Why We’re Here:

Welcome to World History, the foundational course in the Social Studies Department at South Brunswick High
School. This semester we will focus on three central and enduring concepts to the history of the world:
Innovation, Conflict, and Exchange. To provide a sturdy foundation for future social studies courses and
develop life long learning skills, students will practice Habits of a Historian such as document analysis,
understanding cause and effect, and evaluating the significance of historial events. Students should expect to
think independently, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively over the course of the semester through
reading, speaking, and writing about world history.

What You Need:

3-ring binder (1 ½ - 2 inch recommended) with loose-leaf notebook paper
Pencils/Pens
Access to Mrs. Bryan’s Webpage - www.worldwithbryan.weebly.com
Headphones
*Dry Erase Marker/Eraser - optional, but encouraged

Making the Grade:

Types of Assignment Percentage What it includes:
Assessments 50% Unit Tests
Classwork 40% Coursepacks, quizzes
Homework 10% Homework

Coursepacks
You will be provided with coursepacks throughout the semester that are to be kept in your 3 ring binder. You
may receive some additional hand-outs, but the majority of the course material will be in the coursepacks. I
will check coursepacks frequently to see that homework assignments are completed and provide students
feedback on areas of improvement. When a unit in the coursepack is completed, coursepacks will be collected
and unit assignments will be graded holistically using the following rubric.
✓+ = Exemplary effort (100) Assignment was completed with great detail and demonstrates critical
thinking. The student put significant effort into the assignment.
✓ = Satisfactory effort (80) Assignment was completed but lacked some detail and demonstration of
critical thinking. The student put some effort into the assignment.
✓ - = Unsatisfactory effort (60) Assignment completed with little to no detail or was partially
completed. The assignment displayed no critical thinking. The student put little effort into completing the
assignment.
0 = no effort. Assignment was not attempted or was plaigirized.

Late Assignments and Make-Up Work:

In the event of an absence, students should check the class website and calendar for any missed
assignments. Upon returning to class, students should check their classroom portfolios for any missed
hand-outs. Students will have three days to submit any missed work, however any assignments with
previously established due dates are expected to be turned in upon a student’s return to class (unless prior
arrangements are made with the teacher). If a student misses a test, quiz, or in-class writing assignment, the
student is responsible for scheduling and completing the make up assessment. If you know you will be absent
or have any questions regarding this policy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Video and Movie Permission:

The topic of history is filled with revolutions, great changes, and unfortunately numerous tragic and violent
events. There will be times in this class where we watch film clips that may contain images and information that
are graphic and/or difficult to watch. Some of these clips are from films rated R (for example, the first 12
minutes of Saving Private Ryan). I carefully consider the educational value of each film or clip shown in my
classroom. You must sign below if you DO NOT want your child to watch said clips:
