Interest in Light-Emitting Diode (LED) has increased due to the proliferation of the LED market and naturally spread to the LED
medical device market. Recently, LED products for skin beauty have appeared on the market. Previously developed LED skin
beauty devices, and their strengths and weaknesses are analyzed by type classification. Based on the analysis results, there are
three improvement points and the design concept is derived to solve this problem. The solution is created with patch type
products that have been used in other fields. A new concept of patch type LED skin beauty device design is proposed by
combining this solution with LED skin beauty device.

1. Introduction
Recently, interest in LED has been continuously increasing due to the spread of LED market. According
to Design of Experiments (DOE) statistics, the global LED industry market has grown more than one
hundred percent on average after 2000s and is expected to reach $36 billion by 2018. As the LED
lighting market grows, various researches on light have been progressing and spreading to Information
Technology (IT), health, education, media and so on. The technical development for treating geriatric
diseases, caused by aging of the world’s population, and stress and depression of modern people have
been actively developed by using a specific wavelength range of light. Among those fields, the market
for medical devices using LEDs is increasing every year, and many researches and clinical trials are
currently underway.

Figure 1. LED Lighting Market

Most of the medical devices using LEDs are large professional equipment which is mainly used in
hospitals. Therefore, it is a product family that could only be available when visiting the hospital.
Recently, small and low-price products have been continuously developed in the large and expensive
LED medical device market. Among them, a variety of LED skin beauty devices using a specific
wavelength range are appeared. Since the existing skin cosmetics market has grown mainly around
functional cosmetics, skin care shops, and cosmetic surgery, consumers have to spend a lot of money or
spend a lot of time, which is very limited target of consumption. However, as the society develops and
the consumption level grows, owing to the increase in ownership for skin beauty, it is required to develop
various products that satisfy many consumers.1 LED skin beauty device is a small product developed for
the convenience of the busy modern people who cannot get frequent dermatology care, so that it is easy
to use at home and helps to maintain continuous skin care. Those small LED skin beauty devices can be
used in one hand or on the face in the form of a mask, but currently developed products on the market are
function-oriented, and most of them do not consider the convenience of users or consider the aesthetics.
This research proposes a design concept of LED skin beauty device which can be easily used in the
home while considering aesthetics and looking in perspective of design.
2. Theoretical Consideration of LED Medical Devices

2.1. LED Medical Devices

LEDs have been developed with many possibilities from long before. At first, it was just simple lighting,
but now the market is expanding to medical devices. Many researches and clinical trials have been
conducted on the medical effects of LEDs, and they are gradually becoming subdivided and becoming
diverse. The medical effects of LEDs vary depending on the wavelength range of the LED, and different
medical devices can be applied depend on the respective wavelength range.

There are different diseases that can be treated according to each wavelength range, and the therapeutic
effect depends on the wavelength range of the LED, so continuous research is needed. The therapeutic
effect can be maximized depending on the combination of various LED wavelength ranges even if
LEDs of same wavelength range are used. In order to verify this, it is necessary to study LED
wavelength range suitable for each disease through various clinical trials. Recently, a variety of clinical

trials have been conducted to find the wavelength ranges that are likely to cure disease in each
wavelength range. Also, the effects on joint treatment, skin reproduction, depression improvement and
acne treatment have been confirmed, and a variety of products using these findings are being developed.
Experiments to expose certain wavelength LEDs to hairless rats have shown that LEDs inhibit the
production of active oxygen, skin aging and improving wrinkles.3 Among the medical devices using
LED of a specific wavelength range, the LED skin beauty device market is being actively developed.

3. Analysis for LED Skin Beauty Device

3.1. LED Skin Beauty Device Status
The range of skin beauty devices using LEDs is varied, ranging from small devices used by individuals
at home to large equipment used in dermatology care. Recently, the interest in LED skin beauty devices
that individuals use at home has increased among them. This is because modern people are not easy to
visit dermatology due to busy life patterns, and there is an increasing demand to use LED skin beauty
devices for continuous skin care at home during their free time. Skin care requires continuous care and
treatment, but there is a real hassle to visit dermatology every time. LED skin beauty device for home use
have been developed as a solution to this. It is easy to use at home, and a single product is sufficient for
all family members. Therefore, there is an advantage that medical expenses due to dermatology care can
be reduced and it can be used at home at any time without time constraints.

3.2. Types of LED Skin Beauty Device
The LED skin beauty device sold on the market can be classified into three types: mask type which can
cover the whole face, handy type which is used in one hand, and stand type which is used in one place.
The mask type is a face shape product that can irradiate the entire face with LEDs. Since the mask type is
used to the skin in close distance and it uses a large amount of LED, it is used in dermatology care
because of its high light efficiency. However, the mask type product is large in size and somewhat heavy,
so it is inconvenient to use and is stifling if it covers the entire face.

Second, the handy type product is used on desired area by the user in close contact. It is also a product
with high light efficiency because it is used close to skin. However, there is a difficulty in checking the
desired area directly with the mirror, and it may give fatigue to the arm because it must be held in one
hand while using this. Since the irradiation range is very limited, it is possible to concentrate irradiation
on one area, but not on large area.

Third, the stand type product is put in a specific place and used whenever necessary. It is possible to

Mouse. The Journal of Cosmetological Science 6(4), 347~356

irradiate a large area, and it is not stifling because it does not cover the face. However, the light efficiency
may be lower than the other two product types since it must be a certain distance away from the face.
There are also variables due to the external environment. While using the product, it is impossible to do
other things because it wears eye patch.

Type Image Feature

․ Appearance of product is in form of mask
․ Simultaneously irradiate on a large area
Mask Type ․ Lack of aesthetics, and activity is limited because the user is tied to the
product during use
․ Eyes are not protected from light

· Handy type product to be used with one hand and intensive irradiation is
Handy possible on a desired area in close contact
Type ․ Feel discomfort because the user has to hold the device for the duration of

․ Lack of aesthetics because of mechanical shape, and poor usability
Stand Type ․ Need to wear eye patchwhile using this, and usability is greatly reduced
because the user is tied to the product during use

All three types of products reduce the usability in use. Also, there are a lot of function-oriented products
without consideration of aesthetics, so it is necessary to improve aesthetics through design. Small LED
skin beauty device is convenient to use for household use. It needs to show sufficient effect because it is
used to improve the skin without going to dermatology. From now on, LED products for skin beauty
need to be developed as a product that can be easily used at home and can improve skin in high
efficiency. There is a need to develop a portable LED skin beauty device that the user is not tied to the
product during use.

4. LED Skin Beauty Device Design Development

4.1. LED Skin Beauty Device Design Concept
Through the analysis of existing LED skin beauty devices, a new concept of LED skin beauty device is
developed to complement the disadvantages. To overcome the shortcomings of existing products, the
first step is to ensure that users are not tied to the product while using the product. Second, it should be
easy to use. Finally, it is necessary to have a conceptual design that maximizes the skin beauty effect with
high light efficiency.

4.2. LED Skin Beauty Device Design Proposal
The products that can be used on the face are researched to materialize the concept. A patch type LED
skin beauty device, which can be attached directly to a desired area on the face, is proposed based on the
devices that can be attached to the body.

Figure 4. Examples of Patch Type Products

Patch type products are thin patches that can be attached to the body using silicone. It can be attached
stably without falling due to the adhesive force of silicon in the manner used mainly in adhesive massage
product. A new concept product is designed by applying these features to LED skin beauty device. Patch
type LED skin beauty devices complemented the disadvantages of the three types of conventional LED
skin beauty devices. It is protects the eyes by completely blocking the light escaping from the product.
also It is easy to use and can be used anywhere, and both hands are free.

Figure 5. Draft of Patch Type LED Skin Beauty Device Design

4. Conclusion and Limitations
By classifying and characterizing existing LED skin beauty devices, a new concept product will be
developed. First, the user must be able to do other work while using the device. Second, the user should
feel comfortable that the devices are not heavy or cumbersome during use. Third, it is intended to allow
users to manage the device easily at home through high efficacious use without going to a hospital. By
reflecting the above information, a portable patch type LED skin beauty device, which can be easily
attached to a desired are, has been proposed.

The limitations of this study are the disadvantages of patch type products. First, hygiene problems can
occur since silicone pads are attached daily to the face. Second, there may be face parts that are difficult
to attach depending on the shape of the patch. It is necessary to analyze patches of average size that are
available for most people’s faces because every person has different curvature and size of face. This
study will be used as basic data to supplement the limitations on usability and for continuous research on
the design of LED skin beauty device.
