Dissertation
“Composition and the New Science: Chaos, Expressionism, and Social-Epistemic Rhetoric.” This study offers a historical view of Rhetoric and Composition, a field that emerged with a particular interest in the roles of chaos in writing processes. The study argues that shifting scientific epistemologies regarding chaos have resonated across disciplines and within our work. Expressionist rhetorics have embraced the notion of chaos as a valuable aspect of writing, as the domain from which writing emerges. Similarly, social epistemic rhetorics have shown that the development of effective written texts is a chaotic process conceived of as more complex than ever before. This study concludes that chaos theory resonates within both expressionist and social epistemic rhetorics, agreeing with some contemporary scholars who find value in working between/among the rigidity taxonomies, particularly as we complicate “expressionist” and “social-epistemic” rhetorics. Moxley (Rhetoric and Composition) Committee Members: rofessor Laurence Broer (Post-WWII American Literature) P Professor Silvio Gaggi (Postmodern Theory) Professor Elizabeth Hirsch (Critical Theory) Professor Philip Sipiora (Classical Rhetoric)
