo del evangelio.

correr de él.

4. "Esta iglesia no satisface todas mis necesidades."

cristianos. Hay tantas iglesias, la gente está pasando por cada iglesia y escogiendo a mano las partes
que les gustan. Si encuentran algo que no satisface sus necesidades, se han ido. O simplemente saltar
entre 20 iglesias.

La iglesia no es tu genio personal. No tienes que frotar los lados de las paredes de la iglesia y pedirle
a la iglesia que te dé lo que quieres. Quiero un buen sermón, pero no demasiado. Muchas luces.
Algunos fuman. Y quiero un lugar acogedor para mis hijos. Tú me das todas esas ... Estoy dentro. De
lo contrario, a la siguiente iglesia. Tómelo o déjelo."

La iglesia existe para que el nombre de Jesús sea glorificado. La iglesia existe para la edificación del
pueblo de Dios. La iglesia existe como el vehículo para hacer que el evangelio sea conocido por el
mundo. La iglesia no existe para satisfacer sus necesidades. Empieza a conectarte. Y no utilices la
iglesia como tu genio personal.

5. "Es hora de un cambio."

"He estado en la misma iglesia 20 años. Es hora de un cambio.

Piense en su declaración. ¿Es esta declaración un producto la carne o un producto del Espíritu?
Sugerencia: La respuesta B probablemente no es correcta.

Entiendo que estar en la misma iglesia durante décadas tiene el potencial de volverse monótono.
Pero esto no es una razón para salir. No permita que la pecaminosidad de su carne anule la santidad
del Espíritu.

Si usted cree que debe cambiar las iglesias cada dos décadas, tendrá problemas con el matrimonio.
¿Y el cielo? La eternidad del cielo será horrible.

6. "Ya no necesito la iglesia."

Bien, aquí está el trato: Si esto es usted, usted ha sido engañado. Sí, la iglesia tiene muchas
imperfecciones. Sí, la iglesia siempre podría hacer más. Pero estar frustrado con la falta de visión o la
falta de perfección no es motivo para dejar la iglesia.

Usted necesita la iglesia. A pesar de la mentira cultural, no puedes perseverar a través de esta vida
por tu cuenta. Satanás es un león rugiente esperando para devorarte (1 Pedro 5: 8).

¿Quieres saber cómo atacan los leones? Destacan a sus presas. Cuando los animales permanecen con
el grupo, las posibilidades de que se separen disminuyen significativamente. Lo mismo ocurre con la
iglesia. Cuanto más la comunidad esté presente en su vida, más difícil será para Satanás destruir su
vida.

No dejes que Satanás te mienta. No dejes que el mundo te engañe. Necesitas la iglesia.

7. "Esa otra iglesia en el camino está creciendo realmente."

Hay una tendencia en nuestra cultura a perseguir la "próxima gran cosa". Pero aquí está el problema.
La "gran cosa siguiente" viene y va. Una semana, esta iglesia es el lugar "cool". La próxima semana,
otra iglesia roba la etiqueta "cool". Si usted corre de iglesia en iglesia buscando la próxima gran cosa,
nunca plantará raíces lo suficientemente profundas como para tener un impacto en su comunidad.
Tampoco se sabrá lo suficientemente bien como para exponer el pecado en su propio corazón.

No corras de iglesia a iglesia porque es lo que debes hacer. Encuentre una comunidad de personas
donde cree que Dios le ha llamado para plantar y crecer.
