Total Point: 135 points
1. (20 pts) This problem deals with the concept of transfer function
The linearized CSTR model can be written in vector-matrix form as follows:

Find the four transfer functions relating the change of inputs ( Tc' ) to the outputs change ( c A' , T’)
and draw block diagram for those two transfer functions.

2. This problem deals with the concept and calculation of dynamic hevaior of 1 st order system
A steam heated stirred tank has the following operating conditions and constant parameters:

Ti  40C , H v  600cal / g , C = 1 cal/(g.°C), w = 104 kg/hr,  = 103 kg/m3, V = 100 m3

The set point of the tank temperature is 150°C.
a. (20 pts) Develop mathematical model for this process and assuming a linear dynamic model in terms of
deviation variables. Develop transfer function for this system.
b. (10 pts) Suppose the steam is operating at the steady state steam flow rate calculated in (a). If the steam rate
is then halved, what will be the new steady state temperature while the input temperature is kept constant?
c. (20 pts) Suppose the steam rate is set to zero; how long does it take to reach T = 95°C? Will the temperature
remain at 95°C once it reaches the new steady state?

3. This problem deals with the concept and calculation of dynamic hevaior of 1 st order system
For a stirred-tank heater, assume the transfer function between the heater input change u(t) (cal/sec) and the
tank temperature change y(t) (°C) can be modeled as

4. (30 pts) This problem deals with feedback control system

Consider this following figure

- Transfer function for reactor system is modeled as:

- Transfer function for control valve is modeled as:

c (s)
 Kv
m ( s)
- Transfer function for measuring element is modeled as:
C 2 (s)
 Km
C 2m (s)
- This system used PID (Proportional, Integral, and Differensial) controller
Determine the block diagram for this reactor control system

5. (5 pts) Please give me suggestions to make this course better and more fun for the next following academic
year, including the way I teach!

go for it or don’t do it at all. I apply that to everything”. Paul Walker..
