Technology Standard Addressed: 5. Computational Thinker b. collect data or identify relevant data sets, use
digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-
making
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
My students will do a project on butterflies and their growth. They will be shown a short video on how their
life cycles work. They will also be shown a short video on how to use the website for Journey North to
research for their topic. Students will begin by researching migration maps for butterflies and then re create
their own maps in groups using chart paper and markers. They will collaborate with their peers in the first
lesson.
In the second lesson they will collaborate and compare maps with another second-grade class. I will take this
further by making the two grades hold their chart papers up and collaborating with peers outside the
classroom.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students will need iPad or computers. 1 for 3 students. They will be given sub topics to chose from and
distribute equal responsibilities amongst them.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be in groups of 3 to start their charts, they will then collaborate with another
second-grade classroom to take it further. To enhance it more and to take it to a higher LoTi level,
students will then have their work on the website to collaborate with mentors outside the classroom.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will create their own migration/life cycle maps
but as they collaborate with their peers outside the classroom they will create another precise map by
themselves.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students are creating their own work without any assistance from teachers.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students will
get to publish their class work as a combined effort by two classes which will be viewed and shared
with students all around the world.
