By James Colquhoun, Filmmaker Food Matters & Hungry For Change

O n closer inspection, when perusing the US McDon - ald’s website, there are over 72 ingredients that go into this world famous

burger. Many of which I wouldn’t be happy putting in my (or my kids) mouths.

I can hardly refer to many of these ingredients as “food” as they are far from natural or from providing your body with any form of nutrition. In fact, McDonald’s even refers to them as “components of their popular menu”, making them sound like piec- es of man-made, processed products (which is exactly what they are).

We all know that fast food is un - healthy, but have you ever stopped to really inspect what the “secret” ingredients are?

Let’s lift the bun off the Big Mac and see what’s really inside…

BIG MAC BUN:

Ingredients: Enriched Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Nia - cin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, High-Fruc- tose Corn Syrup and/or Sugar, Yeast, Soybean Oil and/or Canola Oil, Contains

of: Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, DATEM, Ascorbic Acid, Azodicarbonamide, Mono and Diglycerides, Ethoxylated Mono - glycerides, Monocalcium Phosphate, Enzymes, Guar Gum, Calcium Peroxide), Sorbic Acid, Calcium Propionate and/or Sodium Propionate (Preservatives), Soy

Lecithin, Sesame Seed.

CONTAINS: WHEAT AND SOY LECITHIN.

Wow! That’s a lot of ingredients just

to make a burger bun. It definitely

doesn’t look anything like the tradi -

tional days of just 4 simple ingredi -

ents: flour, water, salt and yeast.

2% or Less: Salt, Wheat Gluten, Calcium

Sulfate, Calcium Carbonate, Ammonium Sulfate, Ammonium Chloride, Dough

Conditioners (May Contain One or More

like cheese to me. It sounds like the chemicals for a sci - ence experiment. Notice how the recognisable ingredients are always listed

first, followed by the “secret” formula.

How about some azodicarbonamide on the side? This is a delicious (note the sarcasm) bleaching agent that is a known carcinogen.

PASTEURIZED PROCESSED AMERICAN CHEESE:

Ingredients: Milk, Cream, Water, Cheese Culture, Sodium Citrate, Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Citric Acid, Sodium Phosphate, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Lactic Acid, Acetic Acid, Enzymes, Sodium Pyrophosphate, Natural Flavor (Dairy Source), Color Added, Soy Lecithin (Added for Slice Separa - tion). CONTAINS: MILK AND SOY LECITHIN

I don’t know about you, but that definitely doesn’t sound

BIG MAC SAUCE:

Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Pickle Relish (Diced Pickles, High- Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar, Vinegar, Corn Syrup, Salt, Calcium Chloride, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate [Preser- vative], Spice Extractives, Polysorbate 80), Distilled Vinegar, Water, Egg Yolks, High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Onion Powder, Mustard Seed, Salt, Spices, Propylene Glycol Alginate, Sodium Benzoate (Preservative), Mustard Bran, Sugar, Garlic Powder, Vegetable Protein (Hydrolyzed Corn, Soy and Wheat), Caramel Color, Extractives of Paprika, Soy Lecithin, Turmeric (Color), Calcium Disodium EDTA (Protect Flavor).

CONTAINS: WHEAT, EGG AND SOY.

FM Annual 2014 | 6

Well, for a start there are 33 ingre - dients in this sauce (33!!), 4 of which are sugars, including the silent killers:

High-Fructose Corn Syrup and So - dium. The real clincher in this sauce however, is propylene glycol alginate (nicely hidden in between the spices). What is propylene glycol? Well, it’s an ingredient found in anything from anti-freeze and engine coolants, to shampoo, to… well, the big mac sauce. Tasty?

may not be pure and legally doesn’t need to include the chemicals/toxins used in the processing of the meat. All smoke and mirrors! Let’s keep going ...

PICKLE SLICES:

Ingredients: Cucumbers, Water, Dis- tilled Vinegar, Salt, Calcium Chloride, Alum, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Natural Flavors (Plant Source), Polysor- bate 80, Extractives of Turmeric (Color).

100% BEEF PATTY:

Ingredients: 100% Pure USDA Inspected Beef; No Fillers, No Extenders. Prepared with Grill Seasoning (Salt, Black Pepper).

Doesn’t sound so bad? Well for one, ALL beef in the US has to be USDA inspected, otherwise it would be il - legal! The fact they market their beef as “100% pure” actually means noth - ing. It’s like claiming their pickles are made out of 100% pickle! It may or

Come on! It’s a pickle! How can a food this simple and traditionally healthy, end up being so harmful for your health? Did you know that when cucumbers are lacto-fermented, they have the ability to dissolve the stone forming uric acid that can result from eating certain meat? Well, these faux- pickles certainly don’t do that.

SHREDDED LETTUCE AND ONIONS:

Thank goodness!! It’s actually lettuce and onions!

I understand that it’s impossible for everyone to avoid fast-food restaurants, and that sometimes you have limited food choices, es - pecially on long-haul drives across the country. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know what you are putting in your body and be provided with all the facts to make informed choices.

If you want to indulge in fast food, just try to keep it as an irregular occur- rence, as all those toxins and chemi - cals can do serious harm to your body, especially if you are consuming them on a regular basis.

6 EASY WAYS TO AVOID GMOS

Awareness about the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply is at an all-time high throughout America, thanks in large part to the Proposition 37 ballot initiative in California. But many people are now asking the question, “If GMOs aren’t labeled, how can I know whether or not the foods I buy contain them?” To help you make the best effort at avoiding GMOs while shopping at the grocery store, here are six recommendations on what to look for and what to avoid.

FM Annual 2014 | 8 6 EASY WAYS TO AVOID GMOS Awareness about the presence of

By Jonathan Benson (NaturalNews)

Corn, Soy, Cottonseed, Canola

  • 1 Avoid purchasing foods that contain non-organic soy, corn, cottonseed or canola ingredients. Prac- tically every processed food found in the “middle aisle” section of the grocery store contains some form of soy, corn, cottonseed or canola, all crops of which are typically GMO if not certified organic. Everything from cookies and crackers to cereals and snack food items contain them, which means you will want to avoid them like the plague. Common ingredients to specifically watch out for include some of the more obvious ones like high-fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, and canola oil. But several others you will want to be aware of include soy lecithin, an emulsifier added to all sorts of foods, including “health” foods, as well as soy protein, textured vegetable protein, mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and food starch. Unless certified organic, all of these ingredients are likely GMO.

PLU Codes On Fruit & Veg

  • 2 If the PLU code on fruits or vegetables starts with an “8,” avoid it. When shopping for fruits and vegetables, your first choice will want to be those labeled with a five-digit PLU that begins with a “9,” which indicates that it is certified organic. Produce items containing a four-digit PLU are considered “conventional,” which means they are not technically GMO, but may still contain pesti - cides and other toxic residues. The Environmen - tal Working Group (EWG) has created a helpful shopping guide for picking out safe produce. Produce items you will want to specifically and al - ways avoid are those bearing a five-digit PLU be - ginning with the number “8,” as these are GMOs. The vast majority of non-organic papaya, as well as several varieties of non-organic zucchini and squash are also of GM origin, so you will want to specifically purchase organic varieties of these foods as well. Genetic manipulators are also now working on a GM apple that does not turn brown, so watch out for any apple that stays unnaturally white when sliced or bruised.

9

9 Sinister Sugars Unless added sugar is specifically identified as 3 “cane,” it likely comes from

Sinister Sugars

  • Unless added sugar is specifically identified as
3 “cane,” it likely comes from GM sugar beets. At least 90 percent of the sugar beet crop grown in the U.S. is of GM origin, which means if any food product contains “sugar” or some other sugar derivative like glucose or sucrose, it is more than

likely a GMO. Always look for “cane sugar,” or preferably “evaporated cane juice,” in order to avoid GM sugar. Raw agave nectar, pure stevia extract and xylitol are also safe, non-GMO sugar and sugar substitutes.

  • 4 Artificial Sweeteners If it contains artificial sweetener, it likely contains GMOs. The popular artificial sugar substitute aspartame, which goes by the trade names Equal, NutraSweet and AminoSweet, is produced using GM bacterial strains of E. coli, which means it, too, is a GMO. Anything containing aspartame is a no-no when it comes to food.

Ambiguous Additives

  • 5 Watch out for ambiguous additives like xanthan gum, citric acid, maltodextrin and other common GMO offenders. Many common food texturizing agents, flavor enhancers, thickeners, sweeteners and fortifiers are also derived from GMOs. Some of the most common offenders include ingredi - ents like xanthan gum, citric acid, maltodextrin, lactic acid, dextrose, caramel color, baking pow - der, malt syrup, modified food starch, mono and diglycerides, sorbitol, stearic acid and triglycer- ides. The Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) has created a helpful list of “invisible GM ingredients” that you can reference while shop - ping. “We are poisoning ourselves with highly-pro - cessed, nutrient-deficient foods.” - Dr Ian Bright- hope (Food Matters Film)

FM Annual 2014 | 10

Dairy Products

  • 6 Avoid any dairy products that are non-organic, or that do not contain a “No rBGH” label. Unless a dairy product is specifically labeled as being certified organic, or as not containing the artifi - cial growth hormone rBGH, which is sometimes labeled as rBST, it likely contains GMOs. Short for recombinant bovine growth hormone, rBGH is created using GMO E. coli just like aspartame and is used in conventional cattle unless otherwise labeled. This means that all non-organic yogurt, cheese, butter, milk, and ice cream that does not specifi - cally bear a “No rBGH” label of some sort is likely made with GMOs. Non-organic dairy cows are also likely fed GM feed, which means your best bet is to stick only with certified organic or non- GMO dairy products at all times. The Non-GMO Project has also developed a cer- tification program by which food manufacturers can uniformly label food products not made with GMOs. Many food products now bear the Non- GMO Project “Verified” label, which will help give you peace of mind that the food you are buying is clean, safe, and free of GMOs. You might also want to download the FREE 2012 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides, so that you can take it with you when you go shopping. It high - lights the dirty dozen fruit and vegetables that are laden with pesticides and should be avoided unless they are organic, and the clean 15 that are OK to not buy organic if you don’t have access to them, as their pesticide levels are a lot lower. WE HAD A BABY!

And here is our unusual story

For those following us online and on Facebook, you might have seen Laurentine’s pregnant belly over the past few months. Well we recently had our baby and we wanted to share our unique story with you. I think you’ll find it an interesting commentary on birth and the begin - nings of life as a human.

I call this an unusual story because it is not the typical hospital style

birth that dominates our culture.

13 WE HAD A BABY! And here is our unusual story For those following us online

By James Colquhoun, Filmmaker of Food Matters & Hungry For Change

Date: July, 2013

E ver since Laurentine and I

first met at college at 1999

(yes we’re college sweet-

hearts!) we would joke about

starting a family and having

lots of kids running around. We did however, feel deep down inside that there was some important work call - ing us before we did, which is indeed what happened.

That work was to become the FOOD

MATTERS film, which helped heal my

father from chronic fatigue syndrome, depression and anxiety and freed him from the pharmaceutical drug band - wagon. Then more recently, HUNGRY FOR CHANGE, which chronicled our experience with helping my father

keep his weight off and covers many

of the challenges that most people face when trying detoxes and fad diets. This has cemented our belief

in the innate healing capacity of the

human body and has influenced our

opinions on health, life and birth in a deep and lasting way.

The Mind and The Body Need To Be Ready For Conception

Late last year we knew it was time for us to start a family so we prepared our bodies (both of us, you can’t get away with this, guys!) most impor-

tantly focusing on detoxification and

rejuvenating our bodies, plus bal - ancing our hormones (testosterone, progesterone and oestrogen in par-

ticular). We first tried to conceive in

Amsterdam, when we were there on a 6-week trip writing the Hungry For Change book and visiting Laurentine’s European family. Even though we had our bodies in order, it didn’t happen right away.

After we returned to the US and settled into our new home in Santa

Monica, Laurentine and I felt that much more ‘nested’ and

conception happened immediately. There was obviously a part of us that needed to feel like we were home (or had a home base) before her body wished to conceive. I have

no scientific data on this but can imagine that you might

understand why this could be so.

FM Annual 2014 | 14 Monica, Laurentine and I felt that much more ‘nested’ and conception

“We had our inner biological terrain ready, but we needed to have our minds dialed in.”

FM Annual 2014 | 14 Monica, Laurentine and I felt that much more ‘nested’ and conception

During the gestation period we were eating well and sup -

porting the baby’s development as best we knew how (there is a lot of info on this which we can save for another time). In preparation for the birth, we consulted many of

the experts from the films plus other leading experts and

we developed some interesting rituals to help welcome this baby into the world. One of the more interesting ones we loved was making baby feel welcomed, expected and accepted.

You Are Welcomed, You Are Loved, You Are Accepted!

We would say this on a daily basis to baby as we knew this was important in making baby feel welcomed and loved,

to develop a strong connection to our voices (which they can connect with from the 3rd trimester onwards) and to aid in a speedy postpartum connection. This work is backed by Bruce Lipton (author of Biology Of Belief) and helps connect with the baby’s subconscious mind in early life.

As for the actual birth and labour process, Laurentine and I held the very strong belief that ...

Birth Is A Natural Process And Not A Medical Emergency

We of course, appreciate that there is no place like a hospital when the safety of mom and baby is compro - mised and you need emergency critical care. However, we believe that everything should be allowed to progress as naturally as possible for as long as possible before any intervention (if at all).

This being the case, we opted for a home birth with two midwives and a doula. We worked with the famous birth centre in Los Angeles, California, as featured in Ricki Lake’s documentaries ‘The Business of Being Born’ and ‘More Business of Being Born’. This clinic resonated with our beliefs about how birth should be and it had the pro - fessionals to back them up.

15 We did a lot of preparation and education leading up to the birth, so that

We did a lot of preparation and education leading up to the birth, so that we would understand as much about the birth process and postpartum period as we could as this was OUR birth and we knew that we were the ones playing a big part in this.

Laurentine’s Water Broke At 7am on Sunday the 7th of the 7th

I’m not one for numerology, but this is certainly interest- ing! The team was called in and they came to the house setting up a birthing pool (blow up jacuzzi) and with all their midwife medical accoutrements. Laurentine’s contractions were getting stronger and stronger and she quickly dilated to 7cm in a few hours.

Part of our team and planning was to have a hypnothera - pist as our doula at the birth.

She Was In A Hypnotic Trance For Most Of The Birth

In between contractions we would count her down into hypnosis (which we had been training for over a few months) which brought the pain down dramatically and increased the pleasure of the early stages of labor before

the transition and pushing stages.

As the labor progressed, the baby had turned and was not in an ideal position, facing head towards her left leg and slightly upwards (posterior), despite the fact he had been in a perfect backwards facing (anterior) position for months leading up to the birth. Typically this is a much more painful birth as the back of the baby’s head (hard part) is rubbing against the mother’s lower spine (ouch!) and in a traditional hospital environment would call for an episiotomy (slicing the mother’s vagina to anus to make more room) and sucking the baby out with a vacuum or a caesarian section.

Given that we wanted to do all we could naturally, we had some other options up our sleeve.

We Called A Chiropractor In Mid-Labor To Turn The Baby!

Our midwives made a call to a local chiropractor who was a specialist in prenatal care. It was Sunday at around 2pm and he made the trip out to Santa Monica from Holly - wood just for us!

He was a 6-foot something giant of a man and a wel -

FM Annual 2014 | 16

comed sight! He began deep tissue massage around the hips, back and spine and although Laurentine was mid- labor and fully dilated, she was in total ecstasy for 2 hours as he worked on her and baby.

He worked with her through contractions, helping her to surrender and allow baby to fully relax. He also adjusted

her hips (sounded like an AK-47 firing rounds on first twist!) and literally massaged baby and then he flipped!

He turned into a near perfect anterior (face backwards) position (although still a little facing left). It was an amaz- ing thing to witness and experience. After he was done, you could see the baby in her belly lined up straight like a marching soldier ready to visit us!

Baby Turned And Was Ready For Transition

Transition and pushing took a while as he came closer to this world and the team worked with her to guide her through certain positions until we found ourselves on the birthing stool (like a chair with no bottom) in the medita - tion room overlooking the ocean ready for him to come (don’t tell our landlord, apparently they didn’t even let the last owners have a cat! haha).

As he came closer, I moved from behind Laurentine to the front so that I could catch the baby as this was what we had wanted. His head came out and cleared to his neck as I cupped his head in my hands and whispered to him:

you are welcomed, loved and accepted

upon hearing my

... voice he immediately opened his eyes and it was the most

divine experience I have ever had in my entire life (now’s

the time to cry if you feel so inclined

...

)

His body then quickly emerged and I caught him in my hands and it was a BOY!

I held him briefly before passing him to Laurentine to

place on her chest and connect the parental bond and help to kick in the oxytocin (love hormone). The birth happened at 7:54pm on Sunday the 7th of the 7th and the placenta was birthed at 8pm. He was named Hugo Colquhoun shortly thereafter.

We Kept The Placenta Connected For About 3 Hours

This is because there is approximately 600ml of blood still in the placenta at birth which continues to be pumped to the baby helping to support his transition

and immunity. Most hospitals clamp immediately after birth and then cut the cord, however, we waited about 3 hours before we eventually clamped and then I got to cut the cord (it’s a unique rubber texture for those wonder- ing).

We had the clinics OBGYN visit the house todo a final

check. Dr Stewart Fischbein is a renegade OB who after

years in the medical profession is fighting women’s rights

to VBAC’s - vaginal birth after c-section and is one of the last remaining docs who delivers breached babies and twins vaginally. He is the author of the book ‘Fearless Pregnancy’ and is featured in ‘More Business of Being Born’.

Everyone eventually left the house at around 1am and we proceeded to get some sleep (2-3 hours) before I had to wake up and stick to a commitment I made to a national TV show which had been booked months in advance. I got up at 5am and headed to the burbank studios of Access Hollywood for a segment on Hungry For Change where ...

I Announced The Birth To My Parents On National Television!

After this I drove straight home where bubba was still making his transition into the world and slowly learning to suckle and feed. We called our lactation consultant (Kimberly The Amazing!) and she helped but recommend - ed some cranial-sacral therapy to help dial in the baby’s spine and nervous system and bring him more into his body.

Baby Had Cranial-Sacral Body Work Done Within The First 48 Hours!

It was amazing to see the results after his muscles, bones and nerves were gently helped into optimal po - sitioning. You could see his eyes, mouth and suckling reflexes come in fast and he really found his way after this simple and effective treatment. He went straight

on the breast and has been sucking like a champion since. There is no doubt he would have developed this over time however, this really did help to speed things up and allow his body to come into natural alignment after the birth faster.

After 3 days baby was looking strong, but as the oxytocin high (remember the love hormone I mentioned earlier)

started wearing off, we were so lucky that ...

We Decided To Encapsulate The Placenta To Supplement After Birth

Did you know that most mammals eat their placenta

after birth (minus dolphins of course as it gets lost in

the water

bummer!) and that this natural process is

... thought to help to tell the body that the baby is out

and to contract the uterus, increase milk supply and balance the mom’s hormones.

One of the midwives took the placenta after birth, dehy - drated it then blended it into a powder and encapsulated

it. On day 3 after the birth when I first started noticing the

symptoms of postpartum moodiness or depression at its infancy, the capsules arrived. Almost immediately after taking them Laurentine was on high for hours and feel -

ing like superwoman! She has been in incredible spirits ever since and very present in the connection with baby in these early days.

She has particularly enjoyed her traditional Eastern post- partum treatment of ...

Uterus Massage And Belly Binding

In Ayurvedic and Eastern traditions the belly becomes cold after birth as there has been a big transition from the heat of having a baby in there. These traditions suggest warming Ayurvedic foods, rest, massage and belly binding to help contract the uterus and bring the organs back into position as safely and quickly as possible. There is a local lady (called Princess none the less) who visited us every two days for twenty days to assist in this process, along with a healing meditation during the massage.

On top of all of this there is one other important thing we don’t do ...

We Don’t Clean Our Baby

In the first week we did not using any soaps or products

FM Annual 2014 | 18

on his body (except for a little coco - nut oil on his bum to stop his poo sticking). This is because the vernix (protective coating) and other healthy bacteria (if the mom’s ecology is in tact during pregnancy and birth - see Donna Gates’ Body Ecology Diet for more info on this) are protective of his immune system and overall health. We think this process, along with colostrum, breast milk, sunlight

exposure, and vaginal fluid from birth

inoculating the baby’s stomach all make part of his very own unique im - munization and healthy start to this world.

We when speak to family, friends and any media about our birth experience they are often a little shocked to hear about how unorthodox it all was. But hearing about the success we had (and the comparable birth this would have been in a hospital environment) they feel such options should be at least made available to all women giv -

ing birth.

Thank you all for your support over

the past years (since 2007) with the Food Matters and Hungry For Change

films and the movement we have

made together to open up options for health and healing outside of the mainstream medical paradigm. We felt your support with us during this birth and look forward to continuing to share all that we discover over the coming months and years with more

films, books and articles. We love

what we do and we love helping share these important lifesaving messages with the world.

Additionally, we wish to acknowledge that every family’s birth experience can vary dramatically. We believe that any style of birth can be a miraculous and and spiritual experience.

WHERE TO

IN 2014?

Over 8 years ago we made the best decision of our lives - to leave our well paid career and study nutrition online!

FM Annual 2014 | 20 WHERE TO STUDY NUTRITION IN 2014? Over 8 years ago we

21

  • I n 2007, Laurentine and I were at a crossroads. We had both studied at the Australian Maritime College and spent 7 years working in the maritime industry together. I was

a ship’s officer, driving container ships

and passenger ferries around the world and Laurentine was in shipping logistics based ashore. It was a tough but rewarding life and we got to see a lot of the world together, later work- ing on private yachts visiting some of the most remote places on the planet.

We really enjoyed what we did, but there was something missing ...

That something (we later discovered thanks to Tony Robbins) were 2 critical human needs that are required if you

wish to feel fulfilled and truly content

with your work and service on this

planet. Those needs are the need to GROW and CONTRIBUTE and these were the exact two needs that were

not being fulfilled in our careers at

the time.

As our passion for our maritime pro - fession was waning, our interest and passion in nutrition was on the rise. We were reading books like no tomor-

row and devouring all the information we could find. Our interest in this re - search came at the same time as my father’s illness was becoming worse and we could see that there were so many ways we could be helping. The problem was my father wouldn’t take us seriously because we didn’t wear lab coats and didn’t have spe - cial letters after our names :)

This is when we decided to study nu - trition through a college in the US that offered a comprehensive correspon - dence course. We chose the Global College Of Natural Medicine (GCNM which has now unfortunately shut

down). We figured that if we could

complete some form of professional nutritional training, we would be able

to have the confidence and know-

how (and a piece of paper to prove it!)

to help influence my father’s health

and eventually go into practice on our own. We could also then use this

knowledge as a base to finding a

way to help share this life-saving message with the world!

Have You Ever Wondered ...

Is IIN The Perfect Fit For You?

Why Pick An Independent Institute?

Now that you’ve decided to take the big step and launch into an exciting career in nutrition, you’re probably wondering what your different op - tions are for courses on offer.

There are a lot of nutrition courses

out there, and a lot of them vary in the variety of information that they

offer, and whether they follow a more conventional approach or offer a wide

spectrum of theories that focus more on holistic training.

We chose to study at an independent institute as we wanted information

that was not influenced by or based

on government policies and regula - tions. We were also not really inter- ested in the conventional study of dietetics, as this was a more clinical approach and was not focused on optimal health. This was something that we really wanted to focus on and gain a deeper understanding about, as we believe it is the heart of health and wellbeing.

What we believe is most important, is

studying at an institute that offers a

huge variety of information and gives you a broad understanding of nutri - tion, to then allow you to pave your own path for your clients’ health and wellbeing.

For us, we found that some of the more traditional colleges had limi -

tations, were extremely costly and required a lot of time. The Global Col - lege of Nutritional Medicine felt like

the right fit for us as it focused more on holistic health, was flexible and

online, so we could study at our own pace.

Reasons To Choose An Independent Institution Such As IIN:

Separate from the government

system Focused on optimal health

Relatively inexpensive

In our opinion, the Institute for Inte - grative Nutrition (IIN) ticks all the right boxes as an independent institution and would be our preference if we were to undertake our study today. We have many friends in the industry that completed their studies at IIN and are some of the leaders today in health and nutrition. You could be next!

OIL PULLING

The Habit That Can Transform Your Health

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxi- fication. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat.

FM Annual 2014 | 36 OIL PULLING The Habit That Can Transform Your Health Oil pulling

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

How To Oil Pull

T he most effective oil pulling

is done by placing around a tablespoon of cold pressed organic sesame oil in the mouth and swishing the oil

around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting it out.

Other oils such as extra virgin, cold-

pressed coconut, sunflower and olive

oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the best oils for this practice. I recommend alter-

nating oils every couple of days to get

the full benefit. Putting high-quality

organic oils into the mouth has a

multi-effect outcome.

First, the oils mix with the saliva, turn - ing it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva. As the oil is swished around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reab - sorbed.

What Does Oil Pulling Do?

Multiple scientific studies show the ef- ficacy of oil pulling therapy. One study

shows that oil pulling with sesame oil

37

FM Annual 2014 | 38

can boost overall oral health. Specifically, using sesame

oil as an oral health agent helps to reduce the amount of

S. mutans (germ) count in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull out bacteria, as well as stop bacteria from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.

Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth,

creating a soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as

vegetable fat is an emulsifier by nature. Most interesting

is perhaps the ability of oil to cleanse out harmful bacte -

ria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for oral health include:

Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and

jaws Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such

as cavities and gingivitis Prevention for bad breath

Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums

Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat

Possible holistic treatment for TMJ and general sore - ness in the jaw area

Benefits Beyond the Mouth?

May help with gastroenteritis

Aids in the reduction of eczema

May reduce symptoms of bronchitis

Helps support normal kidney function

May help reduce sinus congestion

Some people report improved vision

Helps reduce insomnia

Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption

Aids in reducing pain

Reduces the symptoms of allergies

Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Scientific Studies on Sesame Oil and Oil

Pulling

Sesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidants sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. It also holds a high concentra - tion of Vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple stud - ies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These studies support the use of oil pulling in the preven - tion of dental cavities and gingivitis.

A 2007 study looked into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and

hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pull -

ing, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in

gingivitis.

Ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many holistic practitioners tout its use for a variety of health concerns.

It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body. Harmful bacteria are removed and ben - eficial microflora are given a healthy environmentto flourish. Because of this holistic perspective, oil pull - ing has been used as a preventative health measure for many other conditions.

Another study, conducted in 2008, found a “remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility to dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also

studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus

mutans in the mouth.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health

include:

Migraine headache relief

Correcting hormone imbalances

Reducing inflammation of arthritis

JUICING Vs. BLENDING

WHICH ONE IS BETTER?

This is a question that we get asked all the time. Which is better: juic- ing or blending? Does one offer more health benefits than the other? Juices and smoothies both play an important role in any wellness program and we’ve discuss the benefits of each in both of our films, Food Matters and Hungry For Change. We believe that both juicing and blending are very beneficial, but in different ways.

FM Annual 2014 | 40 JUICING Vs. BLENDING WHICH ONE IS BETTER? This is a question

Here is a short comparison that explains the differences

between the two as well as some of the specific benefits of

each.

What’s The Difference?

Juicing

Juicing is a process which extracts water and nutrients from produce and discards the indigestible fiber.

Without all the fiber, your digestive system doesn’t have to

work as hard to break down the food and absorb the nutri - ents. In fact, it makes the nutrients more readily available to the body in much larger quantities than if you were to eat the fruits and vegetables whole.

This is especially helpful if you have a sensitive diges - tive system or illness that inhibits your body from

processing fiber. The fiber in produce helps slow down

the digestive process and provides a steady release of nutrients into the blood stream. Jason Vale calls juicing “A nutrient express!”

Freshly-squeezed vegetable juices are part of most

healing and detoxification programs because they are

41

so nutrient rich and nourish and re - store the body at a cellular level.

A word of caution: When you remove the fiber from the produce, the liquid

juice is absorbed into your blood stream quickly. If you are only juicing fruits, this would cause a rapid spike in blood sugar and unstable blood sugar levels can lead to mood swings, energy loss, memory problems and more!

Fiber is also filling and without it in

the juice, some people tend to get hungry again quickly.

Blending

Unlike juices, smoothies consist of the entire fruit or vegetable, skin

and all, and contain all of the fiber from the vegetables.

However, the blending process breaks

the fiber apart (which makes the fruit and vegetables easier to digest ) but also helps create a slow, even release of nutrients into the blood stream and avoids blood sugar spikes. Smoothies tend to be more filling, be - cause of the fiber and generally faster

to make than juice, so they can be great to drink first thing in the morn - ing as your breakfast or for snacks throughout the day.

By including the fiber in your smooth - ie, the volume will increase. Also, you can pack more servings of fruits and veggies into a single serving of juice than you can into a smoothie.

Juicing and Blending Rules

1. It’s best not to combine fruits and vegetables (unless it’s apple). This can affect how well your diges - tive enzymes function.

This doesn’t seem to matter too much in green juices and smoothies, but vegetables like carrots, beetroots,

broccoli and zucchini don’t combine well with fruit due to their high starch content. In his book Food Combin - ing Made Easy, Dr. Herbert Shelton explains that starchy foods have to be eaten alone because starches

are digested with enzymes different

from those used for any other food

group. Combining starchy foods with fruit may cause fermentation and gas. However, Dr. Shelton found that green leafy veggies combine well with pretty much everything.

2. Try to drink your juice or smooth - ie straight away. After 15 minutes, light and air will destroy much of the nutrients. If you can’t drink it straight away, transfer to a dark airtight container until you’re ready.

FM Annual 2014 | 42

FM Annual 2014 | 42 Using The Right Equipment To get the most benefit from your

Using The Right Equipment

To get the most benefit from your

juices and smoothies, it’s important to use the right equipment. Invest in a good-quality juicer. Cheaper, centrifu - gal juicers introduce heat and oxygen and destroy the enzymes and nutri - ents in your fruits and vegetables. While it may cost you a bit more ini - tially, a premium cold-press juicer will produce a superior-quality juice and allow you to extract more from your fruit and vegetables, saving expense in the long-term. The machines themselves will also generally last longer. In contrast to the rough extraction of centrifugal juicers, mastication or cold-press juic- ers compress fruit and vegetables to ‘squeeze’ out their juice.

The same goes for a blender. You want a blender that is gentle on your

produce and doesn’t heat up the en -

zymes as it’s pulling apart the fibers.

We spend money on gadgets, clothes, restaurants and other luxuries so, if

you can afford it, investing in your

health by buying a quality juicer or blender is totally worth it.

Read our Juicer Buying Guide on p. 62 and learn about the pros and cons of each type of juicer.

DAY 1 - Perfect Green Juice

Ingredients

  • 3 organic sticks celery

  • 1 lebanese cucumber (peeled if not organic)

  • 2 stems kale 1/4 fennel bulb

  • 1 lemon, peeled

  • 1 green apple (peeled if not organic) 1/2 slice of ginger, peeled

Tools You'll Need

A cold-press or centrifugal juicer.

Method

Put all ingredients through your juicer. Strain through your sieve to remove all residual pulp. Have straight away but sip slowly and enjoy.

Note:

This juice is an excellent source of easily digestible alkaline miner-

als, such as potassium, which is particularly helpful when cleans- ing.

Make sure to get your celery organic if nothing else, as conven- tional celery is renowned for being heavily laden with chemical residues.

Day 2 - Skin Beauty Salad

On the menu today is one salad that is sure to feed your body the nutrients it needs to glow and make you feel beautiful, inside and out.

Ingredients:

Method:

  • 1 Put the sliced onion in a small bowl with the lime juice to soak for at least 10 minutes. If you do this ahead of time, leaving it to soak for an hour or more creates an even softer, sweeter, pinker result.

  • 2 handfuls of young arugula (rocket)

  • 2 handfuls of baby spinach

  • 1 carrot, grated or shredded

  • 2 radishes, sliced paper thin with a mandolin

  • 2 small cucumbers, sliced in half lengthways

  • 1 small red onion, sliced super thin with a mandolin

  • 3 limes, juiced

  • 1 hass avocado

  • 1 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar

  • 1 pinch of cayenne pepper

  • 1 tsp raw honey

  • 1 handful of fresh soft herbs (works best with dill, coriander or basil leaves)

¼ tsp unrefined sea salt

Tools You’ll Need:

A mandolin or sharp knife Blender

  • 2 Scoop the seeds out of the cucumbers with a teaspoon and throw the seeds into your blender; chop the cucumbers

  • 3 In a large bowl, arrange the leaves, cucumber, carrot and rad- ish. Take the onion out of the lime juice and add this to the salad too.

  • 4 Add to the blender the left-over lime juice, avocado, vinegar, cayenne, honey, herbs and salt. Blend until smooth; you may need to add a dash of water to facilitate blending. Adjust sea- soning to taste.

  • 5 Dollop dressing generously on your salad; mix through be- fore eating.

Note:

Onions and arugula (rocket) are high in sulfur, a beautifying min- eral which cleanses the liver and skin. Additionally, radishes and cucumbers are high in silica, which is necessary for the strength- ening and moisturizing of hair, skin and nails.

47

Day 3 - Dry Skin Body Brushing

Day 4 - Body Scrub

Ok, today might get a little dirty, but it’s definitely worth it! Prep

yourself with some tunes to sing in the shower and get ready to give yourself a seriously good body scrub.

Salt scrub ingredients

Why scrub with salt?

Sea salts and epsom salts have been used for centuries to pro- mote health and wellness, treat skin disorders, detoxify the body and prevent illness. Using salt as a body scrub can feed and nour- ish the skin and body through its balanced minerals.

½ cup of ground Himalayan salt or unrefined sea salt

½ cup of organic coconut oil or grapeseed oil Juice of 1 lemon

The magnesium in the epsom salts can reduce inflammation, while the sulfates flush out toxins. Sea salt is chock full of minerals that are beneficial to the skin. Using salt in a homemade scrub can

breathe new life into tired skin.

Mix up all the ingredients in a bowl and go get dirty in the shower!

It’s best to wet your skin a little and then turn off the shower and

scrub away just using your hands and creating a circular motion. When your skin is slightly pink and stimulated, turn on the shower

and wash it all off. Make sure to wash off all the scrub if it gets on

the shower walls.

By gently exfoliating the skin with a salt scrub in circular motions removes dead skin cells. These layers of dead skin cells can make

the skin look dry and flaky; exfoliation with a salt scrub reveals the

moist, shiny skin hidden underneath. This abrasive action associ- ated with scrubbing also invigorates the skin and helps to improve circulation. Improved circulation will give the skin a natural glow!

As salt also has antiseptic qualities, a salt scrub will help remove bacteria from the skin and unclog pores. Removing bacteria will aid in reducing inflammation along with any itching and pain as- sociated with a bacterial-related skin disorder.

49

Day 5 - Dreamy Detoxifying Bath

Today is all about relaxation and allowing your mind and body to completely forget about day to day worries. A healthy mind is a healthy body. So, what better way to relax than with a hot, detoxi- fying bath? Light some candles, put on some relaxing music and ENJOY!

The baking soda will help to neutralize acids in toxins stored in

your body. The epsom salts will help to draw fluid and toxins out

of the skin. The lavender oil works as a great antiseptic and relax-

ant. The chamomile oil is great for anti-inflammatory properties

and also calming effects. The lemongrass oil will help to revitalize

your skin and invigorate your body.

Run a hot/warm bath and add:

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 cup epsom salts

  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

  • 5 drops chamomile essential oil

  • 5 drops lemongrass essential oil

*If you don’t have all of the essential oils above, that’s ok! Mix and match whatever you have on hand and make a bath that smells beautiful and calming for you. Even just having an epsom salts bath will do wonders for your body.

Day 6 - Yogurt and Honey Facial

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp organic, whole yoghurt

  • 1 tsp raw organic honey

Method:

Whisk together in a small bowl. Apply to clean face, leave for 5-10

minutes then rinse off with water.

Note: Yogurt contains high amounts of Lactic Acid, an AHA proven to be successful in refining pores, exfoliating the skin and stimu- lating collagen production. Unlike most other exfoliants that are harsh (e.g. salylic acid), it gently cleans the skin and is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. Honey is an all-natural humec- tant; it retains water to help keep the skin soft and moisturised. It also functions as an antimicrobial agent and can even be used to treat minor burns and cuts.

2014 SKIN CARE BUYING GUIDE

Join us as we peel back the outer layer to uncover the best natural skin care products to buy this year! Discover the problems with the beauty industry, how to understand labels, our top tips for safe skin care and the products we use.

FM Annual 2014 | 54 2014 SKIN CARE BUYING GUIDE Join us as we peel back

Y our skin is your largest or- gan and deserves extra TLC!

One of the things we’ve learnt along the way in our

years of being in the natural health profession is that, what you put in your body matters, but so does what you put on your body.

The skin is your largest organ and absorbs 60% of what you put on it. Think about this for a second… Ac- cording to the Environmental Working Group, the average woman uses 12 “beauty” products per day, containing about 168 ingredients. That’s a lot of ingredients you’re putting into your body, and if we’re not careful many of

those could be toxic!

The beauty industry promotes all types of lotions and potions that promise to make you look 10 years younger, hide imperfections, soften your skin, but at what cost?

Join us as we uncover the dark side of the beauty industry, why 100% natural skin care is incredibly important, help you decipher how to read the labels of your skin care products, provide you with tips for safe skin care and share our all time favorite skin care ranges with you!

Let’s start by looking at the beauty

industry, and what they’re not telling us ...

The Ugly Side of Beauty

You walk into the beauty section of a department store and are bom - barded with sales assistants trying to tackle you into their chair to try on all types of miracle beauty products. You’re surrounded by advertisements everywhere telling you that they’ve just uncovered a “new” formula that miraculously turns you into Benjamin Button. Your skin will be as smooth as a baby! But what’s really happening in the industry that loves to conceal and gloss over things?

55

Common Myths ...

  • 1 It’s sold in stores, it must be safe? Wrong. The US Food and Drug Administration does not have mandatory safety standards in place for cosmetics. That’s scary stuff. This means any cos - metic product can make it onto the shelves and could be loaded with toxic formulas and endanger your health.

  • 2 They’ve just released a new anti-aging formula. Yippeee! Hold on. Before you start dousing yourself in the latest skin care that promises to wipe 10 years off your face and remove all those unwanted skin spots, take a look at the label. Can you even decipher what’s in it? Many of those ingredients could contribute to long-term health effects such as eczema, cancer, infertility and more.

  • 3 The label looks safe, so it must be ok? You’re armed with a list of all the ingredients to look out for on the label. It doesn’t say it contains form - aldehyde or parabens, so they must not be in there. Unfortunately, a lot of chemical cocktails hide under the term “fragrance” which allows the company to not actually list what is in it. There are all sorts of loopholes in the beauty industry.

  • 4 “Pink” products help cure breast-cancer Sadly, no. Most large beauty companies such as Estee Lauder, Avon and Revlon use toxins and carcinogens in their products. So even though they are promoting that they donate profits to find a cure, they could be in fact contributing to this deadly disease.

The Skinny On Product Labels

shampoos, body washes, and bubble baths, as well as skin creams and some brands of toothpaste.

with them, not that we recommend that!), they also make us glow and feel naturally beautiful.

One of the most important things to do when selecting your skin care is to read the label of ingredients! Forget the terms on the front “organic”, “natural” or “fragrance-free” and jump straight to the small print.

FM Annual 2014 | 56 The Skinny On Product Labels shampoos, body washes, and bubble baths,

Here are a few things to stay clear of:

Thimerosol

Is a mercury-containing preservative. Mercury may cause allergic reactions,

skin irritation and adverse effects

on the nervous system. Studies have also shown that it can affect repro - duction. Thimerosol is used as a preservative for products applied in the area of the eye, such as eye drops and contact lens solutions.

DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea and Imidazolidinyl Urea

Used as preservatives and can re -

lease formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a sensitizer and a proven carcinogen. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep.

Benzyl Alcohol and Isopropyl Alcohol

Both can irritate the skin. They are

used as fragrance ingredients as well as preservatives, solvents and anti-foaming agents for lotions, sunscreens, hand sanitizers and baby wipes. There is also evidence that these two alcohols are neurotoxic.

1,4-Dioxane

Classified by the US Environmental

Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen. It is a contaminant in shampoos, body wash, children’s bath products and other sudsing cosmet- ics. 1,4-dioxane is a contaminant and not an ingredient, therefore it does not appear on ingredient labels.

Parabens

This is a preservative that is able to

mimic estrogen hormones and has been found in breast tumors.

“Fragrance”

An ambiguous term where many toxic chemicals are hidden under, includ - ing synthetic fragrances containing phthalates - a plasticizing material used in polyvinyl chloride PVC which can mess with your endocrine sys - tem.

So, how do you keep your skin care toxin and chemical-free?

It’s simple

...

go “au naturel!”

If you’re wondering what natural skin care products are out on the market and are thinking of making the leap to the natural skin care world, then you’ve come to the right place!

Beauty Is Created From The INSIDE & OUT.

Beauty is created in two ways: the foods that you eat and what you put on your skin. It’s not only important to know what ingredients you are putting on your skin, you also need to know what ingredients you are eating and feed your body with foods that promote beauty and vitality. If you want a healthy glow, then start by eat- ing foods rich in nutrients and miner- als that nourish your cells and make your insides sing and dance with joy!

How Can I Find The Right Skin Care For Me?

Here’s what WE look for when choosing a skin care range:

Read labels: Start looking at the back of your products. The more ingredients you can pronounce, the better. If you see a lot of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petroleum products, fragrances, and the like, look for another, safer product. Remember, not all ingredients are on the label, so make sure you trust the company you are purchasing from.

Shop at natural stores or online specialty stores: Most of your healthier and safer products are either in whole foods stores or online.

Research the company: Many newer companies were started because of the lack of natural and nourishing products out there. These companies tend to care more about what they put into their products. Research the

companies you’re buying from, and find those that you

can trust.

Rate your products: Check out the Environmental Work- ing Group’s Skin Deep Database and type in your product. You’ll discover the rating for the hazard level of that prod - uct. This will give you a good starting point as to which of your current products may not be completely safe.

Educate yourself: The more you read about cosmetics in - gredients, the more you’ll be able to make smart choices. We provide you with the starting base for a sound under- standing of the beauty industry and the importance of using natural and organic products.

If you follow these simple tips below, you should be able

to find an awesome natural skin care range that your

body loves and is free of all the hidden nasties.

JUICER

BUYING

GUIDE!

Get the lowdown on the best juicer to buy this year! Cold Press, Centrifugal, Nutrient Quality, Easy To

Clean, Low Noise & more ...

FM Annual 2014 | 62 2014 JUICER BUYING GUIDE! Get the lowdown on the best juicer

S ince launching Food Mat- ters and Hungry For Change we continue to get many questions on juicers such as “What juicer should I

buy?”, “Are some juicers better than others?” and “What juicer do you recommend?”.

We normally answer with “The best juicer is the one you have or the one you’re using” because if you are already juicing, you’ve already begun

making a difference to your health.”

There are however, many different

types and models of juicers available and it can become quite confusing and overwhelming when you’re in

the process of deciding which one to invest in.

Why Juice?

If you’re looking to upgrade your current juicer or you’re new to juic - ing, then you’re in the right place!

Having experimented with many dif- ferent types of juicers ourselves over the past 10 years, we can now give you some answers and guidance to help make your decision easier. After all, purchasing the right juicer is a big decision and one of the most impor- tant investments you’ll ever make for your health.

But first, let’s get to the reasons why

it’s important to juice ...

We believe there are three main reasons why you should consider incorporating fresh juice, especially vegetable juice, into your lifestyle.

  • 1 Fresh juice is the 15-minute nutrient express to health. Many of us have impaired diges - tion, which reduces our body’s ability to absorb nutrients from vegetables. Fresh juices go directly into your bloodstream and are therefore considered a 15-minute nutrient express to health. Unfortunately store- bought juices contain virtually no

63 nutrients due to the pasteuriza - tion process. 2 Juicing lets you add a wide

nutrients due to the pasteuriza - tion process.

  • 2 Juicing lets you add a wide variety of fruit and vegetables to your diet. Many of us eat the same veg- etables and fruits every day or worse, don’t even eat any on a regular basis! With juicing, you can enjoy a wide variety of vege - tables that you don’t enjoy eating whole. Juicing is also the perfect way to consume the recommend - ed daily serving of vegetables.

  • 3 Fresh juice offers incredible health benefits. After regularly consuming

freshly-pressed vegetable juices, which are highly alkalizing, you will experience improved energy levels, digestion and mental clar- ity, clearer skin, and an overall sense of wellbeing.

Types of Juicers

So,

you know about the amaz -

ing health benefits of juicing and

you’re ready to get started. Now you’re wondering what type of juicer is best for you.

There are many types of juicers available, varying in both quality and price. A cheaper centrifugal juicer may be an appropriate start for beginners and certainly preferable to

not juicing at all, if other models are

unaffordable.

However, a cold press juicer (also known as a masticating or slow juicer)

will definitely produce a superior-

quality juice and allow you to extract

more from your fruit and vegetables, saving money in the long-term.

Go to next page to see a comparison.

FM Annual 2014 | 64

Centrifugal Juicers

Centrifugal juicers are commonly available in retail outlets and are the cheapest type to purchase. These machines initially extract juice by pulverizing fruit and vegetables against a round cutting blade that spins very quickly against a metal strainer. The centrifugal force generated by the spinning motion of the cutting surface separates the juice from the pulp.

FM Annual 2014 | 64 Centrifugal Juicers Centrifugal juicers are commonly available in retail outlets and

Cold Press Juicers

These machines operate via a masticating (chewing) or cold press method to produce a superior juice to their centrifugal counterparts. In contrast to the rough extrac- tion and high speeds of centrifugal juicers, cold press juicers operate at lower speeds and gently compress fruit and vegetables to ‘squeeze’ out their juice. While more costly, their slower and more thorough extraction rates produce a higher-quality juice and more of it.

What Should I Look For In A Juicer?

“But aren’t cold press juicers more expensive?”

When WE are looking for our per- fect juicer, WE look for:

Able to easily juice all greens,

herbs and grasses (with a high yield) Good to juice fruits, including

soft varieties Cold press, to produce a supe -

rior juice Low speed (rpm), to minimise

oxidation and produce a longer- lasting juice Able to make nut milks

Easy to clean

Low noise!

Yes they are! Up front, you’re typically looking at something in the $350- $700 range, which is a big investment.

But it’s where you save in the long run that might surprise you! Cold press juicers extract 35% more juice out of your fresh produce meaning real savings from the first day you use

it!

Let’s use an example. If you juice $100 a week’s worth of fresh vegetables and fruits through a cold press juicer vs. a centrifugal juicer you can extract 35% more juice, meaning $35 saved!

So, if you’re juicing for a year with a cold press juicer, you can save up to $1,820! (Meaning you’ll pay for your juicer many times over with the savings alone!)

This is because cold press juicers produce a much dryer pulp than centrifugal juicers, meaning that the highest possible amount of nutrients are extracted and there is less overall waste.

This led us to vertical cold-press masticating juicers as the most superior type of juicer!

We believe this is the most impor- tant consideration when buying a juicer.

When you’re serious about your health, consuming the highest-quality, nutrient-dense foods should be your

first priority and something not to be

compromised.

Cold press juicers operate at lower speeds (usually around 70-80 RPM), keeping heat generation to a mini -

mum. This not only produces a supe - rior-tasting juice with minimal foam and separation, but it also means that

the beneficial enzymes and nutrients

are retained. This is where all the goodness is!

Nutritional tests* (between a cold press and centrifugal juicer) revealed that cold press juicers extract up to 42% more vitamin C, up to 60% more vitamin A and yield between 35 - 50% more juice.

“How long will cold pressed

juice keep for?”

There are many variables which can

affect the shelf life (including the type

of produce juiced and storage meth -

ods) so there’s no definite answer to

this!

Our recommendation would be to drink your juice as soon as possible after juicing to enjoy maximum taste

and nutritional benefits.

But don’t worry, freshly prepared, cold pressed juices can be refriger- ated! Fruit juices can last 24-48 hours and vegetable juices 12-24 hours.

“I’m busy and need a juicer that practically cleans itself!”

Most of the newer, vertical models of cold press juicers have innovative self cleaning systems that keep the juicing screen clear and prevent pulp buildup while in use. Some even have brushes that clean the screen while you’re

juicing, so the hard part of cleaning is done for you!

In between juicing, you can run some water through the juicer to rinse it.

We would always recommend that you rinse and clean your juicer as

soon as you’ve finished using it. When

you get into a routine of cleaning your

juicer, it’s quite easy to keep clean and ready to use.

“I want to juice herbs,

grasses, exotic greens and make fresh nut milks

without a blender!”

Most of the newer, vertical models of cold press juicers are perfect if you want to juice leafy green vegetables, grasses, herbs, sprouts and soft fruits. You can also make nut milk, without having to spend money on

two different juicers or a blender as

well.

Nut milk made in a cold press juicer typically lasts much longer than when made through the nut bag/blender method.

and romaine while flawlessly juic- ing cucumbers, apples, and other “watery” fruits. The pulp varied from dry (hearty leafy greens, like kale) to semi-moist (romaine, apples, etc). The juice typically had little foam, but it would depend on what I juiced to determine that. I love the warranty, too.” - Kristen Suzanne
