Poka-Yoke

Poka Yoke 1:

Car and House Key in the same key ring:

Generally when we work in a Tier I city, life is so fast that we often forget things.
Imagine a scenario where you are rushing for office at 8 am in the morning and
your house in on 10th floor in Mumbai or even a 3rd floor if there is no elevator
going and you forget your car keys! How frustrating that sounds! This is what we
experienced in our own lives while working in Delhi and Hyderabad. So the
Poka-Yoke, which we found is actually very simple- Put car keys and House keys
in the same key ring.

Limitations of this Poka- Yoke:

1) In case the key-ring is lost, both the keys will be lost.
2) The second Poka-Yoke is a bit far fetched but if the key-ring is stolen the
thief will have the car key as well as house key.

However, the second Poka Yoke can be ignored because in the rare circumstance
if somebody is stealing the car, he cannot at the same time steal from the house
too. There will be ample time to take action on that .

Poka Yoke 2:

Use of Fluorescent tape:

The room layout in GMP hostel is like this:

It can be noticed that the switch for a bulb or a tube-light is just besides the
bathroom. Sometimes, it so happens during the night that if the washroom needs
to be visited, there is a risk of getting stumbled upon chair on the way and
injures oneself. To overcome this risk, a fluorescent tape is put on the chair so
that in the night, it’s clearly seen and can be avoided. Therefore, the room in the
night looks like this:
The idea of the fluorescent tape came from the shop floor where sometimes it is
used for marking the way.

Limitations:
1) No specific limitation except the fact that mind fails to correlate the tape
with the chair.
2) Ignoring the tape also may become a limitation for an unaware mind.

Extension of this Poke Yoke:

1) For marking the path in the house for old people.

2) For putting labels on torch in case of a power cut
3) For putting labels otherwise for utility purpose.
4) Can be even put on a carry bag or something if walking in the night
without streetlights, so that it is visible to vehicles from far that a person
might be moving.
