Metal Dust Magnetizer

Chapter I

Background of the Study

Dust is a small solid particles, dust may be considered as dust mites or metal dust
which can penetrate and deposit in the human respiratory tract through inhalation and
have harmful effects on physical and mental state, most of its victims are children. The
researcher came up with a solution for it, a metal dust magnetizer. The perfect cleaning
material for metal dust.

The magnetizer can also help at workplaces. It can be a small scrap magnetizer so the
workers won’t have a hard time cleaning them. It can also be a screw holder so the
workers that always bring screws with their hands because the magnetizer is a handy one
which can be put unto the workers pants.

The magnetizer can be easily created, it’s parts can be purchased at the repair shops.
It is also a bit high in price but you can use it in a long time.

Statement of the Problem

This study was primarily focused on eliminating metal dust and the following are:

1. Are the needed materials to construct the magnetizer is available on the market?

2. Is the device a portable one?

3. Can the device be an alternative screw holder?

4. Are the materials that are going to be used does have good qualities?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study are the workers and the people who work on their garages or
backyard with metal objects. Also the safety of the kids, preventing them from inhaling
the metal dust and from getting cut by the small scrap that can damage our body.

This study limits on magnetizing large metal objects and non-metallic dust.

Significance of the Study

This study contributes to workers who work with metals by helping the workers to
lighten up their work by magnetizing the small metal objects that they need so they won’t
be picking them up anymore, they will just pick it on their waist where the magnetizer is
put into. It also contributes to parents to prevent their child from inhaling metal dust. The
difference it can make is that it can lighten up a worker’s workload by simply magnetizing
small metal objects like screws, bolts, clamps, and nails.

Definition of Term

In this part is where the unfamiliar words that the researchers used is defined
technically.

Metal Dust- The small particles that comes from metal cuts.

Magnetizer - A matter that attracts metal objects.

Portable - You can bring it anywhere without any kind of hassle.

Review of Related Literature

Magnetizers are used to magnetize parts and change magnets. There are several
different types of magnetizing products. Choices include coil magnetizers, electronic
capacitance switching (ECS) magnetizers, yoke magnetizers. Coil Magnetizers pass
the parts through a magnet, or lay them on top of a magnet. ECS magnetizers allow
the user to electronically select the voltage and capacitance require for proper
magnetization ( Dexter Magnetic Technology, Inc., 2015).

Surely magnetized tools have helped you many times, the best example is
definitely a screwdriver. When you drop the screw in inaccessible location you can
easily pick it up with magnetized tip of screwdriver. Even if not magnetized, it is very
easily done just by touching the strong permanent magnet (damirvk, 2016).
Metals are valuable materials that can be recycled again and again without degrading
their properties. Scrap metal has value, which motivates people to collect it for sale to
recycling operations. In addition to a financial incentive, there is also an environmental
imperative. The recycling of metals enables us to preserve natural resources while
requiring less energy to process than the manufacture of new products using virgin raw
materials. Recycling emits less carbon dioxide and other harmful gasses. More
importantly, it saves money and allows manufacturing businesses to reduce their
production cost. Recycling also creates jobs ( Rick LeBlanc, 2016).

Scrap doesn’t just represent a cost to a metal stamper that didn’t fully maximize raw
material when processing a job. It also represents the potential for costs resulting from
injuries if the scrap is handled or stored improperly. Many work tasks, such as manual
loading and unloading, lift truck operating, and breaking and cutting, involved in the
management of scrap metal have the potential to injure workers. The most common
types of injuries that occur when handling scrap metal are sprains and strains, cuts,
lacerations, and punctures, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other potential
dangers include workers getting caught in, struck by, or crushed by the equipment used
to move the scrap; amputation from that same equipment; and respiratory illnesses from
chemicals or dust on the scrap (Shannon Decamp, 2013).

A case in point was reported recently by USA Today. At the age of 6, Shawn Trotter
was a clumsy and fidgety child. Now 13, the Vallejo, California, teenager still struggles with
school and forgets simple tasks. The parents say the child was poisoned by lead dust his
father brought home from his job repairing and building batteries -- from years of father
and son playing together while Shawn's father was still dressed in his lead-contaminated
work clothes. When the boy was tested at 6, he had blood-lead levels nearly four times
the acceptable numbers for children, according to the family's lawsuit. His parents have
been told that the brain damage he suffered is permanent ( Lou Bergeron, 2017).

Scrap metal recycling is one of the most recyclable products. Most metals only have
to be melted down and then reformed into other products, making its life cycle
potentially endless. Recycling makes a substantial saving on landfill space requirements
and it helps conserve the world’s resources. Metals should not be dumped or burnt in
fires, but should be collected and recycled or reused as storage containers. Some metals
are coated with plastic and the quick and easy option of burning to recover the metal
inside, should not be practiced ( Sprep, 2017).
Scrap metal recovery and collection can placeworkers at risk for lead poisoning. Lead
may be present in the coatings on the scrap (paints, hot dips, etc.), or it may be present as
pure metal, an alloy, or its oxides (as found in battery plates). Lead poisoning is
completely preventable. This pamphlet provides information on controlling lead
exposures in your business. Exposures to lead fumes and dust put workers at risk for lead
poisoning. Workers can take lead home on their clothing and shoes. This is dangerous to
children ages six and younger, because lead is toxic to the brain and can cause
permanent damage ( SHARP, 2002).

Methodology

Research Design

Descriptive Research is giving information about how something about how

something or someone looks and sounds, etc. using words to describe what something
or someone is like , providing facts about how a language is actually used rather than
rules that tell people how it should be used.

Research Instrument

The researchers used likert scale as evaluation tools.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents are the Grade 11 students who volunteered to participate. They
evaluated the performance of Metal Dust Magnetizer.

Sampling Techniques

This study used the voluntary sampling technique. The Grade 11 students were
involved in the data gathering.

Time and Place of the Study

The study was conducted from November 2017 to February 2018 in General
Pantaleon Garcia Senior High School, Imus City, Cavite.

Materials and Methods

This chapter present the materials that’s been used to assemble the metal dust
magnetizer, how it works, and what it is for.

The researchers used the following materials for this project, 9 volts battery, push
button, 13 cm 1/2 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe, dynamo, and a wire that’s a feet long to
construct the metal dust magnetizer.

Analysis

The researchers brainstormed on how to achieve a much effective cleaner in the

workplace, and came up with the metal dust magnetizer that can even clean the dirtiest
and farthest corners.

Design
the metal dust magnetizer can only carry metal dust and the magnetizer can carry up
to estimated 5 grams of metal dust.

Develop

The researchers used battery not less than 9 volts for the magnetizer to work
appropriately. The researchers chose 9 volts or higher battery because the higher the
voltage the more amount of metal dust can be magnetized.

Testing

The metal dust magnetizer needs to be manually operated by pressing the button.

The researchers started the metal dust magnetizer in the metal dust and the
researchers saw that it is working.

The evaluation tool was distributed and the evaluation tool contains to describe the
portability, functionality and efficiency.
