1. Report Abstract

In today’s business world, it can be stated with absolute certainty that Smart

Technology has rapidly improved the productivity, profitability, customer

satisfaction and loyalty. However, if used inappropriately, it risks the security,

privacy legality and reputation of the organization as well as the customers. This

report analyses the socioeconomic impact of Smart Technology by attempting to

evaluate four randomly selected products in smart technology category in the CES

website1 .The four products being examined are Vivint Doorbell Camera, Sumitomo

Smallest Wireless charging Module, Connected mirror by Haier and Bosch Smart

Water Heater.

Through this report, we have aimed at giving an unbiased opinion of the Smart

Technology2 products by analyzing both the positive as well as negative impact it

creates on the society and the economy. The methods used to gather information is

not restricted to the qualitative research on the product from the product website,

research articles and blogs. The study is restricted to the socio economic analysis3

only and does not cover technological implication of the products or its category.

2. Products

2.1Vivint Doorbell Camera4 (Anh Le)

2.1.1About the product

This product will assist people to keep track their house whenever and wherever they

are. Here are the main features: 2-Way Talk, 1-Way Video, Night Vision, Custom

Notifications, Wide-angle Lens and Smart Visitor Detection.

2.1.2Social Impacts

a)Positive

People will find it more confident when they are away from their house for a long

time (business trip, vacation or travel). They can always check what is happening in

front of the door through their smartphones. For example, when you are on the

vacation with your family, you can’t predict who might show up unannounced, or

when. With a discreet camera built into your doorbell, it won’t matter. Smart motion

detection notifies you when someone approaches, therefore you’ll be notified they’re

outside before they ever ring. You’ll also know even if they knock.

This product will help to detect suspicious behaviors in front of the door. Since,

it will exert an impact on restraining the would-be criminals, who tend to commit

the crime, particularly the burglars. Consequently, it will definitely lead to the better

and safer social. For example, if a person is going to intrude someone’s house

illegally burglary and they also knew that there are many people who are arrested,

thanks to this product’s detection, they will certainly think twice before

housebreaking.

b) Negative

Nonetheless, nothing is perfect, this product, of course, is not the exception. For

example, if there is major error or bug which is not detected by the company, this

would be the opportunity for high-tech criminals, who want to invade other houses

illegally.

2.1.3 Economic Impacts

A) Positive

This product will also affect the economy of the country. For example, the nation

which is fewer offenders will result in the strong economy and happy society. The

residents of that country will desire to stay in and contribute to their country. By

contrast, if the citizens find it hazardous to stay in their country, they will surely

leave it to find another secured place to live. This will bring about the brain drain

phenomenon, which is detrimental for the economic climate of that country.

Furthermore, the house owners will also save a handsome amount of money by

saving cost, thanks to this product. For instance, when there are relatives visiting

your house, you do not need to ask the boss to leave the work or important meeting

to go back home and open the door. You can unlock your front door, open your

garage, and turn on lights via smartphone

B) Negative

When this product does not function as its expectation, there will be more high-

tech criminals involving in, which result in the rising trend of dangerous offenders.

Not only victims of those kinds of unlawful action will certainly lose the huge

money, but their productivity of work will be affected as well. Consequently, this

will adversely impact economic growth.

2.2 Sumitomo Smallest Wireless charging Module5 (Sean Justine)

2.2.1 About the product:

This product will enable codeless charging6 for products such as healthcare devices

and industrial equipment’s. The main features are Ultra small & slim Receiving

Antenna and Built-in Temperature Monitor for Safety. It is Supplied as Modules for

Receiving Antenna (RX) and Transmitting Antenna(TX)

2.2.2 Socio-economic impact:

A) Positive:

o Society: Cost of existing wired devices gets reduced since wires are

completely avoided. Additionally, it is very easy to handle

o Organization: Products become more efficient, it can reduce space

especially in the industrial environment.

o Economy: New organizations can develop this technology thereby adding

more jobs to the market.

o Demographic: Easy for old people to charge their devises ; they need not

worry about cables

o Education: Opens the scope for further research in wireless technology

o Government: The government can get more taxes from such high -tech

products

o Environment: Reducing toxic waste of wires and metals.

B) Negative:

o Health: Radiations can lead to diseases like cancer

2.3 Connected mirror by Haier7 (Gurpinderjeet)

2.3.1 About product

This is a touch enabled smart mirror which enable to get connected online. It works

just like a smart phone. The main features are 1080P HD screen, 16 millions of color

resolution, a 23.6-inch display, 2GB memory, 8GB storage and runs on Android 5.0.

2.3.2Socio-economic impact:

A) Positive:

o Society: It saves time by helping to always get connected, even in their

washroom.

o Organization: A break during a Project meet will not get a team member devoid

of information. He will get information even in washroom

o Economy: This can be a growing market by reshaping companies & competition.

o Demographic: Very helpful for old people

o Education: Students can learn by reading newspaper study materials and videos

o Government: The government can get more tax with this new product.

o Environment: It helps in the conservation of energy

B) Negative:

o Privacy: Privacy can be compromised while using this device

2.4 Bosch Smart Water Heater8 (Greentherm 9000ise) (Kola Oguntuase)

2.4.1 About product

The new smart water heaters will allow consumers to remotely activate or deactivate
the device using a smartphone or tablet via an internet connection. The main features
are Integrated Wi-Fi control, integrated sensor technology and top mounted water
connection

2.4.2 Socio economic impact:

A) Positive:

o Temperature control; because of this feature, optimum temperature is usually

attained.

o Remote activation; if away for a long period, the heater can be turned on

remotely thereby providing heated water on arrival.

o Safety; because the device is remotely activated, it can be turned off and then

turned on only when required as convenient.

o Cost savings; if the heater does not reach higher temperatures, less energy is

consumed. Coupled with the ability to activate it only when needed rather than

it being turned on at regular (or random) intervals, this ensures significant

savings on energy costs.

B) Negative:

o An overreliance on the remote feature could lead to not turning off the device

completely. Due to the residual power, possibly still in the circuit, the device

will likely continue to consume energy.

o Terrorism: Because the device is connected to the home network, it exposes the

dwellers to remote hacking which could be used for ill-advised purposes, one of

which is extreme heat and possible explosion

3. Terms & Glossary

Antenna: A device which converts electricity to radio waves

Color resolution: The amount of color detail or pixels a camera can capture

Integrated: A system where various parts are linked together.

Modules: A set or collection of parts with specific properties which can be combined

to become a larger unit

Night Vision: The ability to see at night or in low light conditions.

Radiations: The transmission of energy through space or matter in the form of

waves produced by unstable atoms

Sensor technology: A technology which uses sensors to detect changes in

environment and sends appropriate information/messages to other devices

Socio Economic Analysis: The study and research on the social and economic

properties of a product or a system.

Smart Visitor Detection: A technique by which a visitor is detected each time the

person passes though the sensor.

Wide-angle Lens: A lens which allows more images to be included in the picture.

This is achieved by reducing the focal length of the lens.
