Drill pad Construction

Mud tanks and mud disposal

Firstly the cuttings shall be collected right next to and below the mud tanks. A canal, pit, ditch or a hole
for the cuttings is therefore needed to accumulate the cuttings that allow easy access for excavator and
a load truck for collection. The elevation of this pit is very important; it must be low enough for the
cuttings to run freely from the shakers and into it. Consequently the mud or water must run freely into
the mud pond so the elevation of the top of the pond must be lower than the bottom of the mud tanks
plus some additional height allowing some degree of slope for the water to run the right way in the canal
to the mud pond. A pipe can be installed in the canal and filling material put on top allowing traffic to
pass through or just a regular canal pit

Here are some pictures and ideas of how this can be addressed:

In pad B in the Philippines a

container serves the purpose
of a cutting pond. The top of
the container is in the same
height as the bottom of the
mud tanks. This allows the
cuttings to fall freely from the
shakers into the container and
the cuttings are then easily
removed with an excavator.

The drilling fluid (with
cuttings) finds its way past the
container and down its way to
the mud pit.

Here the drilling fluid is entering the mud pit. The mud pit is at least
2.5m below the bottom of the mud tanks to allow the water to run
without any trouble to the pit

pad E in the Filippines. The
height diffrence is here 5.5m
from the top of the pit to the
elevation of the drill pad it self
as seen on the drawing below.

Construction of the cellar and installation of a conductor and a mouse
hole
Please review the requirements regarding cellar dimensions.

One way of construct the cellar and install a conductor and a mouse hole is to follow these steps:

1. Cellar dimensions
The cellar is concreted
and brought to site,
either with no bottom
or sufficient gap for
the two pipes. This
cellar is
3380x2900x1700mm,
thickness of the cellar
walls are 195-210mm

2. Position of mousehole with regards to cellar/well location

The conductor and the mouse hole can be

fastened together with correct distance (130
or 135cm) using steel beams or rods or
equivalent. By doing this the distance can be
checked before installed and eliminates the
risk of the conductor and the mousehole pipe
to go out of place during installation.

3. Plug cementing of conductor and mousehole

The conductor and mouse

hole shall be bottom plugged
cemented in place preferably
into a hard rock. By doing that
the drilling fluid has less
change of escaping along the
outside of the conductor and
up and it also gives much
more stability during the
drilling operation.

4. Filling material and cementing & Height of cellar

Sufficient filling material is put

on the top of the cement plug
and sewage system installed.
Then the cellar is put on top,
dimensions checked and the
bottom part of the cellar is
cemented in place so correct
height dimensions is reached
(1200mm) and both pipes are
securely fastened both at the
top and bottom.

Drainage system
The importance of a good drain system is essential - Especially in places where heavy rain can affect
operation. The geotextile fabric layer underneath the compacted layer is a good way to drain the drill
pad. Note that the area underneath and around the cellar is the most important as the biggest portion of
the rigs load is on that area therefore it must not be possible for water to accumulate under it and
especially not escape under the fabric along the conductor. According to the drawings the design could
let to this problem to occur. It is therefore suggested this will be reviewed with these things in mind. By
laying the textile fabric layer on top of the compacted layer, leaning away from the cellar might solve this
problem.

Cellars are usually equipped with a simple drain system. The easiest way of draining the cellars is to
connect a pipe that drains directly through a bottom of the cellar to the mud pit.

The drain system on the drill pad is also very important and worth taking special care in designing it.
