‘CAMBODIA During a land dispute in northeastern Cambodia, soldiers attacked innocent villagers after
the villagers were forced off their land that they have occupied for years. Witnesses are sharing videos
of the carnage on social media, but authorities are continuing to deny the deaths and injuries. While
some news coverage has downplayed or published denials of killings, multiole reports indicate thatet
least six people have died asa result of the police attacks aiid dozens more are injured.
“We condemn the brutality of Cambodian authorities and demand an immediate and independent
investigation of this attack. Villagers who were detained should be released immediately and protection
should be provided to witriesses in order to ensure a fair examination of the situation,” said Mu Sochua,
Deputy President of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
“This attack further erodes the deteriorating rule of law in Cambodia and prohibits Cambodians from
living peacefully on their tand as they have for years before authorities unjustly rip it out from under
them, uprooting and displacing them. Authorities misst return the land to the villagers and end this
culture of impunity.”
‘Nearly 200 villagers in Kratie have been forced off their land as the Cambodian government has granted
itto a concessionaire to develop into a rubber plantation, which according to CNRP sources belongs to
Prime Minister Hun Sen's daughter.
This brutal attack comes ata tire when the Cambodian government is facing criticism within Cambodia
and globally for political intimidation, corruption, systemic dismantling of the judicial process, and a
dangerous turn toward dictatorship. Recently, the United States cut ald to Cambodia because of the
increasing anti-democratic actions and Australia called out Prime Minister Hun Sen for his threats to
