Lesson Idea Name: Home Measurement

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE2.MD.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers,
yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
MGSE2.MD.2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different measurements; describe
how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen. Understand the relative size of units in
different systems of measurement. For example, an inch is longer than a centimeter. (Students are not
expected to convert between systems of measurement.)

Technology Standard Addressed:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Universal Design for Learning can be used to extend and support the learning experiences for all students. In
this lesson, students use Edublogs to access flipped classroom material. The directions for the flipped
classroom are in both audio and written form so students with hearing and visual impairments can easily
access the information.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be learning about measurement in this activity. I have used the flipped classroom model
showcased in my blog. It addresses standards MGSE2.MD.1 and MGSE2.MD.2 and is for second grade.
Students can access the blog to find instructions under the tab labeled “flipped classroom”. For this activity
students are to measure at least five different objects using either a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape and
record their results to discuss in class the next day.
Flipped classroom is where students and parents alike can go to see what needs to be done before the
next class. This allows students to gain background knowledge on the topic before learning about it. With this
activity, students will come to class to share what and how they measured. This will take approximately ten to
fifteen minutes to complete.

Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools
A website creation tool such as blogs is critical to the project because it is where parents and students can
hear or read the instructions on what is to be completed. Without technology, students would not be able to
access the information to complete the activity.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

There are no possible issues surrounds Internet safety and student privacy that could arise while completing
this learning experience. In my blog, I do not provide any information or photos regarding my students.

Reflective Practice:

After designing this lesson idea, I feel as though the activities could impact student learning greatly. Not only
do blogs allow students to access information that could be used for extra support, but it also allows me to
post instructions for a flipped classroom. The flipped classroom models allow me to ensure students are
coming to class ready to learn with the prior knowledge they gained from the activity.
