Stage 2: Questions.

1.- Is your family aware of contamination problem?

Yes, they are, but they don´t recycled.

2.- Which are the materials you meet use at home and school?
At school I see the following things constantly:
•Bottles plastic
•Pencil
•Juice box
•Notebooks
•Pencil Sharpener

At House I see the following things constantly:

•TV
•Computer
•Bags
•Cutlery
•Washing Machine

3.- How long do the materials sit in landfills?

Batteries: 1000 years.
Plastic bags: take 150 years to biodegrade.
Organic food: 4 weeks.
The paper: takes from 1 year to 2 to completely degrade, since it is basically cellulose.
Disposable diaper: takes up to 500 years.
Disposable propylene: cups take 10 years
4.- Where can we recycle these materials in Santiago?
We can recycle in the following places:

 Plaza La Alcaldesa (Los Leones con California)

 Parque Augusto Errázuriz (Pocuro con Tobalaba)
 Plaza Rio de Janeiro (El Bosque con Pocuro)

5.- What if we recycled these materials?

The contamination would be reduced considerably, however it will take much more
than just recycling to reduce the pollution of the planet completely.

Stage 3.

1.- Awareness:

 The plastic needs around 450 years to begin to decompose. Then, it takes another
50 to 80 years to decompose completely.
 The use of plastic has increased by 100% in the last 50 years.
 40% of the world in landfills are from bottles.
 90% of the price you pay for bottled water is the cost of the plastic.
 More Non-Recyclable than Recyclable bottles are used
 24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce one billion plastic bottles.
 Only 25 recycled bottles are enough to make an adult jacket.
 In Europe, only 2.5% of the plastic bottles they use are recycled.
 150,000 tons enter the water every year, this garbage causes the death of millions
of animals in the oceans, because they confuse plastic with food.
 Each year more than 13 billion plastic benefits are produced, which represents
around 300 bags per person
2.- Idea to reduce waste:
Bring bottles to be filled with water, instead of buying bottled drinks
Use cloth bags
Use metal cutlery
Use glass crockery
Use cloth diapers
Reuse glass containers
Avoid chewing gum
Buy products in boxes and not in plastic bottles

3.- Collection:

 Will your recycling program be collected the recyclables using a team or will you
have drop off spots?
We will put a plastic recycling point next to the Kiosk, some boxes or containers
that we will get or buy (with a cost around $ 20,000), all with the permission of
both the director and the aunts of the Kiosk.

 Who will you include?

To students and teachers to recycle the plastic, and we will take the containers to
an external company to receive the merchandise.

 Who, when and how will you do the sorting?

As we are only going to recycle plastic, we are going to put containers to collect all
the plastic, be it bottles, bags, plastic containers and wrappings, etc. Then we take
this to a recycling company for them to handle.

 How will you outsource the recycling to a contract hauler?

The only external entity to the school will be a company that recycles what we
deposit in the containers, so maybe they will pay us for each certain amount of
plastic waste.

4.- Outcome:

 How the community will be improvised in your project?

The school would be cleaner and would help the whole school community become
aware of recycling, although it is a small advance, it will cause a great change over
time. With this we could save a percentage of the life that suffers and dies because
of the plastic waste for example the fish that die fond of plastic bags. Little by little
we could save the world. Plastic is one of the most polluting materials but also one
of the easiest to reuse.
