RANDOLPH PUBLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Elementary Instrumental Music

September 17, 2010

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your student has expressed a desire to play a band instrument and participate in the Randolph Public
Schools’ lesson program. Class instruction on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and
percussion will be available during the regular school day. In this program, lessons are free. We
are excited to announce that after an eight year absence we are once again able to offer instrument
lessons to students in Grade 4. Students in Grade 5 who did not enroll in the program last year may
choose to begin an instrument this year, and those in Grade 5 who played last year may choose to
continue their lessons this year. As part of the restoration of the elementary program to its previous
structure, only Grade 6 students who played an instrument last year will be scheduled for lessons this
year.

Every student must have an instrument to participate in this program. There are four options:
1. The student already has an instrument available to use.
2. The family would like to purchase an instrument through a ”rent-to-own” plan (rental fees go
toward purchase of the instrument - see attached Music Store List).
3. The family would like to rent an instrument for the school year for a
one-time rental fee (see special note on Music Store List).
4. Borrow an instrument from Randolph Public Schools if the instrument the student would like
to play is available. There is no charge to borrow the instrument; however the family is responsible
for the cost of maintenance and repair. Selection is by lottery at Instrument Night.

For those students who have already played for one year and have acquired basic skills on their
instrument, it is recommended, if possible, that families consider upgrading to a better quality student
instrument through a ‘rent-to-own’ plan (see Music Store List). Most of the instruments owned by the
Randolph Public Schools that are used for the elementary program are entry-level quality and are meant
for very beginning level students. For those families for whom this would be within their means, it would
not only improve their students’ performance at this point in their development, but it would also make the
instrument lesson opportunity available to more beginners.

Families are responsible for providing the following:

• Standard of Excellence Book One (the red book) for the instrument the student chooses
• a music stand for home practice
• accessories for playing and maintaining the instrument the student chooses.

There will be an INSTRUMENT NIGHT at the Martin E. Young School, 30 Lou Courtney Drive
on Wednesday, September 29th at 7:00 P.M. Information about the lesson program, “rent-to-own” plan,
school year rentals, and instrument loan contracts will be presented. Standard of Excellence Book 1,
music stands, and instrument accessories will also be available for purchase.

If you are interested in having your student participate in our free group lesson program, please fill out the
attached form and return to his/her classroom teacher by Friday, September 24th . Indicate your
student’s preference of instrument, and whether your student already has an instrument, has one that
requires evaluation, will be renting, or may need to borrow. Group lessons will begin in mid-October.

If you have questions, please contact me before September 24th at 781-961-6220, Ext. 526 or
