GMX Water Treatment: Satisfied Customers Speak For Us
By Kelly Koepke© We hear a lot of hype about companies and products these days. Naturally, many companies make promises about how what they’re selling will change your life. For one company, GMX International, their customers are the best salespeople. GMX’s water conditioning systems truly live up to their advertising claims, says Ron Grazier. He and his wife June, who own furniture store Contemporary Southwest By Grazier Ltd., installed a GMX system in their East Mountains’ home in 2008. “We had remodeled our kitchen, and didn’t want to ruin our new faucets and fixtures with our hard water. We did extensive research on water softening options, but they all added sodium or potassium, would contaminate our septic system, and really wasted water, a big concern here in the desert. Our research kept bringing us back to GMX. So we called Larry Brown.” The Graziers say that it was Brown’s written, 90-day moneyback guarantee that sold them. “He put in writing that he’d personally refund our money and remove the system if we weren’t happy. Well, not only are we happy, but we started noticing within a few days that the scale and mineral build up on the fixtures we didn’t replace was starting to come off. We couldn’t believe it even though we saw it with our own eyes,” says Grazier. GMX’s convenient, costeffective solution for hard-water problems is safe for septic systems, and requires no upkeep, unlike old-fashioned salt softeners that waste water, require constant maintenance and expensive supplies. Salt-based

GMX marketing director Larry Brown (center) gathered a few of his satisfied customers to testify just how good GMX’s water conditioning system is. Pictured with Larry are Karl Zink (back left) and Donnie Bloomer (back right), and (seated left to right) Ron and June Grazier. softening systems are also not advised for swimming pools, hot tubs, or boilers, either. Because of the added sodium or potassium salts, softener systems are not recommended for plants, pets or people with heart conditions or hypertension. By contrast, GMX is safe and recommended in all these cases. Donnie Bloomer switched to GMX after a negative experience with a water softening system. “The one we had was making us feel bad, especially when we got out of the bath or shower,” he says. “We’re concerned for our health, and we can now drink the water, and the plants are thriving because there’s no extra salt in the water.” Karl Zink, a captain in the Albuquerque Fire Department, recommends GMX to his friends and fellow firefighters because he’s now installed GMX in two houses, both with swimming pools. Trained in Hazmat, he understands the chemistry of water. That convinced him that GMX was the right way to fix his hard water problems. “The mineral content of unconditioned water ruins the pool walls, filters and pumps. Because GMX is a non-invasive technique, there are no chemicals, no residue or waste. You can safely water plants or use it in swimming pools. My pools have performed beautifully, and I’ve had no problems with the GMX treatment system,” he says. Since he’s been using GMX, Zink’s recommended it to others. “I’m getting better water pressure because the pipes aren’t clogged with scale,” he adds. Dean Koop, owner and general manager of the Best Western Kachina Lodge and Meeting Center in Taos, installed the GMX system seven years ago. With nine boilers on the property and multiple water heaters to service the Lodge’s 118 rooms, Koop was constantly draining, cleaning and refilling his pipes and heaters, even shutting down each of his buildings in the spring and fall for three days each to flush out the lines. “Since the installation of GMX, we don’t ever have any rust or deposits coming from pipes, or sediment in the hot water heaters. Customers don’t say anything about the water now; they used to complain about how they’d see minerals and deposits in the tub or that water in a glass didn’t look clear. We found that after the initial installation, GMX was actually removing deposits built up in the pipes!” Aren’t you interested in a water conditioning system that dissolves scum and scale, increases your water heater’s efficiency, uses no chemicals and actually saves water? One that has a lifetime product warranty, and a 90-day, no questions asked, money-back guarantee? Give Larry Brown a call at 800-406-0469 for an information package or to schedule an appointment.

Touring New Mexico
By Jon Knudsen When it starts to get cold up north, head south for camping. City of Rocks State Park, located halfway between Silver City and Deming, just might be the perfect place to go: The scenery is spectacular, the living is easy, and the average high and low temperatures are 71 and 41 degrees in October. It has a lot of amenities, like 52 developed sites, showers, a visitor’s center, trails, exhibits, and even an observatory. It also contains some of the most unusual campsites in the state. It is called “City of Rocks” because it is composed of hundreds of rocks as big as buildings. These formations rise straight out of the desert floor and are visible for miles. The rocks are the remnants of a nearby volcano that erupted 35 million years ago. Consisting largely of ash, it was so hot that the ash welded itself together to make a solid substance called tuff. Eroded over time by freeze-thaw action and wind, what remains are columns and boulders that resemble buildings, streets, even courtyards. There have been dozens of ash-flow eruptions in southern New Mexico. The eruption that formed City of Rocks is part of the Kneeling Nun Tuff and was 1,000 times larger than the Mount St. Helens eruption of 1980. Like most destinations in New Mexico, getting there can be its own adventure. City of Rocks State Park is located just off US 180 on NM 61. Take I-25 south and turn on NM 26, also known as the Hatch cut-off, all

the way to Deming. This route passes through the chile capital of the world! So don’t forget to pick up a ristra. That tall, twisted peak you see is Cooke’s Peak, site of Fort Cummings and a still-walkable portion of the Butterfield Stage Route. Finally, the surprising Deming Museum is home to one of the largest Mimbres Pottery collections in the southwest. City of Rocks sits 30 miles northwest of Deming. Returning to Albuquerque might mean a different adventure. Go north from the state park entrance on NM 61, turning east on NM 152 at Santa Clara. This takes you right over the top of the Black Range at Emory Pass. This is a definite picture-taking car stop. Far below to the east are the villages of Kingston and Hillsboro. Beyond them is I-25 and the ride home. Jon Knudsen is a regular contributor to dukecityfix.com and occasional guest on Channel 5’s New Mexico In Focus. Email him at johnny_mango@yahoo.com.

Books of Note
Reviewed By Larry Cox “Texas: A Historical Atlas” by A. Ray Stephens, cartography by Carol Zuber-Mallison (University of Oklahoma Press, $39.95) When A. Ray Stephens wrote the “Historical Atlas of Texas” more than two decades ago, he was convinced that the relationship of history and geography could not be separated, so his book was a seamless blend of both. Now a new edition of Stephen’s landmark work about New Mexico’s neighbor to the east, thoroughly updated and expanded, has been published. With 175 newly designed maps — more than twice the number in the original volume — and illustrations in full color, the rich history of Texas is brought into sharp focus. What gives “Texas” its legs is the accessibility to its contents. This is no dry historical text. In fact, much of the book reads like a well-written novel. Stephen’s research is meticulous, and expanded essays are accompanied by multiple maps. The book is basically divided into three parts: Natural Texas examines the geology, aquifers, native plants, precipitation and weather. The Texans divides the settlement of Texas into six sections, ranging from pre-1528 Texas to the late 1800s. Modern Texas documents the years from 1900 to 2009. This is, without a doubt, one of the most comprehensive, stateof-the-art works ever compiled about Texas. It is more than just a reference, however. It is nothing less than a striking historical visual overview served up by one of the most accomplished historians in this country.

Hearmart Hearing Aids: Value, Honesty, Service
By Kelly Koepke© With the Albuquerque population aging right along with the rest of the country, a number of companies have popped up offering to fix one of the most common health concerns today – hearing loss. It seems you can’t open a newspaper or magazine, or even turn on the television, without being bombarded with ads for the latest, greatest, (and most expensive) new hearing aids. “We don’t push expensive hearing aids, or even the smallest or the most complicated. Spending more money on a hearing aid doesn’t make your hearing better, and a smaller device isn’t necessarily the best for an individual patient’s situation,” says George Bourne, a National Board for Hearing Instrument Sciences certified hearing aid dispenser, and owner of HearMart Hearing Aids, Inc. Instead, Bourne evaluates a patient’s hearing during a free, no-obligation initial consultation. Only then can the most appropriate device be determined, whether that’s an analog one that simply amplifies sound, or a digital one that makes sounds clearer. A good set of hearing aids can cost upwards of $2,500, but no hearing aid is worth $5,000 or $6,000, says Bourne, even if it is a tax deductible medical expense. “We take into consideration the overall health of our patients,” adds Bourne. “Someone with arthritis or limited eye sight isn’t able to manipulate the often tiny controls of some hearing aids. And we offer free lifetime maintenance and cleaning of all the devices we sell, as well as conduct home or assisted living facility visits. Our patients come first.” After more than 25 years in the business of helping people hear better, Bourne knows that service is what makes or breaks a company. HearMart’s excellent customer service means that most of its new customers come as referrals from current patients. Bourne knows that, because HearMart helps patients understand how to use, keep and care for their devices, they have high levels of customer satisfaction. “It’s a shame that only 20 percent of people who could benefit from hearing aids wear them. Hearing loss can be very isolating, especially for seniors and people with disabilities. Helping them hear better gets them out of their isolation,” he says. Marjorie Evjen is one of HearMart’s satisfied customers. She and her husband, both in their 80s, have purchased multiple hearing aids from Bourne in the past six years. “We’re very satisfied with George and HearMart. A friend recommended him to us because he’s honest. We had gone to another hearing aid place, and weren’t satisfied with them. George was very thorough in testing to see how our hearing was, and was friendly and easy to talk to.”

For more than 25 years George Bourne (left) and 6 years Michelle Melero (right) have been in the business of helping other people hear better. They know service is what makes or breaks a company. Evjen continues to say that if she or her husband ever has any trouble with their aids, or need adjustments, Bourne is accommodating and pleasant. In fact, her husband is picking up his latest set of hearing aids soon. HearMart is confident they have the lowest prices in the state and offer discounts to veterans and senior citizens from their location next to ABC Cake Shop at 1820 San Pedro Dr. NE, Suite 5. It’s this combination of value, honesty and service that have actually grown HearMart’s business over the past years, bucking the general industry trend. HearMart encourages its customers to shop around, though. By dealing directly with the manufacturers and selling at factory-direct prices, HearMart is able to pass its savings on to its customers. “We are often as much as $1,000 lower on the same model as the bigger, flashy stores who have a lot of advertising overhead,” Bourne continues. “An analog aid can run anywhere from $400-600, while a digital one upwards of $1,000.” HearMart Hearing Aids is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fridays are when Bourne makes house calls. So give HearMart a call at 255-8000 to schedule your free hearing evaluation today.

By Dave DeWitt I heard a television football announcer once say, “It's a perfect day for football weather.” For most of us, that means the weather inside your house in front a large-screen TV with a cold beverage of choice and some hot and spicy snacks. The ones I've picked out here are easy to make and a lot less expensive than buying everything already prepared. Get ready to kick off, and kick up your heat level a bit. El Paso Nachos This appetizer has become so popular that you don't have to travel to Texas to enjoy it, although nachos you buy outside the Southwest may bear little resemblance to the “real thing.” 1 dozen corn tortillas, cut into wedges vegetable oil for frying 3/4 cup refried beans 1/2 pound grated sharp cheddar cheese

In a large skillet, fry the tortillas in 1 1/2 inches of oil, at 350 F (medium high), until crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels. Arrange the tortillas on a pan or oven-proof plate. Place a small amount of beans on each chip and top with the grated cheese. Heat the pan under the broiler until the cheese melts or microwave the plate for 3 to 4 minutes. Top with the sour cream and jalapeño slices and serve immediately. Yield: 6 to 8 servings Heat Scale: Medium Green Chile Tortilla Pinwheels This recipe features an allpurpose filling that also goes perfectly well on crackers and finger sandwiches. Thin it with milk or light cream to make a great dip for chips or vegetable crudités. 1/2 cup chopped green New Mexican chiles that have been roasted, peeled, seeds

and stems removed 1 3-oz. package light cream cheese, softened 2 tablespoons milk or cream 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 2 teaspoons minced cilantro 3 to 4 flour tortillas Combine all the ingredients, except the tortillas, in a bowl and mix well. Wrap the tortillas in a damp towel and place in a warm oven to soften. Spread the cream cheese mixture on the tortillas and roll each tortilla as you would a jelly roll — or sushi roll, for you Japanese cuisine lovers. Slice each roll into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Arrange on a plate and garnish with sprigs of cilantro or parsley, and maybe even salsa to dollop on each bite. Yield: 48 to 60 pinwheels Heat Scale: Medium Dave DeWitt, founder of the National Fiery Foods & BBQ Show, is the author of 37 books on spicy subjects.

Here’s A Tip
by JoAnn Derson Blend sweet, juicy fruits in a chopper or blender and add to unsweetened plain yogurt for a healthy treat. •  •  • When raking leaves, use this handy-dandy hint: Rake your leaves directly onto a sheet you’ve spread on the ground. Gather up the corners and drag to your compost area. Use a paintbrush to dust wicker furniture. It can get into all the nooks and crannies better than any cloth. •  •  • Shower curtains can be hung inside a regular curtain to insulate from window drafts. •  •  • Unwrapped bars of soap can be used in closets or dresser

drawers as nice-smelling sachets until you’re ready to use them. •  •  • Use pretty photo albums for holding recipes. The recipes will be protected in the kitchen, and these books prop open for viewing better than most books do. •  •  • Electronic items like cameras and cell phones come with so many accessory cords these days. Store them in snack-size plastic baggies. Write on a small piece of paper

what the cord is for and then stick that in the bag. •  •  • Use the plastic lids from large coffee cans underneath bottles of cooking oil or syrup in kitchen cabinets. •  •  • To store cast-iron cookware, it must be completely dry. It can still get scratched up, though. Try inserting a paper plate between stacked pans to protect the cooking surface and to absorb any moisture or excess oil.

As we swing into fall, you may be looking for more dogtraining information or a bit of canine-related entertainment to go along with the change of seasons. Here are a few books that might catch your interest. “51 Puppy Tricks” (Quarry Books, $18.99) was published late last year, but just recently crossed my desk. It’s a fun book that teaches both basic behavioral-training techniques and tricks that most puppy training manuals don’t dare to tackle. Written by Kyra Sundance, this is a colorful, informative book loaded with photographs and detailed breakdowns of tricks for puppies up to 2 years of age. “Oh My Dog” by Beth Ostrosky Stern, with Kristina Grish (Simon & Schuster, $25.99) is for owners or potential dog owners looking for a general care and training manual. You & Your Child
Most kids today are natural technophiles—gracefully and enthusiastically adopting technology into their everyday lives. In fact, a recent study showed that, on average, today’s schoolaged children are consuming and using media about 7.5 hours a day. From first graders to high schoolers, technology is not something children “turn on” after school or on the weekends but is now more than ever an integral and organic addition to life. As their children move seamlessly from computer screens to video games, many parents ask, “What is the appropriate level of ‘screen time’ for my child?” It’s all a matter of balance. Today’s technology has amazing and productive applications in education. The key for parents is understanding how and when to use technology to spur their child’s interest in learning and discovery. The following tips can be helpful when considering your child’s relationship with technology: • Designate computer time with your child. Carve out 30 minutes or so to explore the Internet together, whether it’s to conduct research for a homework assignment or to virtually explore far-off locations. • Encourage creativity. Take photos from a weekend trip to the zoo or museum or from the last family vacation to create an e-book or online slide show.

Hypnosis Can Help Break Your Food Addiction
By Mary Girsh-Bock© Americans continue to struggle with obesity. It’s currently estimated that 1 in 3 Americans is considered overweight or obese. Just recently, talk show host Oprah Winfrey announced that she had gained 40 pounds, another episode in her saga to lose weight and keep it off. What about you? Despite your best efforts, do you continue to struggle with your weight? Have you lost weight in the past only to put it back on again? Do you continue to struggle with certain foods, unable to eat them in moderation? Why is it so difficult to lose weight, and, more importantly, not gain it back? According to Dr. Marge Prefontaine, until a person’s mindset is changed, there will always be a good chance that lost weight will return. “What hypnosis does is deal with food as an addiction,” says Dr. Prefontaine, who holds a doctorate in marriage and family counseling, and has been in practice for over 30 years. “When you’re stressed, you tend to eat more,” says Dr. Prefontaine. “Currently, only 15 percent of the people who lose weight keep it off for two years,” says Dr. Prefontaine. But through hypnosis, Dr. Prefontaine says she is able to help her patients determine what is causing their particular food addiction and help them address those issues, and in the process recover from their food addiction. According to Dr. Prefontaine, food is the final addiction. “Food
addiction is no different from any other type of addiction,” says Dr. Prefontaine. “In fact, studies have shown that former drug, alcohol and tobacco addicts often end up developing a food addiction as well,” says Dr. Prefontaine. “Hypnosis changes the thought process. Once the thought process has been changed, you begin to look at food differently. It stops being an addiction and simply becomes fuel for survival. You eat to live, not live to eat.” Dr. Prefontaine creates an individualized program for each of her patients. “People eat for a variety of reasons, including boredom, stress or depression,” says Dr. Prefontaine. For instance, after the program, she says a patient previously addicted to sugar will be able to look at a plate of chocolate chip cookies with indifference. If you take a look at Dr. Prefontaine’s website: www.weightnomorehypnosis.com, you can read letters of appreciation, such as the following: Gaby from Albuquerque says, “This is by far the best way to lose weight. The first month I dropped 20 pounds and the next month another 10; the best part is that it was so easy.” Hypnosis is no longer greeted with the skepticism of years past, says Dr. Prefontaine. Hypnotherapy is now being used for controlling hypertension and easing pain. In fact, Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Florida now uses hypnotherapy during surgery. Hospital studies have shown that patients

Dr. Marge Prefontaine, PhD., shown here with her dog Yogi, treats food addiction through hypnosis. “Food addiction is no different from any other type of addiction,” she says. choosing hypnotherapy over traditional general anesthesia have half as many post-operative complications. Several years ago, the television show “20/20” did a program comparing various weight loss methods, including hypnosis, the Atkins diet, regular workouts, and working with a nutritionist. Hypnosis won, with study participants losing more weight, and losing it easier. Along with offering weight loss programs through hypnosis, Dr. Prefontaine also offers grief therapy, marriage and family counseling, and relationship therapy. According to Dr. Prefontaine, psychotherapy can help you better manage stressful situations, establish more fulfilling relationships, resolve long-standing emotional roadblocks, or properly mourn the loss of a loved one. Dr. Marge Prefontaine recognizes that everyone’s situation is highly unique and requires an individualized treatment program. Whether your issues center around an eating disorder, a desire to lose and keep off weight, or a painful divorce, be assured that your treatment program will be designed especially for you. To schedule an appointment, call Dr. Prefontaine at 8211948 or visit one of her websites at www.drmarge.com or www.weightnomorehypnosis.com.

I lost 40 pounds. I had tried everything. Nothing worked. Used diet pills, diet drinks, diet plans, even the one-night hotel hypnosis. It was all a waste of time and money. You & Your Health
With school in full swing for several weeks now and parents juggling extracurricular schedules, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more important than ever at school and in the home. Even with busy school schedules, it’s important to eat and drink healthfully. Incorporating healthy eating and drinking habits into the family routine can be easy — and rewarding. For instance, with a few simple substitutions parents can transform a typical packed lunch into a delicious yet nutritional powerhouse. And when it’s done properly, kids won’t miss a thing. A few tips: • Swap white bread and tortillas for whole wheat. • Replace high-calorie spreads with lower-calorie versions, and/or mustard. • Think about increasing flavor and texture with healthful additions. Layering veggies on a sandwich really amps up its nutritional content. • Consider baked or airpopped treats instead of fried chips. • Trail mix, especially one full of healthful nuts and dried fruits, is a great snack that provides lasting energy. • Packing a bottle of water instead of a sugary beverage is a convenient way to help save 145 calories a day. Water keeps kids healthfully hydrated and it can also help maintain concentration and alertness, whether at school or on the playing field.

Fall Fixups Elevate Indoor Living
Add Pizazz to Each Room to Prepare for the Coming Months Inside
he ebbing sun and dropping mercury in the garden thermometer signal the end of summer. The shorter, cooler days also mean you might be coming back inside from the great outdoors to discover your home could use a little pizazz. After all, you spent the past few months soaking up the rays while you worked and played in your yard rather than inside the house. It takes only a few quick fixes, combined with some creativity and elbow grease, to transform the rooms where you spend most of your time. As you look around the house, ask yourself this, “If I could fix only one thing in each room, what would that be?” These answers are your quick fixes. Study your foyer, for starters. It’s the first thing guests see when they enter your home. What can you do to make it more inviting? Maybe it needs a little more color. Add a colorful rug to the entry way and maybe a floral arrangement to the console by the front door. Or maybe less clutter? A small storage bench can reduce clutter — shoes, school bags and sports equipment — to a minimum and add a clean, inviting look to this first-impression space.

T

Throw pillows or a single new piece of furniture that add a splash of color to your living room can give you a fresh outlook on familiar spaces.

If your house is like any other, the kitchen likely is the other main gathering place for both family and visiting friends. These high-traffic areas usually can use fresh paint more frequently than other rooms. Next, what about your living room? Is it too austere? Does it sit unused? While it might be out of your budget to change the furniture, you can warm it up

and make it a space where people want to sit and visit by getting rid of those formal, outdated window treatments. Dress windows with light blinds or sheer curtains that provide privacy but allow light to filter through. You might also want to rearrange the furniture into a grouping that’s less formal and more inviting. Even your favorite lounging

space — the living room — can use a little upgrading to keep it modern, fun and welcoming. One easy change for this oftenused space is new throw pillows. Add a splash of fresh color to the familiar simply by swapping out pillows on couches and chairs or adding a nook of colorful floor pillows for family members who prefer to sprawl on the floor to watch TV and play video games.

Some simple steps can help you get both a warm glow from your fireplace and some heat for your home, too.

Hearth& Home
Tips on How to Improve Fireplace Efficiency
The warm glow of a fire emanating from your wood fireplace on a cold winter night sounds romantic and inviting, and for the few hours that it is actually burning, it may even make you feel warmer. However, the cold facts are that a wood-burning fireplace is extremely inefficient and that you are letting more heat up the chimney than is warming the house. And even worse, after the fire peters out, the chimney will continue to suck warm air out of your home. Fortunately, there are ways to make a fireplace more efficient so that you can enjoy the warm glow of your fireplace — and even get some heat out of it — without throwing money up your chimney. Close the Fireplace Damper First, when you are not using the fireplace, make sure the damper is closed. Leaving it open allows warm air to be sucked up and out of the home via the chimney. Install Glass Doors Second, install glass doors over the front of the fireplace box opening. There are numerous glass doors that you can choose from that are designed to fit most standard-sized box openings. By installing glass doors, you can improve your fireplace’s heating efficiency dramatically. First, by keeping the fireplace doors closed when the fireplace is not in use or when the fire is nearly out, you can prevent warm air from escaping the home. Second, most fireplaces have a vent for drawing in fresh outside air to feed the fire. So when the fire has died down, you can close the glass doors and allow the fire to burn out slowly. Install a Fireback Third, install a cast-iron fireback in the back of your firebox. A cast-iron fireback not only protects the back masonry of your fireplace but also absorbs heat and helps to reflect light and heat into the room. Install Wood-Burning Insert Finally, you can maximize your fireplace’s efficiency by installing a wood-burning insert. Though installing a wood-burning insert is admittedly quite expensive, it is by far the best way to maximize your fireplace’s efficiency. A wood stove by design is simply much more energy-efficient than a fireplace. There are many types of wood stove inserts from which to choose, and most offer glass windows for viewing the fire. So before you let any more heat up your chimney this winter, consider improving your fireplace’s efficiency.

Ban TheBeige
Basic Tips Can Help Design-Deprived Home
Ban the beige! That’s the message from designer Genevieve Gorder for do-it-yourself home decorators this fall. The star of HGTV’s popular “Dear Genevieve” makeover show, Gorder has been transforming the homes of desperate designdeprived viewers for four seasons. Her fans also remember her previous stint on TV’s “Trading Spaces” before she joined HGTV. In her 19-year career, this New Yorker has worked her “before” and “after” magic on everything from the kitchen floor to the bathroom sink. She has turned a dingy laundry into an elegant foyer and created a happening family room out of a dark basement. And she has lots of advice for homeowners who want to take the plunge into turning their homes from blah beige boxes into stylish havens. Here are her top tips on how to get started on those projects you’ve been putting off around the house: • “Everyone seems to live in beige and cream,” Gorder says. “They think that it’s safe and that their homes will have more resale value. But it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Paint is one of the least expensive ways to transform a house, and it’s very easy to change if you don’t like it.” • “Don’t over-think the design process,” Gorder says. “Fear” is one of the biggest obstacles most homeowners face when it comes to starting design projects in their homes. “They think that if they don’t have a room that looks like it came from Page 16 of a Pottery Barn catalog, it won’t look right, so they get scared and end up doing nothing but sabotaging themselves.” • Use the resources at your fingertips. “There are no excuses anymore with the availability of the Internet,” Gorder says. “There are so many people doing so many different things now. You can find amazing furniture and accessories.” • Keep it personal, the designer says. “Create what I call ‘pauses,’” she says. “Put together vignettes of personal items that make you stop and pause to look at them, whether it’s a group of family photos on your front entry table or a piece of art under a glass cloche in a bookshelf. Tell a story about yourself.” • Mix old and new. “It’s great to mix vintage and modern pieces,” says Gorder. • Keep evolving your style. “There are lots of things you can

Genevieve Gorder says high style is within anyone’s reach.

do to update your rooms,” Gorder says. “Accessories are very inexpensive and can give you instant impact with a wonderful piece of sculpture on a table or a $10 bou-

quet of flowers.” • And perhaps her most important? “Concentrate on making your home a beautiful place,” she says. “After all, it’s a refuge.”

Timeless Tile
Classic Look Gets Twist with Latest Ceramic Products
Trendy and timeless, practical and whimsical, durable and beautiful — when it comes to building materials, ceramic tile wins the heart of many a designer and homeowner for its ability to offer the best of many worlds. Technological advances and passionate designers have carried modern ceramic tile a long way from the basic, utilitarian looks of yesteryear. Home renovation and building go on year-round, but as with any design statement, each season brings new looks and trends. This autumn’s trends share a flair for boldness and innovation. Color: Strong saturated tones such as midnight blue, royal purple and deep chartreuse will join autumn’s traditional power hues of rich reds and burnt sienna. Reds are especially dominant, appearing in every shade from fiery orange-reds to deep merlot. You’ll also see high-contrast color schemes such as black and white. This fall’s tile collections also employ texture and geometry to underscore the contrast of light and shadow. Pattern: Fall pattern trends

include micro and macro patterns within a single tile, largerthan-life designs that incorporate multiple tiles, and optical illusions. Size: It’s difficult to pin down a trend in size these days, since technology has made it possible for manufacturers to produce tiles in a wide range of dimensions. Tiles can be as minute as 5/8 by 5/8 inches, or as grand as 4 feet by 4 feet. As manufacturers and designers continue to push innovation in technology and style, ceramic tile will continue to appeal to homeowners and home builders for its versatility, durability, beauty and ecofriendly qualities.

Kitchen Redo
he kitchen is the command center of every home. It is the focal point, where people gather to eat, relax and socialize. Consequently, kitchens take a lot of use and abuse, and that’s why kitchen makeovers are so high on homeowners’ remodeling lists. There are numerous kitchen makeover ideas that you can employ to transform your old and outdated kitchen into a modern and contemporary one. Some are quite expensive; others are not so expensive. Kitchen cabinets: At the heart of every kitchen makeover project is a well-thought-out kitchen cabinet design. The kitchen cabinet design specifies items such as the size and location of cabinets, the kitchen work area and where kitchen appliances will reside. In addition, it defines your unique style based on the types of cabinetry and features you choose. For example, do you prefer a modern or country kitchen style? Kitchen flooring: As part of every new kitchen remodeling design, you should evaluate the myriad kitchen flooring choices. Vinyl, wood, laminate and ceramic tile all have their pros and cons. Kitchen appliances: Stainless steel kitchen appliances are what most homeowners and homebuyers prefer today. Consequently, including stainless steel kitchen appliances in your kitchen remodeling plans is very wise. Kitchen lighting: Abundant kitchen lighting is paramount in every kitchen makeover project. Consider overhead work lighting, as well as general room lighting. In addition, consider kitchen lighting in the kitchen cabinet soffits, as well as under the top kitchen cabinets.

Get Organized
Maximize Your Space and Reduce Stress
If autumn has inspired you to spruce up your home for upcoming indoor entertaining, chances are you’ve been looking around the house and thinking, “I really need to get organized.” Even if your fall schedule seems filled to the brim, now is a great time to clean up that clutter, says professional organizer Samantha Buck. “Being organized brings a sense of calm in an otherwise chaotic world,” she says. Buck recommends using the SPACE formula — sort, purge, assign a home, containerize and equalize. Tackle your closets by cleaning out clothing that doesn’t fit, is hopelessly out of style or that you simply never wear. Most of Buck’s clients request that she help organize their kitchens. “I mostly help people rearrange cabinets,” she says. “Sometimes you can find extra space just by doing that. You also don’t need 20 coffee mugs or stacks and stacks of plastic cups for your kids.” It is OK to have a junk drawer, according to Buck. “I have a junk drawer in my kitchen,” she says. “But you have to clean it out once in a while.” When it comes to counter space, most people have too much stuff sitting around. “When you have a kitchen, you need that work space to cook,” Buck says. Keeping your kids’ stuff organized is important, too. “Kids need what I call a ‘landing spot,’ and if you’re lucky enough to have a mudroom that’s big enough, then use this space,” Buck says. Having an organized home office space makes life easier. And if your garage is so crowded that your car is parked in the driveway, you should really get it out of the elements once and for all.

One of the best ways to prepare for the coming winter months, when we spend most of our time indoors, is to get the house organized, like this entryway bench and hooks.

Take Steps To Stem Air Infiltration
ir infiltration — that’s what energy efficiency experts call those chilly drafts across the floor in the winter. And it’s expensive. Here’s what to do to tighten your home before temperatures fall this year. “The first thing to do is easy and free,” says energy efficiency expert Scott Hanauer. “Make sure your windows are shut during heating and cooling seasons. And locked. This is especially important with double-hung windows. The upper sash slides down, and you can’t see it behind the curtains or mini blinds. Locking creates tighter, better weatherstripping.” Second, caulk around windows and door trim boards, inside and outside, with an acrylic latex caulk, Hanauer says, and make sure weatherstripping around doors is tight. If you can see light around a closed door on a sunny day, he says, you need new or better weatherstripping between the door and frame.

A

After those initial steps, consider scheduling an energy audit by the local utility company or a private weatherization contractor. The audit should include a blower door test, which Hanauer likens to a large whole-house fan inside an adjustable frame. “It depressurizes the house, so air from the outside is sucked in through any openings,” he says. The test shows leaks in windows and doors, as well as exterior wall outlets and switches, plumbing chases, attic accesses, water spigots, electric lines, places where round pipes pass through square holes and more. Then check your home’s insulation, particularly in the attic. Insulation is measured by R-value. The higher the R-value the less heat transfer there is in winter and summer. How much is enough varies by region, but in general, Hanauer says, more is better. Homeowners also may consider replacing loose windows and doors. For those evaluating

Insulating the attic is the number one thing a homeowner can do to increase a home’s energy efficiency.

replacement windows, Hanauer suggests casement windows, which crank out, rather than double-hung windows, which slide up and down. “Casements have a compression fit that creates less friction and wear on the weatherstripping and provide a tighter seal,” he says. Windows should be double- or triple-pane with a low-emission, or low-e, reflective coating.

Don’t know where to start? “Start at the upper levels and work your way down,” Hanauer says. “That’s the most efficient way to control not just the draft blowing across your easy chair but all air infiltration and air stratification (having a hot upstairs and cold downstairs).” But “do what you can, and don’t worry about what you can’t,” Hanauer says.

Odors Begone!
Moldy Smells Often Sign of Dampness, Must Be Addressed
Musty indoor odors not only are unpleasant to your olfactory receptors but also can be harmful to your health. If a moldy scent is emanating from your home, it is often indicative of a bigger issue. It’s imperative to locate the source, decipher the cause and eliminate the problem quickly. Your health and nose will thank you. A moldy odor generally is caused by persistent dampness somewhere in your home. This not only is annoying but also can create serious health risks. Dampness also causes the structural lumber supporting the house to decay and attracts carpenter ants and termites. There are two possible sources of dampness in a home. It can be generated internally from bathing, cooking or even a humidifier set at an unreasonably high level. It also can come from outdoors through a leaky foundation, slab or roof. High indoor humidity levels are most common in newer houses, which are more airtight. In older homes, the source of dampness is usually from outdoors. When a house is built over several different types of foundations, it likely consists of several additions built at different times. There often can be leaks where the various additions were attached to one another. Just to be certain the dampness problem is not caused by internal factors, check for any water leaks around the toilets. A common place for leaks is where the tank mounts to the bowl. If the toilet feels loose on the floor, the wax ring at the base may be deformed and leaking. Both of these items are easy to repair yourself.

Winterize Your Yard This Fall
When you’ve mulched the last of the leaves this fall, your lawn care isn’t quite done. This transition time from your lawn’s active growth to its healthy dormancy is when you need to take some extra care to help prepare it for next year’s growth. Assess: Thoroughly walk your property and inspect lawn, trees and shrubs. Identify problem areas in need of treatment, pruning or replacement. Note patchy areas, where grass has thinned out or is in need of valuable nutrients and appears as light green. Prune: A little well-timed pruning goes a long way toward improving your landscape and protecting your investment. When pruning your trees and shrubs, use these techniques: • Use sharp, high-quality tools that are matched in size to the job so they cut without tearing. • Trim small branches up to 1/2 inch in diameter with hand shears. • Cut branches up to 1 inch in diameter with loppers. • Cut large branches of one to two inches in diameter with a pruning saw. • Shear formal hedges with hedge shears. Replace: Fall is the ideal time to seed bare lawn areas and overseed healthy grass to improve lawn thickness and density. Lightly rake an inch of surface soil to remove dead debris and properly prepare the area for seeding. Select a grass seed that is the same type as the grass already growing in your lawn. Lightly apply seed to the soil surface and gently pack to firm the seed into the soil. Water lightly until the seed has fully emerged. Feed: A good fall feeding gives roots of lawns, trees and shrubs the energy needed to prepare for a healthy spring green revival. Keep fertilizer on target to prevent run-off.

Fall is the perfect time to plant in your home’s yard.

Hardwood
Is It Hiding Under Carpet in Your Home?
Owners of older homes often are drawn to them by their stately charm and historical significance. Without modern materials and techniques, builders had to rely more on craftsmanship and carpentry in the days before houses were mass-produced. If there’s a possibility that a well-built hardwood floor is under your carpet, care should be taken during removal so the floor underneath isn’t damaged. Pull up a corner of the carpet with a pair of pliers, tearing it away from the tack strip on the floor. Continue around the room until all of the carpet is free. Removing the tack strips requires more care. A small pry bar can be used to pull out the tack strips, and wedging a drywall taping knife between the floor and pry bar will protect the floor from scratches. Once the carpet and tack strips are gone, the floor can be examined to determine whether it’s worth refinishing. Many 19th-century homes had neatly laid hardwood floors, but many others had floors that were cobbled together using softwood boards of random sizes. Refinishing a floor that was hastily built may result in simply the flouting of its flaws, and new carpet may be a better option. If a floor has been deemed worthy of refinishing, the next step is to start sanding. As the case is with many other procedures, prep and cleanup can take as much time and work as the actual sanding, if not more. After the floor has been sanded using 50-grit paper, further sanding is recommended using increasingly smoother paper, indicated by the higher grit number (60-80-100, for example). Once the floor is flat and the old finish has been sanded off, it’s time to apply the stain using rags or a chamois, depending on the product. After the stain has dried — typically about two hours — the new finish can be applied. An oil-based finish takes eight to 10 hours to dry, whereas a water-based one takes two to four hours. A government-certified respirator should be worn at all times rather than a flimsy dust mask that doesn’t create a proper seal. Accumulated sand dust can become combustible, so sanders should be cleaned after each day. Stain rags are notorious fire hazards and need to be disposed of properly, not just tossed in the trash can. It would be a shame to have a beautifully finished floor go up in flames.

Maintenance Benefits Composite Decks
Many people choose to build decks with composite materials because of the low-maintenance characteristics of the product. Although composite products are, in fact, less work then traditional wood decks, some care is required to keep the product looking great over time. As the cooler weather approaches, there are a few things you can do to protect the look of your composite deck: Basic Cleaning Composite materials reduce the reoccurring work of painting, staining or sealing, but for the best results, a regular cleaning with an eco-friendly cleaner is required. TimberTech, a leading manufacturer of composite decking products, recommends using Corte Clean and spraying the deck with a pressure washer before winter weather approaches. To clean with a power washer, use a fan tip nozzle and spray in the direction of the brush/grain pattern. Be sure to use proper safety precautions, including the recommended maximum pressure of 1500 psi. Ice and Snow Removal For homeowners who live in harsh winter environments, it's important to remove ice and snow from your deck in order to eliminate damage. For ice removal, it is best to use either rock salt or calcium chloride on the composite surface. However, either of these products may leave a white residue, which can be removed by either rinsing with water or a mild soap- andwater solution. Prevention Is Key Composite products are formulated to inhibit mildew growth and minimize staining. It is important, however, to rinse off any composite product periodically with a hose in order to prevent the build-up of pollen and debris. Even if it appears clean, mildew stains may occur where moisture, pollen and dirt are present, even in a dry climate like New Mexico.

Fall is a good time to give your composite deck some care.

Are You CO-Safe?
NEED TO CROSS OFF A TO-DO OR TWO?
Just when you think you’re safe, a recent nationwide survey has uncovered that a majority of American homes are dangerously under-protected when it comes to fire and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Even those equipped with smoke and CO alarms are at risk according to the study, which revealed that two-thirds of U.S. households are not in compliance with the national recommendation for the number of smoke alarms set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The current recommendation by the NFPA (www.nfpa.org) is to have at least one CO alarm on each level and one in or near every bedroom or sleeping area. For smoke alarms, homes should have one installed at the top of each staircase and one in every bedroom or sleeping area. The Home Safety Council also suggests implementing the following precautions: • Regularly test smoke and CO

alarms. Regular maintenance is just as important as having the correct number of alarms. • Plan and practice a fire safety drill. Identify exits and if necessary, equip second-floor rooms with escape ladders. Add a “network” of smoke alarms. Many homeowners may not realize there are alarm networks available for home use, which are wirelessly connected and “talk” to one another to alert to a fire in a different room. Professional Coatings: Guaranteed Stucco Work
By Page Turner© “Workmanship — that’s how we stand above,” says Brian Oertel of Professional Coatings, a 27-year old company specializing in complete stucco restorations of homes and yard walls, as well as new windows with coordinated installation. An approved applicator of all exterior coatings, Professional Coatings’ workmanship can be seen on thousands of homes in the Albuquerque metro area. Oertel, Professional Coatings’ owner, makes no bones about his work ethic. “I was brought up in the construction industry to do the job right the first time,” he says. That starts with the communication between Oertel and his clients. In talking with customers over the years, Oertel says he has learned that if a homeowner has been unhappy with a restucco job by another company in the past, it is because the contractor, a) did poor work; b) provided no one for the customer to communicate with; c) the company owner was unavailable; and, d) problems were not addressed. Oertel is hands-on with every job, conducting a pre-job walk-through with homeowners and spelling out what to expect from his crews. He’s at the job site for the start of every project, inspects each phase thereafter, and does the final walk-through, assuring each job is completed in a timely, professional manner to the high quality specifications of all Professional Coatings work. “Your house is my house,” Oertel says. “Based on the scope of the project, I won’t do anything to your home that I wouldn’t do to my own.” A variety of considerations are involved in restuccoing a home, and consumers face many choices when it comes to stucco products and application methods. To begin with, there is traditional stucco, a cement-based, concretelike product; and synthetic stucco, a 100-percent acrylic/elastomeric products. “Synthetic stucco is a great product,” says Oertel, “but it’s not right for everyone, or each application.”

It’s absolutely essential that homeowners be aware of the potential pitfalls of stucco restoration. “Anyone can put a color coat (of stucco) on and make it look good,” says Oertel. “But when the

work is not done properly, problems will typically occur within one to five years.” Applying stucco over an improperly repaired and/or cured basecoat can result in a weak substrate — the surface or base on which it is applied. “Putting stucco over a poor basecoat or a severely deteriorated, painted or textured coating surface is risky and can’t be trusted,” Oertel says. When new stucco is applied over painted stucco, the paint becomes the substrate, and paint is not a reliable foundation. Furthermore, painting over your stucco is never a good idea because paint will eventually trap moisture and cause the color coat and outer surface of the base coat to weaken. “There are certain products and application methods that we have learned don’t work well,” says Oertel. Professional Coatings prefers the old-fashioned method of applying stucco with a hand trowel. Though the process is labor intensive, hand troweling provides the tightest bond between the stucco and substrate in contrast to other methods such as spraying. These other methods also allow the thinning or stretching of stucco, a no-no in Oertel’s book. “We exceed New Mexico state codes and manufacturers’ highest specifications,” he explains. “We do not cut corners, and we do not stretch the materials in any way.” Professional Coatings specializes in complete stucco restorations of homes and yard walls with exterior wall space ranging in size from a minimum 1,500 square feet to well over 18,000 square feet. While many stucco applicators focus mainly on the bid, Oertel takes a consultant approach with clients. Oertel is dedicated to spending enough time on-site to make an assessment and consult with the client. Unlike many others in the business, “I won’t just tell you what you want to hear,” says Oertel. “I propose what is needed for a lasting restucco.” In determining the scope of work, Oertel discusses goals and

visions with his clients. Why are you looking at restuccoing? Are you installing new windows? Are your home’s parapets damaged? Is your stucco faded? What are the landscaping consideration; does the property contain numerous, high-moisture areas such as: flower beds, sprinklers and roof drains? If so, these areas are important considerations in creating the work plan. Moisture can cause significant damage to the stucco. These kinds of questions help Oertel ascertain how Professional Coations can best serve its customers. The next step is a thorough inspection of your home. “The key to restoration is all the prep work,” explains Oertel. A complete walk-around and inspection

of your home includes the examination of all the walls, roof lines, parapets and chimney caps. On a flat roof with parapets, Professional Coatings rebuilds all parapets, not just where it appears to be necessary. “I want the parapets to last the life of the restucco. We have a minimum of a 98 percent success rate over a 15-year period with our parapet rebuild system,” says Oertel. Likewise all the chimney caps are redone. Professional Coatings also rebuilds around windows as needed. If new windows are being installed, Professional Coatings will rebuild around your new windows with a method that prevents shadow cracking. Heavy watering of newly restored areas ensures proper curing and is critical to the

success of the restucco. This kind of careful attention to detail is the quality Oertel demands. Professional Coatings’ warrantee in most cases is transferable to the next homeowner. According to Oertel, provided there is proper drainage around the building, a restucco job should last 12 to 18 years or more if properly done. If you’re in the market for a stucco restoration or new windows, Professional Coatings is the company for the job. “We are competitively priced for the workmanship and the quality of products used,” says Oertel. “We do not cut corners — the job is done right the first time, guaranteed.” Oertel will provide an on-site proposal with your consultation. Mountain West Sales Warms Hearth and Home
By Crystal-Starr Caward© There’s more than the scent of roasting chiles in the air. There’s a crisp edge to the breezes that turns our thoughts to the crackle of a warm, fragrant fire in the comfort of our homes. Mountain West Sales in Albuquerque is a family-owned and operated retailer of quality hearth products, as well as a huge array of other items which can be found on their website www.mountainwestsales.net. They carry wood, pellet and gas stoves, inserts and fireplaces; as well as a complete line of chimney products. Jim Lyle remembers working his summer days for his father while he was in school. He came on board full time after graduating from the University of Texas in 2000. “I’ve been here full time for nearly 11 years, but I learned all aspects of the business during the summers when I was young.” Mountain West Sales just celebrated its 20th year in business last year. Their quality staff is part of the reason. “Most of our staff has been with us for many years,” Jim says. “Our staff members tend to stick around for a very long time. I hear from many customers that one of the reasons that they bought from us is that they were treated so well by our salespeople. Their questions were answered, they weren’t pressured to buy something about which they were unsure, and they received very good information that helped them reach their decision, whatever it might have been.” Ingrid L. has been thrilled with Mountain West’s willingness to respond to her questions before and after her purchase. “I appreciate that I still receive prompt answers to any questions I have today. Nowadays, you often don't even get a reply!” Jim has been disheartened over the years by the decline in customer service. “There seems to be a sense of entitlement among salespeople, almost as if they are doing you a

Focus on Seniors
By Matilda Charles Don’t you love it when senior myths are proven wrong? Turns out we’re not the reason for so many road accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just finished a study to determine the financial costs of accidents: loss of productivity, medical costs and so on. As a by-product of the study, it determined which age group has the most accidents. Answer: It’s not us. Totals for loss of productivity and medical costs for accidents for one year of the study: $99 billion, which includes auto accidents, pedestrians and motorcycle and bicycle riders. Here are a few highlights: • Teenagers are 14 percent of the population, but they account for 28 percent of the accidents and 31 percent of the cost ($31 billion). • Motorcycle riders had 12 percent of the cost ($12 billion), pedestrians 10 percent of the cost ($10 billion) and bike riders 5 percent ($5 billion). So, just how many accidents are we seniors responsible for? A mere 3 percent. And we account for 13 percent of the population. Still, to keep up our good record, it might be smart to take a driving course designed especially for seniors. These courses offer information on how to keep an eye out for other traffic, dealing with distractions and how to adjust to the physical changes caused by aging. There’s an inexpensive online course by AARP (www.aarp.org) or call 1-888-227-7669 to find a class near you.

ABQ Home EXPO Readies for Best Show Ever
By Mike English© Since she took over the ABQ Home & Lifestyle Expo three years ago, longtime interior designer and Granite Transformations owner Del Reanne Lucas has focused on giving Albuquerque’s most established home show a jolt of fresh energy. The 2010 show, scheduled for Oct. 23 and 24 in the Manuel Lujan Building at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds, is shaping up to be the most creative and innovative show ever. “This year’s event, which has been renamed The ABQ Home EXPO, will feature items and services that nobody has ever seen in this town,” Lucas says. It’s not that New Mexico’s biggest home expo needs a major makeover. Close to 20,000 people attended last year’s event, after all, and the annual lineup of 200 to 300 exhibitors is a lock as The ABQ Home EXPO enters its 19th year. But that hasn’t stopped Lucas from researching the latest trends in home shows and pursuing a goal to put The ABQ Home EXPO on a par with large shows in cities like Denver or Phoenix. “We’re very committed to quality,” she says. In that spirit of innovation, creativity and quality, this year’s ABQ Home EXPO will include three new features, each with their own sections of the exhibit area: “With Great Style,” “In the Know” and “On the Edge.” • With Great Style: A section featuring vignettes of highend furnishings and home décor — real ideas for real people, composed in a compelling fashion. Some of the companies that will display their wares include Damian Velasquez and Lauren Fine Furnishings. “People will be able to see new possibilities for furnishing and interior design of their own homes,” Lucas says. • In the Know: A designated area featuring experts ready to answer questions. People are encouraged to bring their plans and challenges and receive free advice. Whether it’s landscap48

as Lucas describes it, the new ABQ Home EXPO covers everything in the home and is just as likely to appeal to women as men. Lucas says this year’s EXPO also has an exciting new title sponsor, KTM Construction, and the level of interest from exhibitors is surprisingly high. She attributes this to businesses working harder than ever to reach consumers in the current economy, which is a great advantage to the homeowner attending the EXPO. “It’s face to face,” she says. “As a consumer, you can touch it, feel it, all in one spot, and build that relationship. The level of expertise is excellent.” Lucas also sees larger real estate trends driving interest in this year’s ABQ Home EXPO. It’s no secret that home sales are lagging nationwide, including the Albuquerque market. The flip side of this trend, Lucas notes, is that people are investing in their current homes. “People are nesting, and what better place to spend money than in your own home,” she says. There’s always a project that can raise the quality of life in a home, and The ABQ Home EXPO is a great opportunity to get the ball rolling. The hours for the 2010 ABQ Home EXPO are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and children 8 years and older

Real Estate Corner
By Tom Bruno Real estate is not rocket science. In fact, in some respects selling real estate is simple. However, there is a big difference between simple and easy. Someone once told me many years ago that refinishing furniture is simple. You need to remove the old finish and stain, and put the new stain and finish on. It is simple in concept, but I know first hand it is not that easy. For an experienced refinisher, it probably is easy. Ultimately, a good real estate agent’s greatest value comes from being able to guide you safely and efficiently through the sale or purchase process. The average home owner may only purchase and sell three or four houses in a lifetime. In the nine years I have been in real estate, I have personally sold around 200-plus homes representing buyers and sellers. Since every sale is a bit different and the market is ever changing, each sale has held valuable lessons that I use to help me to guide my home sellers and home buyers. This is called, of course, experience. For a quick analogy, compare the real estate agent’s job to an airline pilot. Our job is to get you where you want to be, quickly and safely. You would never think to try and pilot the plane on your next trip, because there is too much at risk if you make a mistake. So whether you are selling or buying, you should have a good Realtor® representing your interests. There is too much at risk not to. Provided by Tom Bruno, Realtor® with MarketPlace Homes. Axiom: The Last Heating/Cooling Call You’ll Make
Longtime certified contractor for plumbing and air conditioning aims for excellence
By Crystal-Starr Caward© Axiom: A self evident truth that requires no proof. Mario LoPrinzi, owner of Axiom Home Services, set the bar as high as he could when he created his heating and cooling business. He wanted his customers to know that his company would be the last word on their home care when it came to heating and cooling. “I am the first one on and the last one off of every job. I am there until it is done and it isn’t done unless it is done right!” says Mario. Mario has been in the industry for 35 years. He holds an MM98 — the highest certification for air conditioning and plumbing — and is wellrespected in the mechanical community. While certified for both residential and commercial servicing, Mario specializes in residential applications. He has been saddened over the years by the number of homeowners who call him to fix problems left behind by less-committed contractors. “I can promise my customers I will be the last call they will make,” Mario says. “My dad always said, ‘You’re only as good as your last job!’ I live by that rule. No one else’s reputation is on the line but my own. I want to be sure my customers can rely on that.” Sandra P. of Albuquerque was one of those unfortunate homeowners who discovered too late that the contractor she hired wasn’t all he promised. She and her family started a new construction home two years ago. Sadly, though she asked many questions, her contractor refused to help her understand her heating and cooling system. The result was a frustrating tangle of poorly installed ductwork

Axiom Home Services owner Mario LoPrinzi operates his business with a simple principal: “I am the first one on and the last one off of every job. I am there until it is done and it isn’t done unless it is done right.” LoPrinzi says he learned his business ethic from his father.

Mario doesn’t dream of a big company with big crews. He dreams of a company that can give its word and back it up with quality work done right the first time. Most of his customers come from referrals. “When you are doing it right, there’s no need for flashy marketing tactics,” he reflects. Mario believes that now is the time to invest in a high efficiency heating and cooling system. Tax credits through Dec. 31 can save homeowners hundreds of dollars. And the slow economy makes this a great time to get the best deals. “Prices will only go up,” he says. Axiom Home Services serves the greater Albuquerque area with about a 60-mile radius. They can get your home ready for seasons to come. And that’s an axiom worth knowing! Call Axiom Home Services at 505-792-9742 for the best care in heating and cooling for your home.

The History Channel On Oct. 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed in Detroit. It had a 22 horsepower, four-cylinder engine, could go as fast as 40 mph and could run on gasoline or hemp-based fuel. On Oct. 3, 1995, at the end of a sensational trial, former football star O.J. Simpson is acquitted of the brutal 1994 double murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. The decision proves controversial, with many believing in Simpson’s guilt. On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect them from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the Cuban Missile Crisis erupted. On Oct. 7, 1913, for the first time, Henry Ford’s entire Highland Park, Mich., automobile factory is run on an assembly line. This cut the man-hours required to complete one Model T from 12-1/2 hours to six. Further improvements reduced the time required to 93 man-minutes. On Oct. 8, 1871, a spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary ignites a two-day blaze that kills between 200 and 300 people, destroys 17,450 buildings and leaves 100,000 homeless. Legend has it that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern and started the fire. In 1997, the Chicago City Council exonerated Mrs. O’Leary and her cow. On Oct. 9, 1992, a meteorite crashes into a Chevy Malibu owned by 18-year-old Michelle Knapp in Peekskill, N.Y. The bowling ball-size rock weighed 28 pounds and smelled of rotten eggs. It was confirmed that the object was a genuine meteorite and came from the inner edge of the main asteroid belt in space, between Jupiter and Mars.

By Larry Cox Q: I have a $20 bill printed by the Confederate States of America in Richmond in February of 1864. Does it have any value? — Albert, Ormond Beach, Fla. A: The value of a piece of currency is based on several factors, including both condition and rarity. All Confederate currency has some value, but most of the smaller bills are fairly common. An exception is the $500 note, which generally is worth from $200 to $400 depending on condition. One of the best references is Confederate States Paper Money: Civil War Currency From the South by Arlie R. Slabaugh, available for $21.27 at amazon.com. Q: I have a large crock that is marked “Red Wing Union Stoneware Company, Redwing,

A: The Red Wing Stoneware Company was founded in 1877, and in 1894 joined with Minnesota Stoneware Company and North Star Stoneware Company to organize a selling agency called the Union Stoneware Company. There are several excellent price guides. I especially like the Red Wing Collectors Society, Inc., 2000 West Main St., Suite 300, Red Wing, MN 55066. Write Larry Cox in care of

Lambert Construction Builds Quality Projects
By Robin Martinez© One of the perks to living in Albuquerque is the option of outdoor entertaining year round. Patio covers can help homeowners minimize the impact of summer heat on a home’s outdoor living spaces and allow the homeowner to capture additional outdoor space for holiday entertaining. Lambert Construction can make your patio areas more pleasant and livable with the installation of a customized patio cover. Whether your style is traditional, Southwest, contemporary, or something in between, owner Matt Lambert can create and install a patio cover sure to meet your needs. He can also construct decks, sunrooms and gazebos to further enhance your outdoor spaces. Wood, though a popular choice for patio covers, often results in additional upkeep and maintenance for the homeowner due to New Mexico’s dry climate. For those searching for a low-maintenance solution, Matt suggests a virtually maintenance free, highgrade structural aluminum product offered by Metals USA. The product even has the look of wood, but requires no staining or painting — simply clean by spraying with a water hose. With a selection of colors, styles and end cap options, homeowners are sure to find a style that pleases. And you can feel comfortable knowing that each Metals USA patio cover comes with a limited lifetime warranty and a one-year warranty on the installa-
