next-level cool. Amandla Stenberg has
done just that—and then some.
From NAACP Image Award nominations
to a casual cameo in an epic Beyoncé

took herself out of the running for a role in
Marvel’s Black Panther.
“I feel like it would have just been off
to see me, a biracial American, with a
Nigerian accent just pretending that I’m
the same color as everyone else,” she says.
“That was really challenging, to make that
decision, but I have no regrets.”
Amandla—who’s also set to star as Starr
in the Black Lives Matter story, The Hate U
Give—celebrates The Darkest Minds’ diverse
cast. “I don’t think we’ve had a series like
this before where we have a woman of color
as the lead,” Amandla says. “Of the four
main characters, there are two black actors
and a Japanese actor. I think it’s special that
we get to have such an inclusive movie.”
Though the film’s plot might seem far-

“With social media, we have a giant

to utilize it to organize so quickly,” Aman-

for older generations to invalidate the way
we think, but the fact of the matter is with
social media, we can change the world.”
We’ve got a feeling that Amandla is set
to do the same.

3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

Cozi Zuehlsdorff
Will we ever truly understand our moms? Well, probably not—but Ellie
(Cozi Zuehlsdorff, 20) gets inside her mom’s head (literally!) when they swap
bodies in Freaky Friday, Disney Channel’s musical remake of the beloved
switch-up story (Aug. 10). Read on for Cozi’s take on the DCOM’s amaze original
music—and how taking a leap of faith landed her this major role.

She almost didn’t even try out for Ellie.
“Before I auditioned I thought, ‘I should pass because I’m just going to
embarrass myself. I don’t think I’m qualified,’” Cozi recalls. “I was so nervous
in the casting that my knees were shaking. But then I got a callback and
that led to another callback and another callback—and here I am!”

The original Freaky Friday flicks aren’t on her watch list.
“I’d seen the original movie from the ’70s before, but not for a long time,” she
explains. “And I made sure not to watch the 2003 version of the movie with
Lindsay Lohan so that I wouldn’t steal anything from her performance. I wanted
to make our version as original and new as it could be.”

She wrote the movie’s official theme song.
“I’ve been a songwriter for a long time, so when I got the part, I approached
the movie team and said, ‘I wrote some songs for the movie! Take your pick!’
They already had all the music they needed, though, so they said no. But then
they needed a main title track, so I came up with ‘What It’s Like To Be Me,’” she
says. “It’s the most surreal feeling ever to have this dream-come-true role in

The time is meow
By Kelsey Haywood Lucas

I
’ve been a self-identified dog person my entire life—forever falling in
puppy love with pugs and pit bulls and Labs and labradoodles;
frequently freaking out over Frenchies; moved to tears by most mutts.
11 But cats? Hard pass—I never saw the appeal in hairballs and hissing.
That all changed a few months ago when I had the opportunity to 5

Kelsey an a pretty kitty. (And why my boss, Karen—GL’s editor-in-chief—has a camera
roll filled with thousands of almost-identical pictures of her own two
whiskered wonders, Hampden and Harbor.)
Here’s the thing my walk on the wild side made me realize: There’s a
reason that cat-eye liner is so classic (and why the skill it takes to apply it
is so coveted). There’s a reason that leopard print, once garishly glam, is
now a neutral. (No really, tell me something it doesn’t go with. I’ll wait.)
Cats, simply stated, are just so incredibly cool—there’s an undeniable It

Dear Carol
SAD OR DEPRESSED
I’m not depressed, I don’t think, but this summer
I’ve been sad and bored a lot. Help!

Dear Sad or Depressed,
Are you sleeping enough and eating well and getting
exercise? Sometimes a nap or a good night’s sleep is
all it takes to turn a mood around. And enjoy the great
outdoors, whether that means going for a walk or swim or
bike ride. Can you say, “Let’s go for a run?” to a sibling or
neighbor or friend? Do you live near a city? Pretend you’re
a tourist and visit the sights. Can you learn a new skill—
cooking or carpentry or coding? Head to the library and
choose two novels to read this month. Binge-watch a fun
TV series you didn’t have time for during the school year.
Keep a diary or sketchbook. Do volunteer work with kids
or the elderly. Give your closet or room a makeover. Plant
a garden. Go offline for 48 hours. Become an expert on
something. Visit an aunt or relative. In short, shake things
up, reach out to friends and put plans on your calendar.
Oh, and don’t forget the power of upbeat music.

Tejal isn’t a paranoid person: She
is just reacting to the terrifying trend
of mass school shootings. She worries
that her school might be next—and
that she could be a victim.
“After the Parkland shooting,

she says of the shooting at Marjory

stresses that the anxiety shouldn’t
interfere with your life in a way that

whether your anxiety is mild or off the

counselor you trust and tell them your
concerns. While they can’t actually
prevent anything from happening,
they can help you feel better and more
secure on a day-to-day basis.

KNOW THE PLAN
Most schools are required to have a
strict protocol for a shooting inci-
dent. The problem? Many students
don’t always know what that plan
involves—or, if they do, they don’t pay
close enough attention to actually
execute it in an actual emergency.
“We do lockdown drills, but we
don’t do enough to actually make us
feel safer,” says Ariana S., 12. “I think
we should take it more seriously and
talk about the topic more so that we
know what’s going on.”
