designed to minimize the “Safe” and “Touch” potential within acceptable
5.8 Lighting:-
The power plant lighting , following normal practice, will comprise of
interior and exterior lights as appropriate. While the majority of the illuminaries

5.9 Switch yard and Switching Scheme:-
The project is proposed to be interfaced with the 400/220 kV Jangi pooling
point and 400 kV pooling point near Wangtoo. The evacuation arrangement has
been made after taking in to consideration the constraints on right of way,
reliability and the quantum of power that shall be injected in to Jangi pooling
point. On river Satluj, up stream of Thopan Powari HEP, a number of projects
with an aggregate generating potential of about 2300 MW have been identified,
though actual generating potential shall be determined after detailed
investigations are over. Schematic diagram showing the interconnection of these

D:\Himachal\Thopan Powari\THOPAN-POWARI HEP(480 MW)\Thopan Powari.doc

projects with each other is as per Annex. A. These projects shall run in
tandem i.e. each project shall be dependent on its immediate up stream project
for generation. Since the generation is in serial mode and the sufficient
transmission corridor is not available for laying individual transmission lines to
the grid, the evacuation of power from these projects shall also be in serial mode
i.e. each project shall feed its power in to its immediate down stream projects. In
order to evacuate this large chunk of power beyond Thopan Powari, ample
margin in the 400 kV switchgear at Thopan Powari has been kept which is
capable of handling the power likely to be injected in to Thopan Powari after
the commissioning of up stream power projects. Due to space constraints, 400
kV Gas Insulated Switchgear has been proposed and shall be housed on a floor
located just above the transformers in the transformer cavern. Single breaker
double bus bar arrangement has been proposed after giving due consideration to
its reliability, stability, easy maintenance and accessibility. The GIS switchyard
has 3 generator transformer bays, one bus coupler bay and four feeder bays. The
connection of the Pot yard with the underground GIS switchyards shall be made
via 400 kV, 4000 A GI ducts which shall be routed through separate bus duct
tunnel i.e. one for 2 Nos. 400 kV outgoing circuits and other for 2 Nos. 400 kV
circuits for up stream projects. Capacity of GI ducts has again been kept on
higher size for the reasons stated above.
6. Transmission of Power:-
Considering the amount of power to be evacuated and the distance
involved, it has been proposed to inject the power generated at Thopan Powari
power house in to 400 kV pooling point near Wangtoo. The proposed 400 kV
Pooling Point near Wangtoo shall be created by LILO of 400 kV Wangtoo-
Abdullapur line. For wheeling of power that shall be accumulated at this
pooling point, adequate number of feeders or HVDC link shall be established
between this pooling point and Northern Grid depending upon over all
evacuation requirement. The power from Thopan Powari HEP shall also form
part of this accumulated power.
7. Establishment:-
The electrical works of the project are proposed to be completed with
in 5 years time. Accordingly, the provision of regular establishment required for
to do electrical works in this time frame has been made in the estimate. The
design procurement, inspection, erection and commissioning of electrical works
of the project shall be done departmentally.
The provision of staff has been made as per the CEA’s norms
intimated from time to time.
