Honor Jesus, For Reals!

Mark 7:1 - 7

Do you remember who the Pharisees and

scribes were? They were people in Jesus’s
time who helped people remember and follow
God’s rules. Well, one day some of the
Pharisees and scribes saw that some of
Jesus’s disciples were eating, but they had
broken one of the old, important rules.

That rule was to clean your hands in a special

way before eating. The scribes and the
Pharisees and all the Jews didn’t eat unless
they had COMPLETELY clean hands and the
food from the market was clean.

That seems like a good idea, right? We know

a lot about germs and diseases and people
who get sick, so I’ll bet you try to eat clean
food, too.

Well, Jesus told those scribes and Pharisees that they were worried about the
wrong thing. He said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are
far from me. They worship me, teaching human rules as doctrines.”

Say what?

Did that mean the people weren’t supposed to have clean hands and food?

Guess again. Doctrines are VERY important laws or rules that help us
understand what we believe and how to live. But, sometimes, we seem to make
up rules that we think are more important than the people who follow them.

Like this…

Is it more important for people to wash, wash, wash as if they’re going into
surgery?

Or…

Let them eat quickly, if the food and their hands are clean enough and they’re
really, really hungry?
