READING

INTERMEDIATE

Exercise 1. Top Ten cliches.

- I spend half of my life reading books.

- Fantasy books, science fiction, detective storie (or whodunnits), short stories and poems help you to

create a world of your own, a world outside time.

- However, I would say that factual books (su ch a s t e xt b oo ks a t scho o ls, en cyclop a ed ia s ,

d ict ion a rie s , gu ide b oo ks , b io g rap h ie s , Wh o 's Who ) help you to form a picture of the world

around you, and they are an excellent way of communicating lots of information.

- I suppose everybody would agree that reading is really important, as you learn to visualise things,

and it helps you to expand your horizons, to learn to use your imagination, and it is an efficient way of

expanding your knowledge as well.

- Reading a book can open up your mind and even help you to think in a different way.

- By reading books you'll learn to visualise things in your own way.

- Unfortunately, reading is getting less and less popular, mostly because of the increasing influence

of TV.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- My favourite writer is ..............., he writes in a very unique style, however, his new book was a

disappointment.

- I would say I'm a bookworm.

- The book I last read was a real eye-opener.
