The BYU Cougars head into Logan, Utah Friday night to face the Utah State Aggies for a nationally televised ESPN game. This is a non-conference battle of 1-3 teams who have shown signs of playing well this season, but have not been able to put it all together for a complete sixty minutes. BYU has won 10 straight games in this series including last year s 35-17 throttling in Provo. However, the Cougars were 24-point favorites in that game and Utah State is now just a 4.5-point home underdog on the betting line, which shows just how down Brigham Young is this year. The Cougars have outscored the Aggies by an average of 38.8 to 20.1 PPG over the 10-game win streak. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall returned twelve starters from last year s 11-2 squad and started the season off with a 23-17 win over Washington, but the team has since dropped three straight games against some stiff competition. Two of the losses were on the road against Air Force and Florida State. In those two road games they were outgained on average 452 to 250 yards per game. Last week they lost at home to Nevada, 27-13, as a 4.5-point underdog. During the three losses the Cougars have been outscored 96-37. They rank 116th in the nation in scoring offense. They are getting outscored 34.5 to 12 points per game on the road this season. Freshman quarterback Jake Heaps has taken over for Max Hall who is now a backup for the Arizona Cardinals. Heaps has just 489 yards passing while completing just 51.4% of his passes. BYU has gotten a lot of production out of junior running back JJ DiLuigi. He has run for 332 yards on 6.3 yards per carry and is top receiving threat as well as he has caught 18 passes for 200 yards. That s an average of 133 total yards per game. The Aggies come into this game with some optimism. They are a single digit home underdog in this series for the first time this millennium. Gary Andersen returns for his second season as the Utah State coach and has 17 starters back from last year s club. They started the season off with a 31-24 loss at Oklahoma. They played toe to toe with the Sooners, the lone problem in that game was the four turnovers. In their two home games they are averaging 240 yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. The Aggies have gotten great production from three-year starting quarterback Diondre Borel. They will look for this dual-threat QB to make plays for them and to knock off the Cougars for the first time since 1993 when they won in a 58-56 shootout in Provo.
