Before German security police could find and
deport Danish Jews, virtually all of them went into
hiding. Then, over the course of just two weeks,
Danish citizens helped secretly ferry some 7,200
Jews (of the country’s total Jewish population of
7,800) by boat to safety in neutral Sweden.

Then they came for me – and there was no one
left to speak for me.

Writing From My Rocker
By Hazel Goodrich
Summer has come and gone, and I am afraid it took most of my
ambition with it! I’m hoping it returns with the cool, crisp breezes
of Autumn. The flowers were lovely and the garden productive;
my children made sure I enjoyed fresh veggies. Somewhere in the
process of moving and settling in a new and strange (to me)
atmosphere, I allowed myself to become lost in the changes. I became quite self-
absorbed and deep in the world of “I-Me-Mine.” I suspect many of you know exactly
where that might be. I have come to understand that to pull back into oneself can be a
lonely place. Watching other people from my vantage point of my rocker by the
window, I have begun to see how really blessed I am. I have reasonably good health, I
can see and hear pretty well and I can still get around without mechanical aid. How
brave some people are! I am encouraged by the smiles and friendly greetings of those
whose handicaps are more severe than mine. Every day in spite of my personal
experiences, good and bad, the sun still comes up and goes down on its schedule, not
mine. God’s timetable is so much more efficient!
I struggle with cooking for one and feeling like the odd man out at functions, but it is
getting better. So many women and men in this boat. The healing process is slow and
sometimes painful, but it will occur. The time it takes is unique to the person involved,
but it will happen. Looking outside of the “I-Me-Mine” is a good way to begin. Reaching
out to others, listening to good counsel, concentrating on the “now” and not the “was”
putting tomorrow in second place behind today…these things all help. My faith sustains
me, always there to pick me up when I fall. Good friends and family so loyal!
It has been a pleasant summer, thanks to the wonderful concerts at the depot in
Newark Valley. The price fit my purse, the staff in the snack kitchen lifted my spirits
with their cheerful attitude, helping me to see that life can still be a good experience
aside from the trials.
I am looking forward to the amazing show Autumn puts on, fall festivals with apple
pies, candy apples and plenty of fresh cider. Winter will come all too soon but the
cycles of season are as important as the cycles of life. Whichever one you are in, stop
for a moment and consider where you might be, appreciate where you are, be kind to
others, and learn to listen. That means so much in difficult times or in any situation.
Stay well and God bless.

NATURALLY ANTIBACTERIAL ESSENTIAL OILS
For eons, essential oils derived from plants and
flowers have been valued for their medicinal and
therapeutic properties. Modern science has verified
the value of many traditional oils, especially their
antiseptic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral
qualities. Most notable in this regard are cinnamon,
clove, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, orange,
oregano, rosemary, tea tree, and thyme.
Essential oils are effective additions to homemade
cleaning formulas made from basics like vinegar
and baking soda. They can be added to liquid hand
soap and they smell fantastic!
Pure essential oils are available at most natural
markets and from online sources. Though they are
not cheap, a little goes a long way; one bottle can
easily last a year.

DID YOU KNOW… Shampoo made for human hair is ideal for washing natural animal fibers such as wool and cashmere
without stripping the natural oils from the fiber.

Apple Folklore
The apple played an important role in many Greek stories. As
an example, the fall of Troy is indirectly blamed on a golden
apple. All the gods and goddesses were invited to the wedding
of Thetis, the sea nymph, and Peleus, a mortal king. All except
Discord, who in her anger tossed a golden apple among the
guests, saying it was for "the most beautiful." Juno, Minerva
and Venus all felt entitled to the prize, so Paris, son of Priam,

CANCER-FIGHTING FOODS
Onions and garlic are very healthful. Researchers have
discovered that the more onions and garlic people ate, the less
likely they were to develop common cancers such as oral,
colorectal and ovarian cancer.
Onions and garlic are packed with natural cancer-fighting
chemical compounds. Onions are rich in flavonoids, disease-
fighting antioxidants that prevent oxidative damage to body
cells that can eventually lead to cancer. Garlic is packed with
organosulfur compounds that inhibit tumor growth.

Barley (continued)
For years, scientists have been trying to figure out why
vegetarians tend to escape heart attacks, strokes, diabetes,
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, “bad” LDL cholesterol,
and certain cancers.
In a study that began in 1977, an active compound in barley
that suppressed the liver’s ability to make cholesterol was
isolated. This compound was called tocotrienol (Inhibitor 1).
Two other inhibitors were also found. All were present

RAISE A GLASS TO RED
A daily glass of red wine or grape juice can boost levels
of HDL and reduce LDL, thanks to saponins, beneficial
compounds in red grapes, according to a 2003
University of California, Davis study.

Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut recommends

no more than 1 (4-ounce) glass of wine per day for
women. If you’re a teetotaler, other high-saponin foods
include soy beans and olive oil.

HEALTH TIP – Eat Nuts

Despite being high in fat, nuts are incredibly
nutritious and healthy. They are loaded with
magnesium, vitamin E, fiber and various other nutrients.
Studies show that nuts can help you lose weight, and may
help fight type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Additionally, about 10-15% of the calories in nuts aren't
even absorbed into the body, and some evidence
suggests that they can boost metabolism. In one
study, almonds were shown to increase weight loss by
62% compared to complex carbohydrates.

IF I KNEW YOU AND YOU KNEW ME Why do you whirl a lantern

By Nixon Waterman that flashes into my eyes?

If I knew you and you knew me Because a hawk flies above my head
If both of us could clearly see and a tower stands behind me.
And with an inner sight divine Why do you sit with one bare foot exposed?
The meaning of your heart and mine
I’m sure that we would differ less Because yellow flowers surprise my ankles
And clasp our hands in friendliness and a soldier stands there watching.
Our thoughts would pleasantly agree Why do you dare to climb down the hill?

And say your prayers
Because There was a church on the hill at the crossroads
Jesus and germs nearly there, are we? Where our mothers and fathers knelt down
Are everywhere! (smile. smile, darn you.) To point us to Jesus our Savior
And to show neighbor’s needs as our own.

Through the drifted snow in the winter

Through the mud in the spring and fall
Through the dust and the fragrance of summer
The folks all came, great and small.

The church stands no more at the crossroads

Its people are scattered and gone
Across the hill in the graveyard
Silent stones tell a tale that is done.

So I stand on the hill at the crossroads

With a lump in my throat I affirm
No spot was so dear to my childhood
As that little white church on the hill.
