  • 1. Scope This specification details the design, construction, two winding transformer and testing of Dry Type Cast Resin Distribution Transformers ranging from 15 to 500 kVA of both the general purpose type and K-factor rated for non-linear loads. This document is mainly based on lEC Standards and was created by conversion and modification of the SABIC Engineering Standards (SES) that are ANSI/IEEE based.

  • 3.3 Unless otherwise noted, these units shall be utilized with a primary supply voltage not to exceed 34.5 kV, 60 Hz, single or three phase and shall be self-cooled. Data sheet SES IEC-E04-X02 shall be completed by all parties as required for each transformer and submitted as part of the final documentation.

  • 3.4 Any conflict(s) between this specification, SES and industry standards, engineering drawings, and contract documents shall be resolved at the discretion of SABIC. When resolving any conflict, the following order of precedence shall apply:

    • a. Purchase Order

    • b. Data Sheet

    • c. Referenced Document(s)

  • 4. Service Conditions

    • 4.1 Transformers shall be designed to operate continuously and intermittently.

    • 4.2 Transformers for outdoor applications shall be designed to operate outdoors in an atmosphere typical of industrial facilities including petrochemical plants. Plants may be located in coastal and desert areas with fine blown dust conditions.

    • 4.3 Transformers shall be designed to operate in an ambient temperature of 1 to 50 °C.

    • 4.4 Design temperature of the ambient air for any 24 hour period shall be 50 °C and metallic surface temperature due to solar radiation shall be 90 °C.

    • 4.5 Transformers shall be able to be energized without damage at maximum and minimum ambient temperatures as specified in 4.3.

    • 4.6 Maximum design altitude shall be below 1000 meters, unless otherwise shown on data sheets.

    • 4.7 Relative humidity is 1 to 95 percent non-condensing.

    • 4.8 Seismic conditions, UBC Zone 1, unless otherwise shown on data sheet SES IEC-E04- X02.

  • 5. Unit Construction

    • 5.1 Transformers shall conform to IEC 60076-11 and rated from 15 kVA to 500 kVA.

    • 5.2 Transformers for indoor use shall be ventilated dry type with a 220 °C insulation system. The insulation levels and dielectric capabilities shall be in accordance with IEC 60076-3 and IEC 60076-11 section 12.

    • 5.3 Transformers for outdoor use in both classified and unclassified areas shall be non- ventilated up to the limits available from the manufacturer. Above this limit they shall be ventilated and protected from the environment with weather shield kits.

    • 5.4 Units shall be designed to operate with a rated maximum temperature rise of 150 °C.

    • 5.5 Unless otherwise specified, electrical conductor shall be made of electrolytic copper, with conductivity 98% IACS and arranged to brace coil layers and provide maximum ventilation. Aluminum windings shall be provided with conductivity 61% IACS, if specified on data sheets, SES IEC-E04-X02.

    • 5.6 Core laminations shall be tightly assembled. The complete core and coil assembly shall be vacuum impregnated with a non-hygroscopic thermo-setting varnish.

    • 5.7 Core and coil assemblies shall be constructed to provide thermal, mechanical and magnetic short circuit withstand capabilities.

    • 5.8 The core and coil assembly shall be installed on vibration dampening pads and securely bolted to the enclosure base.

    • 5.9 Grounding shall be in accordance with IEC 60076-11 section 32 and IEC 60364-5-54.

      • 5.10 On neutral grounded wye system, the neutral shall be grounded at the supply transformer neutral bushing.

    • 5.12 Unless otherwise specified, finish coat shall have a nonmetallic pigment surface. Color of finish coat shall be light gray RAL 7035 in accordance to RAL Institute Basic Collection RAL 840-HR / RAL 841-GL and covered with an epoxy coat for protection against environmental conditions.

    • 5.13 Terminals shall be sized to carry 125 percent of the transformers full load current. Transformers above 600 V shall have two separate terminal compartments for high voltage and low voltage terminals.

    • 5.14 Transformers shall be approved for use in the zone classification they are to be installed in. The majority of these transformers will probably be located in Group II, Zone 2 areas. Wherever possible they shall be installed in unclassified areas.

    • 5.15 Units installed outdoors shall have a IP55 outdoor enclosure.

    • 5.16 The enclosure shall be mechanically isolated from the transformer.

    • 5.17 Corrosion resistant wall mounting brackets and fasteners shall be installed where specified.

    • 6. K-Factor Rated Transformers

      • 6.1 When transformers are to serve non-linear loads they shall be K-Factor rated.

      • 6.2 The K-Factor is the ratio between the additional losses due to harmonics and the eddy current losses at 60 Hz.

      • 6.3 Non-linear rated transformers shall be suitable for non-sinusoidal loads and harmonic distortion as required in ANSI/IEEE C57.110.

      • 6.4 Non-linear rated transformers shall be UL listed and shall bear the UL marking on its nameplate along with the specific K-Factor rating or equal.

      • 6.5 The transformers shall be designed with and labeled for one of the following K-Factor rating designations:

    K4 for 50 percent non-linear load K13 for 100 percent non-linear load K20 for 150 percent non-linear load K30 for 200 percent non-linear load

    • 6.6 The core of K-Factor rated transformers shall be designed to withstand voltage distortion and high frequency harmonic currents.

    • 6.7 The core shall be magnetic flux density.

    • 6.8 Primary and secondary windings shall be designed to minimize stray losses, skin effect losses and excessive heating from harmonic currents.

    • 6.9 Coils shall not exceed the specified winding temperature rise, the corresponding hot spot temperature rating or the 220 °C insulation rating while carrying the specified non- linear load.

      • 6.10 The neutral bus for single phase, 3 wire or 3 phase, 4 wire shall be sized for 200 percent of rated current.

      • 6.11 An electrostatic shield shall be provided between the primary and secondary windings and grounded to a common point within the transformer enclosure.

      • 6.12 K-Factor rating is not described in the IEC. General information for measurement and calculation of transformer losses are given in IEC 60076-1 and IEC 60076-8.

    • 7.1.2 Unless otherwise specified on data sheets standard voltage ratings shall be supplied. The primary voltage shall not exceed 34.5 kV, with secondary voltage to be one of the following:

      • a. 120 V, 240 V single phase 3 wire

      • b. 208 Y / 120 V three phase 4 wire

      • c. 480 Y / 277 V three phase 4 wire

  • 7.1.3 Unless otherwise specified, four full-capacity, off-load taps, two 21/2 percent above nominal and two 21/2 percent below nominal shall be provided on the high voltage winding.

    • 7.2 Sound Levels

    Unless otherwise specified, transformer sound levels shall conform to IEC 60076-10 and IEC 60076-10-1 as follows:

    10 to 50 kVA

    • 45 dB

    51 to 150 kVA

    Inspection

     
    • 9.1 Vendor shall have a quality control program which will be monitored by SABIC. Vendor shall also be responsible for quality control of all the work done by a subcontractor.

    • 9.2 Inspection procedures and reviews shall be defined by specific project requirements, which are part of the purchase order.

    • 9.3 Inspection will be at the discretion of SABIC.

    • 9.4 When specified, vendor shall arrange for an inspection by SABIC.

    • 9.5 The vendor shall provide to SABIC, at the time of inspection, a complete set of the approved drawings of the equipment, quality control procedures and results of tests carried out on the transformers in accordance with the purchase order.

    • 9.6 When major components or services are obtained from sub-suppliers, SABIC representative shall be notified and given the option of inspection manufacture.

    • 9.7 It is the responsibility of the prime supplier to include SABIC inspection requirements in suborders and to arrange for approval drawings of the equipment to be available to SABIC during inspections at the sub-supplier’s location.

    • 9.8 Additional inspections of equipment by SABIC do not relieve the supplier or sub- supplier of the responsibility for meeting the requirements of the specification.

    • 9.9 SABIC approval and release shall be required prior to shipment.

    • 10. Terminal Marking Terminal designations shall be as defined by IEC/TR 60616 with each terminal clearly marked with oil resistant yellow paint. The identification of terminal connections shall be shown on the instruction nameplate.

    • 11. Testing

      • 11.1 Transformers shall be tested in accordance with IEC 60076-11 and IEC 60076-1 and applicable industry standards. Unless otherwise specified, the following tests shall be required. Prior to shipping, SABIC shall receive certified copies of the test results.

        • (a) Ratio: Rated voltage and all taps

        • (b) Excitation loss at rated voltage and nameplate connection

    • (c) Resistance: On all windings and at all tap positions

    • (d) Polarity and phase relations

    • (e) Excitation current at rated voltage and at nameplate connection

    • (f) Load loss and impedance corrected to nameplate connected rated voltage and rated temperature rise, at 50 °C ambient and rated kVA

    • (g) Sound level testing

    • (h) Temperature rise of each winding

    • (i) Dielectric: Applied potential, at power frequency, for each winding to all other windings, the core and the enclosure or frame

    • (j) Dielectric: Induced potential

    • (k) Dielectric: Partial discharge, coils less than 1.2 kV

    • (l) Dielectric: Impulse

    • (m) Insulation Resistance: Each winding to ground and from winding to winding using a megger type tester, or as required

    • (n) Short circuit

    • (o) Full load and impartial

    • 12. Transformer Accessories

      • 12.1 Each transformer shall be equipped with all vendor’s normally furnished standard accessories.

      • 12.2 If surge arresters are specified on data sheet, they shall be mounted to allow for ready disconnection (without removal) to permit independent testing of transformer and arresters.

      • 12.3 Unless otherwise specified on data sheet, 3 phase hot spot temperature indicators shall be provided on transformers 300 kVA and 500 kVA.

  • 13. Shipping

    • 13.1 Vendor shall submit a description of preparation for shipping for SABIC approval. Vendor shall be responsible for the preparation for shipment and ensuring that the transformer reaches SABIC destination in satisfactory condition.

    • 13.2 Nameplates shall be made of stainless steel securely fastened at eye level height to the front of the transformer enclosure with stainless steel screws and shall conform to IEC 60076-11, section 9.1. As a minimum the nameplate shall include the following:

      • a. Complete electrical data

      • b. Wiring Diagram

      • c. Tap Connections

      • d. Manufacturer's Name

      • e. Catalog Number

      • f. Mfg. Serial No.

      • g. Date of Manufacture

      • h. Impedance

      • i. Weight

      • j. Ambient Temperature

      • k. Vector Group

  • 13.3 Document requirements shall be listed in the purchase specification.

    • 13.4 The purchase order number and the equipment item number shall be included on all equipment drawings.

    • 13.5 Certified outline drawings for the transformer and enclosure shall include:

    (i)

    (ii) Overall dimensions, arrangement and location of magnetic insulating materials

    (iii)

    Equipment

    weights

    and

    any

    special

    foundation

    or

    mounting

    • 13.6 Overall price, descriptive information, drawing and delivery schedule shall be included on the procurement documents.

    • 13.7 Installation, maintenance and operating instructions shall be included and shipped with the transformer.
