backing sheet, which you apply to the masks.

This is then removed with the cut lettering,
and then placed on the model. Once happy
with the placement, the carrier backing film
can be carefully removed, and the masks left
in position. Once the masks were in place I
applied a coat of the bespoke Red mix, and left
this to dry before a second coat was added.
After this the Blue was painted on, again
using Gunze shades. I would recommend that
between coats you check the edges of the
masks to see if they have lifted, and if necessary
just rub them back down. With the Red and
Blue applied, the masks were removed to reveal
several small areas of overspray to be dealt with.
Once I was happy with the painting, I sealed
everything in with a couple of gloss coats.
The minimal decals came from the kit sheet,
such as the badges, serial number, and ejector

seat warnings etc. These worked as expected
and were sealed under another layer of gloss.
Once the model had been left for a good
week to harden, I went back and started to
sand over the top of the decals to reduce their
edges with Micro Mesh. This worked well and
disguised the decals, before one final coat of
gloss was added. All this gloss gave the model
a deep lustre, which some final polishing
enhanced even further. The smaller details,
like the pitot tube were added, along with
the canopy. This was not a quick build, as the
time in-between coats was a factor. I was so
pleased with the outcome that I’m already
planning another

2017 scheme. MA

The Typhoon highly effective aircraft at

both supersonic and low speeds, achieved
through having an intentionally relaxed
stability design. It has a quadruplex digital
fly-by-wire control system providing artificial
stability, as manual operation alone could
not compensate for the inherent instability.
The fly-by-wire system is described as
‘carefree’, and prevents the pilot from
exceeding the permitted manoeuvre
envelope. Roll control is primarily achieved
by use of the wing elevons. Pitch control
is by operation of the foreplanes and
elevons, the yaw control is by rudder.
Control surfaces are moved through two
independent hydraulic systems, which also

Typhoon has jet inlets that conceal the front
of the jet engine (a strong radar target)
from radar. Many important potential radar
targets, such as the wing, canard and fin
leading edges, are highly swept, so will
reflect radar energy well away from the front
sector. Some external weapons are mounted
semi-recessed into the aircraft, partially
shielding these missiles from incoming radar
waves. In addition, radar-absorbent materials
(RAM), developed primarily by EADS/DASA,
coat many of the most significant reflectors,
such as the wing leading edges, the intake
edges and interior, the rudder surrounds,
and strakes.
The Passive Infra-Red Airborne Track
Equipment (PIRATE) system is an infrared
search and track (IRST) system mounted
on the port side of the fuselage, forward
of the windscreen. Eurofighters starting
with Tranche 1 Block 5 have the PIRATE. The
first Eurofighter Typhoon with PIRATE-IRST
was delivered to the Italian Aeronautica
Militare in August 2007. More advanced
targeting capabilities can be provided with
the addition of a targeting pod such as the
LITENING pod. The Eurofighter Typhoon
is fitted with two Eurojet EJ200 engines,
and combines the leading technologies
from each of the four European companies,
with supercruise performance, low fuel
consumption, low cost of ownership,
modular construction and significant growth
potential.

The Fairey Firefly served in the Second

modern jet aircraft, the Firefly was adapted
for other roles, including strike operations
and anti-submarine warfare, remaining a
mainstay of the FAA until the mid-1950s. UK

look odd. Therefore, in keeping with the ethos

of the build, I decided instead to keep things
simple and use the kit canopy in the closed
position. Both canopies were therefore secured
in place and masked using Eduard Mask set
EX424, before being airbrushed in Interior
Green.
As is my usual practice I now airbrushed a
dark brown basecoat over the entire airframe,
onto which the camouflage colours were
built-up in a ‘marbled’ pattern, starting with the
darkest shade and spraying successive layers
of increasingly lighter shades. This protracted
technique results in a multi-layered finish which
gives depth to the camouflage and, in my
opinion, endows the completed model with
character and gravitas. The upper camouflage
colours are very similar in density and shade,
though I decided of the two, the Dark Slate Grey
was probably very slightly darker. I began the

a sharpened toothpick and my
‘washing’ technique to remove paint
from the blade edges. The airframe
went together without problem,
though there were a lot of poorly fitting
components which resulted in gaps that
required filling. These included the wing
and tail-plane roots, around the chin intake
and the edges of the wing-root intakes. The
wings themselves were a reasonable fit, though
a plastic card fillet was required to bridge a
noticeable ‘step’ at the trailing edge/lower
fuselage joint. I had initially intended to pose
the cockpit canopy in the open position to
which end I had purchased the BarracudaCast,
vacuform canopy set. The new canopy proved
to be far too narrow to comfortably fit across
the fuselage, however, and although I toyed
with the idea of thinning the width and depth
of the upper fuselage just aft of the cockpit to
suit, I surmised that such a crude ‘fix’ would

next utilising Blu Tack ‘sausages’ to create a
soft-edged pattern. The same masking method
was used for the lower surface demarcation
line, and Colourcoats Sky (ACRN01) enamel
was built-up in the way described above,
giving the under surfaces a suitably weathered
appearance. Having allowed the basic colours
to harden for a couple of days, I used a very thin
wash of black, brown and dark grey enamel
with which to emphasise the control surfaces
and access panels, after which process was
complete, increasingly lighter filters were used
to further weather the airframe and soften the
upper camouflage effect. The final weathering
job was to use a silver watercolour pencil to
create scratches on the wing-roots in the

The decal sheet, produced by Aviprint, is
