1. Technician verifies the customer complaint and checks for any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB’S) and/or software updates that pertain to the symptoms(s). Note: This issue may be a known pattern failure that has been addressed by the factory engineers who have compiled a specific repair procedure that involves updated parts and/or software. Complaint Verified: Yes ______No: _______Bulletins:_________________________________ 2. Technician records all stored Powertrain Control Module diagnostic codes PCM Codes: ___________________________________________________________________ In addition to retrieving the diagnostic code(s) the technician performs a complete systems scan of all the vehicle computers to determine if other computer systems are being influenced by the vacuum leak. Example: A vacuum leak could effect engine performance to the point where it could interfere with the proper operation of the transmission and climate control system. Other Vehicle Codes: ____________________________________________________________ 3. Technician documents all of the Freeze Frame Information for all of the stored codes. Note: Freeze Frame is a data 'movie', very much like an aircraft ‘in flight’ recorder, that saves the Power Train operating conditions when the Check Engine or other system code was triggered. Freeze Frame Data: _____________________________________________________________ 4. Technician performs a thorough visual inspection of the air intake system and intake manifold and documents the results. This is to see if vacuum leak is visually obvious. Tech info: Verify the condition of the Air Intake Components, Throttle Body, Vacuum Hoses, Mass Air Flow Sensor, if equipped, and EGR Valve, if equipped. In some cases a repair may be necessary before a test drive is possible or even needed. I

Inspection Results: _______________________________________________________________ 5. Technician test drives the vehicle with a data streaming scan tool and duplicates the operating conditions that were recorded in the Freeze Frame(s) and verifies the code condition, if possible. During this Test Drive He/She evaluates the over all performance of the Engine and Power Train and the over all vehicle condition, i.e. transmission slips, the brakes are unsafe etc Test Drive Results: _______________________________________________________________ 6. Technician studies and writes down the code setting parameters. This is to ensure that the technician is completely clear on what data values the Power Train Control Module is evaluating to trigger the code(s) as well as any other System codes that may contribute to the malfunction. Parameters: _____________________________________________________________________ 7. Technician performs a smoke test of the entire air intake system and (if equipped) vacuum brake booster to pinpoint the location of any vacuum leak(s) and documents the results. Note: A smoke test is performed with a special tool that pressurizes the air intake system with a safe smoke generated from heated baby oil. This is a safe method for locating a vacuum leak. Smoke Inspection Results:__________________________________________________________ 8. Technician evaluates the results of the above inspections and makes the proper repair recommendation(s). Repair Recommendations: __________________________________________________________ 9. Once the Vacuum leak and any codes are repaired, the Technician performs a Drive Cycle Test Drive to ensure that the Vacuum leak and code(s) have been properly repaired. Tech Info: In some cases, if a Vacuum leak and Check Engine code are present for weeks or more, other parts of the Emissions Control System may have been over worked and damaged. For example, if a vehicle is driven with a rough running or misfiring engine, the Catalytic Converter may have been over worked, however the Catalyst Monitoring has been ignored by the Power Train Control Module due to the rough running engine. Drive Cycle Completes free of codes: Yes_____ No_____ Codes: _________________________
