MAKING DISCIPLES

Richard Chamberlain
THE GREAT
COMMISSION

Matthew 28:18-20
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the
mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And
when they saw him they worshiped him, but some
doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you. And behold,
I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

What did the eleven
understand this to mean,
what did they do?
How does the church you
attend, understand and act
upon this command?
How do you understand this
command. What have you
done to obey it?
If we copy the example of
Jesus we are likely to
produce disciples like he
wants.
This course looks at the
example of Jesus.
- Jesus took people with
normal lives and made
them the basis in his plan
to change the world.
Peter, Andrew, James, and John were
fisherman (Matt 4:18-22; Mk 1:16-20; Lk
5:1-11).
Matthew was a tax-collector (Matthew
10:3).
The jobs of the rest are unknown.
The Cost of Being a Disciple
Luke 14:25-35 (NIV)
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning
to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does
not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers
and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person
cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry
their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower.
Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to
see if you have enough money to complete it? 29
For if you lay the foundation and are not able to
finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30
saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able
to finish.’
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against
another king.Won’t he first sit down and consider
whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose
the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32
If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the
other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of
peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not
give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
Write your own [brief]
definition of what a
disciple is.

THE BASICS OF BEING A
DISCIPLE.
A DISCIPLE…
1. Follows Jesus and puts him first in
everything
2. A disciple…Lives their life by the
Word of God.
Do you know it?
Do you obey it?
2. A disciple…Lives their life by the
Word of God.

The Word of God refines
and purifies our life:
thoughts, attitudes and
actions will be changed.
3. Produces fruit
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine,
neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the
vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in
me and I in him, he it is that bears much
fruit, for apart from me you can do
nothing.
John 15
4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.
No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must
remain in the vine. Neither can you bear
fruit unless you remain in me.
5 ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If
you remain in me and I in you, you will
bear much fruit; apart from me you can
do nothing.
5 ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If
you remain in me and I in you, you will
bear much fruit; apart from me you can
do nothing.
What would spiritual fruit
look like?
• FRUIT OF HS
• OBEDIENCE
• LOVE FOR GOD
• FELLOWSHIP OF HOLY SPIRIT
• GOOD RELATIONSHIPS…ETC.

The Greek word for this love is ‘agape’ =
Selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love

For if you forgive other people when they
sin against you, your heavenly Father will
also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive
others their sins, your Father will not forgive

5. Disciples…share in His sufferings,
and also share in His glory
Even when obedience proves costly, you will not
be the loser, for God will always give back far
more than is given to Him; both in this life and
eternally in heaven (Luke 6:38; John 10:10).
Romans 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are
heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if
indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we
may also share in his glory.

TO CONCLUDE…
Disciples seek first the Kingdom of God and His
righteousness.
You can be confident that God will keep His
promise and provide for your every need, as He
did with Jesus (Matthew 6:33).
