1 General
This operating guide is designed to enable the user to work safely with the X-ray systems
from the MG103 - MG605 range. This guide contains all the key information needed to
operate the system in a safe manner. The system must be operated in accordance with
these safety instructions.
This operating guide should be read through carefully and its information heeded.
Depending on the version supplied, the number and arrangement of the parts may vary.

1.1 Proper use


The MG103 – MG605 X-ray systems may only be used for the inspection and irradiation
of materials and not for any other applications.
The control unit monitors, controls and regulates all necessary functions related to the
safe operation of the complete system.
Using the system properly also includes:
- heeding all instructions from the operating guide

- adhering to all prescribed inspections and maintenance jobs

1.2 Improper use


Any applications other than material inspection or irradiation (e.g. medical applications)
are forbidden. Improper use can be dangerous.
Improper use in this sense includes, for instance, fitting non-specified parts.

1.3 Symbols and their meaning
Symbols are used in this operating guide that are intended to help the user find infor-
mation faster and more effectively. These symbols are explained below.

► Actions that have to be executed are signified by a triangle (►) on the left and described
to the right or underneath in words and generally also with graphics. The key points of the
action are written in bold.

 Confirmation of the action performed is signified by the arrow () on the left.

- Lists are marked by a dash (-) on the left.

Note: This symbol is used whenever particular information is required.

Tip: This symbol is followed by user tips and particularly useful information. These tips
help users to make optimum utilization of all the system’s functions.

Option: This symbol helps readers to recognize options. Some options are not available
on every system.

1.4 Safety symbols


High-voltage connection: A connection point at which in relation to another connection
point or to other parts a voltage of 1,000V or more is present or can be triggered.

X-ray radiation: This symbol is used when there is a danger of X-ray radiation.

Caution: Is used in order to point out the correct way to proceed when operating or main-
taining the system in order to prevent damaging or breaking the system or any other de-
vices.
Warning: Indicates potential danger. In order to prevent personal injury users need to
proceed or act correctly.

Disconnect prior to any work: Prior to any maintenance or inspection jobs and/or prior
to opening the protective cladding, the system must be disconnected, i.e. the power sup-
ply must be broken in such a way that the system cannot start up!
Protective earth: This symbol is used to mark the connections for protective earth con-
ductors.

1.5 Dangers associated with working with the X-ray emitter
The MG103 – MG605 X-ray systems are built to the very latest technical standards and
conform to all recognized safety regulations. Nevertheless, if used improperly they can po-
tentially present danger to life or limb of the user or third parties and/or cause impairment
to the systems or other property.
Caution: The system must only be used:
- for the intended purpose
- in perfectly safe condition
Remedy without delay any faults that may impact operational safety!

1.6 General safety instructions


A basic prerequisite for working safely with the X-ray emitter and operating it without any
problems is good knowledge of the basic safety instructions and regulations.
Safety instructions and regulations must be adhered to at all times.
Special ‘Caution’ and ‘Warning’ instructions are highlighted by symbols in the relevant
chapters of this guide.
At places of danger the system is marked BEWARE / WARNING and/or with the symbols.
Caution: The operating company is fundamentally responsible for adherence to the statu-
tory regulations.
Systems with any technical faults must not be operated. Safety devices must not be re-
moved or modified.

1.6.1 Organizational measures


The operating company must provide the necessary personal protective equipment.
All safety devices in place on the X-ray system must be checked regularly in accordance
with local regulations.
In all correspondence relating to this X-ray emitter please state type number and serial
number. You will find these details on the type plate.

1.6.2 Safety impairments


If it is no longer possible to ensure safe working, the system must be taken out of opera-
tion and secured against any inadvertent use. The support organization responsible for
the equipment must be notified at once.

1.6.3 Requirements of the operating staff
In order to be able to operate the system safely and correctly it is essential for the user
and servicing staff to follow the generally applicable safety regulations and the safety in-
structions set out in this operating guide.
Caution: The MG103 – MG605 X-ray systems may be operated only by appropriately
trained personnel who have been fully instructed in their use! They should acknowledge in
writing their receipt of such instruction.
Installation, calibration, maintenance and repair of the system may be done only by quali-
fied personnel who are aware of the risks and dangers.

1.6.4 Electrical safety


Only properly trained maintenance personnel are authorized to take off the system’s co-
vers and to remove the high-voltage cable from the X-ray emitter and high-voltage gen-
erator.
Caution: Whenever the high-voltage cable is being disconnected from the X-ray emitter,
the cable must be discharged by touching with a grounded conductor.
The electrical contacts and the high-voltage cable’s rubber cone must not be touched.

1.6.5 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)


This system fulfils the requirements of the EMC standards stated in the declaration of con-
formity (see section 1.11).
When used correctly this electronic device conforms to the statutory EMC provisions,
which define for electronic devices the emission level and their shielding from electric
fields. It is nevertheless impossible to rule out with absolute certainty that frequencies
from high-frequency transmitters – e.g. from mobile telephones or similar devices that
themselves comply with the EMC provisions – may affect the smooth functioning of this
device if used in its immediate vicinity. In order to rule out any high-frequency interfer-
ence, the use of this system in close proximity of high-power electronically operated appli-
ances should therefore be avoided.
Explanation:
Electronic devices that fulfill the EMC provisions are manufactured in such a way that un-
der normal conditions they present no risk of high-frequency interference. Electromagnetic
interference caused by devices with high transmission output can, however, not be ruled
out completely if these are used in the immediate vicinity.
In the most unfavorable of circumstances the possibility of there being some risk to the
user cannot be ruled out completely. The operation of all devices with significant levels of
HF emission should therefore be avoided.

1.6.6 Protection from radiation


X-ray radiation: With the high voltage switched on this system produces X-rays, which, if
the system is used incorrectly, can be harmful to health. The system may only be operat-
ed by professionally qualified personnel. The safety key is to be kept securely so that any

unauthorized switching on of the system is prevented.
The organization operating the equipment is responsible for adherence to the statutory
regulations during the system’s set-up and operation.
Systems with any technical faults must not be operated. Safety devices must not be re-
moved or modified.
The radiation protection must be checked and monitored by authorized personnel.
The system’s radiation protection is warranted by the manufacturer in accordance with
German X-ray legislation and DIN 54113. The system also complies with US standard
21CFR §1020.40 (cabinet X-ray systems).
Caution: All components used for switching on X-ray radiation (e.g. control unit MGC41
or any external button or PC connected to it) must be positioned outside of the radiation
protection chamber/cabin.
Enabling X-ray radiation to be switched on from inside the X-ray protection chamber / cab-
in is strictly forbidden.
It is sensible to have the doors of X-ray protection chambers/cabins lock electro-
magnetically. A floating contact is available for such locking. The attached locking magnet
gets released only once the reheating time (radiation protection) has expired.
X-ray radiation: In the case of the X-ray system being described, capacitors are used in
the high-voltage generator. After the high voltage is switched off, these capacitors and the
high-voltage cable still have an electric charge. During the reheating period (yellow warn-
ing light), this gets discharged via the tube current and precision resistor. Normally this pe-
riod is so short (0.2 - 0.3 seconds) that it does not get noticed.
In exceptional cases, if the high voltage is switched off with the filament cold (i.e. prior to
switching off no tube current had been flowing), the reheating time can last up to 1 se-
cond. If the filament is defective, the capacities get discharged solely via the precision re-
sistors. In this case the discharge period can be up to 4 seconds (if a particularly long
high-voltage cable is being used). During the reheating phase all warning lights remain on
and the locking contacts are still active (see sections 3.7.3 and 3.7.4).

1.6.7 Safety and warning features


In order to fulfill the relevant radiation protection standards at the site where the system is
being operated, the safety and warning features listed below are installed or can be at-
tached:
On the control unit:
- (1) 3-position key-operated mains switch
(In the ‘High voltage’ position the key cannot be pulled out)
- (2) Pre-warning light (blue, pre-warning time 1 - 30 seconds; can be set via keypad)
- (3) Flashing warning light (by default yellow, in some countries red)

On the power module:


- Two independently working floating door contacts can be attached
- An electro-magnetic door locking mechanism can be attached
- External warning lights can be attached
- Pre-warning device (e.g. hooter or light) can be attached
- CDRH switch can be attached (for 21CFR §1020.40)
Note: How the external safety fittings are attached is described in section 3.7.

Caution: Only original replacement parts may be used.

1.6.8 Structural modifications
Any structural modifications, additions or conversions may be made only with the written
consent of Yxlon International GmbH (hereinafter referred to as ‘Yxlon’). All parts not in
perfect condition must be replaced immediately. Only original replacement parts may be
used.

1.7 Guarantee and obligations


Yxlon’s general terms of sale and supply apply. These terms have been known to the pur-
chaser at the latest since the day of signing the purchase contract.
No guarantee or liability claims will be accepted where such claims relate to any of the sit-
uations listed below:
- Any other than normal use of the product
- Incorrect installation, commissioning, operation, repair or maintenance of the product by
non-authorized personnel
- Use of the product with defective, wrongly fitted or non-functioning safety or protective
devices
- Non-adherence to the instructions given in this operating guide in relation to transport,
storage, installation, commissioning, operation, repair or maintenance of the product
- Non-approved structural changes to the product
- Non-approved modifications to the product (e.g., structural changes that impair radiation
protection)
- Inadequate checking of parts subject to wear and tear
- Inadequately performed repair work
- Natural disasters
Yxlon shall not be liable for any damage or losses arising due to the use of this product or
to the inability to use it.
X-ray emitters are vacuum items. If the emitters are being stored for a relatively long peri-
od, it is recommended that you condition them every 6 months.
(See section 3.10.2)
Warning: Any modification of the product or of the original installation not approved by
Yxlon results in the declaration of conformity losing its validity.

1.8 Transport and checking goods supplied
Caution: High-voltage generators and coolers must only ever be transported upright.

Open the individual packages.


The shipping papers provide information on the contents of the individual packages.

Before beginning assembly compare the delivery note against the contents of the packages
and against the order.

1.9 Cleaning the MGC41 operating panel


Caution: Before cleaning switch off the mains power!
Do not let any water or other liquids get into the inside of the device. This prevents any
short circuits in the electrical installation and any corrosion on the components.
Clean plastic surfaces using a soapy solution only!
Painted parts and aluminum surfaces must only be wiped with a damp cloth and mild
cleaning agent, then rubbed with a dry woolen cloth!
Do not use any caustic, solvent or abrasive cleaning agent or polish or any agent or polish
with a high alcohol content! Otherwise the surfaces become tarnished or cracked.

1.10 Disposal
If used properly, an X-ray system represents no risk to users or the environment.
The operation of an X-ray system does, however, require the use of coolants that can be
damaging to the environment and these therefore have to be disposed of properly in ac-
cordance with relevant regulations.
Electrical scrap, oil, coolant and grease must not be disposed of with normal industrial or
household rubbish.
X-ray tubes potentially contain substances, e.g. beryllium windows and lead shielding, that
are hazardous to the environment. These components must therefore be disposed of in
an environmentally friendly manner.
Tip: Yxlon will assist you in disposing of these materials properly and feeds reusable ma-
terial back into the production cycle via certified disposal companies, thus helping to ease
the burden on our environment. Therefore please contact the Yxlon support team about
this.
Important disposal information / return of devices as per directive 2002/96/EC
1. Portable and mobile devices
Portable and/or mobile devices that you have bought from Yxlon are governed by the
regulations of European Directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE, Waste Electric and Electronic
Equipment) and its corresponding incorporation into the laws of EU member states (in
Germany the ‘ElektroG’). Based on these regulations you have the opportunity and ob-
ligation to return the device to Yxlon at the end of its serviceable life for proper disposal
and recycling. In accordance with our general terms and conditions the place where
this obligation to return the device has to be fulfilled is Hamburg.
2. Stationary Yxlon inspection systems
Stationary or fixed equipment and devices do not fall under the scope of applicability of
the statutory regulations referred to above. Please be specifically advised that in this
respect there is therefore no obligation to return such equipment.
3. Digital image processing systems
Depending on the supply specification this may include freestanding PCs and monitors.
At the end of their serviceable life these are to be returned to Yxlon for appropriate re-
cycling. The detectors, on the other hand, that may have been supplied with them for
use in the radiation protection chambers are, in terms of the statutory regulations, part
of a stationary installation and are therefore governed by point 2 above.
4. Instructions
If based on the criteria cited above your Yxlon device is subject to the return regula-
tions, the following provisions apply:

Note: Yxlon devices must not end up in unsorted commercial waste.

In terms of the WEEE, Yxlon devices are “purely commercially used devices” and may
not, like so-called consumer appliances (e.g. washing machines, video recorders or

standard PCs), be deposited at local authority waste collection points.
The WEEE symbol – an underlined dustbin with a cross through it – on your device is
there to show that it is a WEEE-relevant device. Appliances with this symbol must accord-
ingly be disposed of separately. In some EU states (including Germany) the symbol is not
obligatory for devices used solely for commercial purposes. Yxlon nevertheless uses it
consistently across the whole of Europe. Despite the use of this symbol it is expressly for-
bidden to return Yxlon devices to local authority waste collection points (see above)!
If you have agreed your own solution with Yxlon or a local distribution partner whereby
proper disposal is handled directly by you, please ensure that the device is properly recy-
cled in accordance with WEEE rules and notify Yxlon / your distribution partner whenever
this has been done and of the recycling quotas accrued, so that this can be relayed to the
relevant state authorities.
If you are about to dispose of equipment, please contact Yxlon directly or your local distri-
bution partner to ask about the current method for sending it back. We are happy to an-
swer any questions you may have in this regard.

2 General description
The Yxlon industrial X-ray systems are highly stable direct current systems. They set high
standards of quality and ease of operation. In each high-voltage generator the high volt-
age get measured directly via a precision resistor.
Through the integrated microprocessor the MGC41 control unit provides extreme ease of
use and top-rate operational safety. The X-ray parameters (kV, mA) are kept extremely
stable by constant monitoring of the target and actual values. The system is protected
from overloading by continuous comparison of the operating levels with its maximum rat-
ings.
The high working frequency of 40kHz for high voltage generation and tube heating facili-
tates excellent stability in the short, medium and long-term range and minimal ripple.
The X-ray systems are easy to operate, as the MGC41 control unit’s basic data setting is
menu driven. System data and error messages get displayed in plain text on a large, clear
display. Further error indicators can additionally be retrieved via a numeric code.
All system components are protected from being touched or affected by foreign bodies or
water. The protective classes attained by the system are described in section 2.2.7.
Note: All of the functions and parameters described in this operating guide are based on
the standard firmware, which is stored on the MGC41 unit’s standard EPROM.
In individual cases it is possible for the MGC41 to be equipped with a custom PROM. It is
possible then that some functions and parameters (e.g. selection of possible X-ray tubes,
permitted level of high voltage) may differ from the description in this guide.

The flanges for the high-voltage cable connections are supplied with the tube / generator.

We recommend using spring-loaded cables, as they are more advantageous for all appli-
cations than standard cables. Spring-loaded cables are qualitatively better than standard
cables, especially where they are exposed to strong fluctuations of ambient temperature.

3 Installation
Caution: Only personnel specially trained on this system may carry out the installation.
If the generators are set up inside the radiation chamber, the distance between X-ray tube
and generator must be more than 1.5 meters and the generator may not be positioned
within the X-ray tube’s direct beam.
All connecting lines, especially the high-voltage cables, must be laid in such a way that it
is impossible for them to be damaged, e.g. through being driven over by forklift trucks.
The complete system was pre-assembled and checked in the factory. All connecting lines
are already provided with plugs.
All that installing the system involves is setting up and connecting the components. It is
essential in this process to keep to the order described in sections 3.2 to 3.10.

3.1 Overview of the connections
Caution: The mains supply line may only be connected once all installation tasks have
been completed. Prior to switching the system on it is essential that you read section 3.10
‘Getting started’ and 4 ‘Operation’ and heed the radiation protection requirements.

3.2 Establish earth connections
Caution: Poor or wrongly established earth connections are dangerous and can cause
the system to become irreparably damaged. While the system is in use, earthing cables
must not be rolled up or run in loops.
The system must be earthed in accordance with
EN 60204.
The system is supplied with 25 meters of
earthing cable (8.5mm2) and the
corresponding lugs. 1
The central earthing point is the
earthing bolt on the
minus generator (1).

Note: The system must be connected from the central earthing point to the operational
earth in such a way that the earth connection remains intact even when the mains plug is
pulled out.
In order to keep earthing resistance low, the cable runs should be kept as short as possi-
ble.
Establish the following earth connections:

- Central earthing point – operational earth


- Central earthing point – X-ray tube
- Central earthing point – plus high voltage generator (if fitted)
To do this use the earthing line and cable lugs supplied with the system.

3.3 Connecting the high-voltage cables
Two types of high-voltage cable can be used: spring-loaded R10SL, R24SL or R28SL ca-
ble or R10, R24, R28 or R30 cable, which is not spring loaded.

Caution: Do not use high voltage plugs with:


- inadequate/excess contact pressure
- too little / too much silicone paste
- dirt on the rubber cone or in the high-voltage plug socket
Use of such plugs can lead to high-voltage sparkovers, which can destroy the high-
voltage plug and the cable isolator.
These parts cannot be repaired and are not exchanged under guarantee. Responsibility
for connecting the high-voltage cable correctly lies with the person carrying this out.
Tip: The high-voltage cable must be connected at one end to the high voltage generator
and at the other end to the X-ray tube. The procedure when connecting is identical for
both connections.
1. Undo the 4 screws (1) and remove the protec-
tive cap.
2. Remove the protective sleeve from the cable

cone.
3. Clean the cable cone and high-voltage socket
with a clean, lint-free paper towel or cloth. All
dirt and/or old silicone paste must be cleared

Caution: Do not use any cleaning agent or mechanical aids. Use solely fresh silicone
paste to do the cleaning.

4. Apply a line of silicone paste of c. 2.5 - 3cm in length and c. 4 - 5mm in diameter to
the cable cone and spread this over the cone evenly as a thin film. As the silicone
paste, use only type P4. Be absolutely certain to avoid getting any paste on the con-
tacts.
5. Insert the plug fully into the X-ray emitter’s high-voltage plug socket. Make sure that
as it goes in the plug’s contacts do not touch the high-voltage socket. Ensure that the
plug has been inserted all the way to the bottom of the high-voltage socket and that
the cable head has passed the opening to the electrical contacts.
6. Verify the gap between cable flange and tube / high voltage generator flange and if
necessary adjust. The distance must be Xmm. The value for X must be taken from ta-
ble 10. Please note that HV cables with spring plugs require a greater gap than other
cables.

7. If the gap is not Xmm, undo the locking screw on the cable flange and rotate the
flange until a gap of Xmm is reached. One (1) rotation of the cable flange corresponds
to a change in the gap of 1.5mm.
8. Insert the cable flange screws (1) and tighten up again until the flange is firmly in
place (X = 0mm).
9. Wait c. 10 minutes. Then undo the flange screws (1). The cable cone must now move
back the set distance X. During the check do not pull the cable cone out of the isolator.
Check the gap between cable flange and high voltage generator. If the gap is not
Xmm, correct accordingly by rotating the flange.
10. In the case of a new installation operate the system in run-in program 103 or for c.
hours.
Proceed once again as described at point 9. Then tighten the cable flange again and

using the locking screws secure on the high-voltage cable.
Note: Do not use any HV cables that are obviously defective. During operation defective
HV cables can cause major damage to the X-ray emitter and the high voltage generator.

Caution: Strain relief for the HV cables


During operation high-voltage connections should not be exposed to any forces (e.g. no
pull on the cable cone caused by the cable’s own weight).
It is therefore very important, especially in inspection systems with moving X-ray emitters,
that the HV cables near to the X-ray emitter are mechanically fixed in place.
Very important:
If necessary in the vicinity of the X-ray emitter fit a strain relief mechanism for the HV ca-
bles. There must be no tensile or shearing forces on the HV cone! Any freely suspended
cables must be fixed after 2 meters.

3.4 Maintenance of high-voltage cables

Depending on their use, a service is recommended every 3-6 months for spring-loaded
cables and every 6-12 months for non-spring-load cables.
Follow all of the procedural steps specified above and review the process to complete the
service.
Please contact Comet if the maintenance intervals need to be adapted to customer usage.

3.5 Install cooler


Based on system configuration one of the cooling systems listed below is supplied.
- Mains water cooling (flow switch) for single-pole X-ray tubes
- Water cooler for single-pole X-ray tubes
- Oil cooler for two-pole X-ray tubes
- Cooling block for high ambient temperatures
Caution: The following must be heeded for all cooling units:
Electrical connection is via a special 12-pin plug on the power module. Running across
this is a safety circuit that breaks if the coolant temperature gets too high or the flow rate
is too low.
When connecting the hoses, be sure to get the direction of coolant flow correct. The rele-
vant symbols are marked on the cooling unit and on the X-ray tube. For the connection of
the oil hoses there is also color-coding (blue: tube feed; red: tube return).
Cooling units with air-cooling must be set up upright and on their own in order to ensure
adequate air circulation (minimum distance in each case of 0.5 meters from the ventilation
grille). When the system has been switched on for the first time, the coolant level should
be checked and if necessary topped up.
In the water/air coolers the antifreeze Glycoshell is used. This, however, is primarily to
prevent lime scale. This additionally protects the device from freezing at temperatures

down to -25°C. When topping up the anti-freeze, you must use Glycoshell.
The only oil used in oil coolers is Shell’s transformer oil Diala G. Replacement 5-liter cans
of this oil are available from Yxlon International. Before using the oil cooler for the first
time the closed transportation cap must be removed from the filler neck and replaced with
the vented operational cap supplied.
Caution: The limit levels set in the cooling units for flow rate and coolant temperature
must not be changed!

3.5.1 Cooler follow-up control


In order to operate the cooler, including after the X-ray system has been switched off, for
the timeframe required for the emitter to cool down after operation it is possible to inte-
grate a cooler follow-up control unit.
Independent of the MG system’s mains supply, the cooler follow-up control unit (4512-
104-83951) can be connected to an external socket or, if necessary, to a UPS, uninter-
ruptible power supply (4512-104-83961 or 4512-104-85041).

3.6 Connect control unit


The cable between control unit Y.MGC41 and power module is attached to the control unit
at the factory.
Connect the plug to the power module (see also section 3.1).

Caution: The control line must be laid separated from the other power lines. If laying it
with other lines in the same cable duct cannot be avoided, care must be taken to at least
ensure there is a gap between them or the line must be pulled into a shielding hose.
Note: The control line must not exceed a total length of 100 meters. A maximum of one
extension may be used.

3.7 Connect plus high voltage generator (if there is one)


Connect the plus high voltage generator’s cable to the plug coupler on the back of the
power module (see also section 3.1).

3.8 Connect external safety devices
Caution: Safety and warning devices for X-ray systems and radiation protection rooms
must be installed in accordance with local regulations.

There are two versions of the interface circuit board:


1. For 230VAC warning lights
2. For 24VDC LED warning lights
Depending on the version the warning lights are connected differently and are described
separately in section 3.8.1 and 3.8.2.
The remaining safety connections on the terminal block are identical on both versions (fig.
14 Terminal block in the MGP40/41). These are described in detail as of section 3.8.3.
On a terminal block (1) inside the power module
connection possibilities are provided for the follow-
ing safety devices:

3.8.3 Door contacts I and II
The door contacts are protective devices as defined by DIN 54113. Their purpose is to
monitor access to the radiation protection rooms or areas. X-ray radiation can only be
switched on if both contacts are closed and gets switched off if either contact is opened.
The safety circuit is designed in such a way that both contacts have to be opened and
closed again simultaneously so that the high voltage can be switched on. This is indicated
by the green light on the control unit.
The maximum permitted time deviation between the two doors is 0.5 seconds. The door
switches must be floating, forcibly actuated contacts. The switching voltage is 24V= and
the current 25mA.
If the mains switch on the MGC41 is turned into the ‘0’ or ‘~’ position, this has the same
effect as opening both door contacts.

3.8.4 Lock mechanism contact


For the electromagnetic locking of radiation
protection doors, cabin windows or similar
it is possible to connect this contact.
The contact closes at the start of the pre-
warning period and opens when the reheat-
ing period is over. The contact load capaci-
ty is 250V~ / 1A.

3.8.5 Monitoring the lock mechanism


The X-ray system can monitor the lock
mechanism to ensure it is working. Lock mechanism

en before X-ray radiation begins.

3.8.7 Automatic systems


The system is shipped with this contact bridged.
It is intended for use only in automatic systems. Fig. 22 ‘Automatic systems’
safety circuit

In modes 000, 1--, 2-- and 3-- the function of the ‘Automatic systems’ safety circuit is
analogous to that of other safety circuits. The high voltage gets switched off and can only
be turned back on by using the ‘Radiation ON’ button.
In modes 4--, 5--, 6-- and 7-- the high voltage also gets switched off whenever the contact
opens. Once the contact is closed again, it can, however, be switched back on via an ex-
ternal computer/interface, without using the ‘Radiation ON’ button.
Caution: This function enables the high voltage to be switched on externally and may be
used only in order, for instance, to facilitate feeding an automatic system through air locks.
In order to eliminate any danger to users or others, it must be ensured by means of the
door switches that whenever anyone enters the danger area the system goes into ‘Stand-
by’ mode and can then no longer be switched on externally.
The door switches are failsafe safety devices as defined by DIN 54113.

3.8.8 Connection possibility for CDRH switch (for the USA only)
To comply with American standard 21 CFR 1020.40 a CDRH switch can be connected to
the power module. This switch breaks the primary power supply to the inverter for gener-
ating high voltage.
The CDRH switch can be connected between the contactor contacts K1:4 and K1:6 (L-
conductor) and K1:2 and K3:4 (N-conductor). Remove the links and replace them with the
CDRH switch. The required cross-section of the connection cable is:
- MGP40: 4 mm2
- MGP41: 10 mm2

Warning: CDRH switches may only be used as additional safety devices. They may not
be used to replace any other safety devices (door switches).

3.8.9 The multi-generator system


The MGC41W control unit makes it possible with the help of a distributor box to operate
up to three generators at once. The ‘Multi-generator system installation’ illustration shows
the connection scheme of such a system for single pole X-ray systems. The distributor
box is connected by the normal cable and an additional cable to the control unit (X1, X2).
It is also connected by a connection cable to each of the three possible generators (X3,
X4, X5). If generators X4 and/or X5 are not be connected, a blanking plug must be fitted
onto the vacant slots. Generator 1 (X3) must always be connected.
Generators 1 - 3 are normal standard generators (power module + high voltage genera-
tor). All generators and tubes must be of the same model. The X-ray parameters can be
different.
Note: In the case of multi-generator systems all external safety devices are connected not
to the power modules but to the distributor box.
The ‘Connection of safety devices to the distributor box’ drawing contains all necessary
connection information.

3.10 Establish mains power connection


Caution: Incorrect mains power connection can cause the system irreparable damage.

The mains connection is located on the power module. Fit a plug to the 10-meter long
mains cable provided.
The required mains voltage is 230V +10% / -15%.
It must be possible to turn off the mains power by means of a switch.

3.10.1 Mains power connection for multi-generator systems


1. Where the mains power is a single-phase supply, all generators must be connect-
ed to the mains in the same way, i.e.: connect the blue cables and the brown ca-
bles from each generator to the corresponding pole of the mains supply!
2. Where the mains power is a three-phase supply, each generator should be oper-
ated on a different phase. In this case the relevant blue cable of the generator
connections must be connected to the neutral phase of the mains supply (neutral
conductor). The brown cables each get connected to one of the mains power
phases.
The voltage between the neutral conductor and the individual phases must be 230V.

3.11 Getting started
Caution: Before using the system for the first time the safety regulations relating to work-
ing with X-ray radiation must be read. The system may be switched on only by qualified
personnel.

3.11.1 Using the system for the first time


The MGC41 does not need to be aligned.
The control unit recognizes the connected high voltage generator and automatically re-
stricts the operating levels that can be set to the maximum figures.
Caution: The control unit cannot recognize the attached tube.
Before taking the system into operation, you must check whether the tube shown on the
top row of the control unit display matches the tube attached.
If this is not the case, the control unit must be programmed for the attached tube.
The programming process is described in section 4.6.8 ‘Tube selection’.

3.11.2 Conditioning the tube


Caution: Before switching on the high voltage, follow the attached tube’s conditioning in-
structions. Failure to do this can lead to the tube being irreparably damaged.

Three conditioning programmers are preset. The relevant programmed needs to be se-
lected based on the length of the break in operations:
1-3 days Program 101
4 - 14 days Program 102
Over 14 days Program 103
New tube Program 103
The conditioning process is described in section 4.5.2 ‘Conditioning’.
Once mains power is switched on programmed selection runs menu-driven.
Caution: If conditioning is being done within complete irradiation systems, the X-ray de-
tector must be protected from direct radiation, e.g. by switching the detector off or by fit-
ting an appropriate filter.

This is the button that has to be used to switch off the high voltage if the scan time has
been set to indefinite or the user wants to abort the scan.

Stand-by light
The green stand-by light comes on whenever the generator is ready, all safety contacts
are closed and the cooling system is switched on.

Flashing warning light


The yellow/red flashing warning light flashes as soon as the high voltage is switched on.
If the high voltage is switched off, it goes out after a maximum of 4 seconds. During this
period the capacitors in the high voltage generator may cause post-scan irradiation of the
system.

Pre-warning light
The blue pre-warning light stays on throughout the pre-set pre-warning period.
Caution: The pre-warning period is the last warning before the radiation process begins.
Everybody must have already left the radiation area before this period starts.

Focus
► Press the ‘Foc’ button to select the focus size.
When using standard tubes with 2 focus sizes pressing the button flips you to and fro
between the two sizes.
Note: Switching focus size is possible only with the high voltage turned on.

Grid-controlled tubes:
The focus size gets altered by adjusting the tube current (mA).
The choice of correct focus size / tube current is dependent on the item being scanned /
the application.
The focus size set gets shown on the display above the ‘Foc’ button. The value shown is
determined in accordance with EN12543.
The table shown in section 2.1.4. can be used to convert focus sizes as per IEC336 into
EN12543 figures.

The MGC41 offers various different options for parameter entry. These options are
controlled by the ‘Mode’ and accordingly displayed (in the left-hand top corner of the
display; see section 4.5 ‘Operating modes’).
After mains power is switched on, the control unit initially offers a conditioning mode,
which can either be accepted or skipped (see section 4.5.2 ‘Conditioning’).
If the system has not been used for some time, a conditioning mode should definitely
be selected.

The high voltage switches itself off after the pre-selected time has expired or, if the timer
is set to indefinite, is switched off by pressing the ‘Radiation OFF’ button.
After a short reheating period the system shuts down. The purpose of the reheating pro-
cess is to discharge the high-voltage capacitors.
Caution: After the high voltage has been switched off, the tube must continue to be
cooled for at least a further 3 minutes in order to draw off the residual heat from the anode
block. On systems with a closed cooling system (water or oil cooler) the mains switch
must be in the ‘~’ or ‘’ position throughout the post-scan cooling period.
When in ‘Radiation ON’ operating mode the system must not be turned off directly from
the mains switch. Make absolutely sure that the ‘Radiation OFF’ button is pressed first!
Warning: After the high voltage has been switched off, the capacitors used inside the
high voltage generator retain their charge and cause a post-scan radiation effect.

Through reheating the charge and thus the radiation effect get dissipated within a maxi-
mum of 4 seconds (typically 0.5 seconds). During this time the yellow or red warning light
is switched to a solid light and any door-locking mechanisms attached remain activated.
Only at the end of this reheating period does the system switch to ‘Stand-by’ mode.
Make absolutely sure that nobody goes into the X-ray room before the end of the reheat-
ing period.

4.5 Operating modes
The adjustable parameters on the X- Keypad
ray control unit are kV, mA, focus size
and scan duration.
These parameters get entered by the
user as target values and after the
high voltage is switched on set, dis-
played and processed by the system.
The control unit facilitates different
kinds of target value input. These are

The control unit recognizes the following modes:
- Manual target value setting
- Tube conditioning
- Program operation
- Operation via serial interface
The mode is entered via the keypad.
The first digit is the mode ID. It can be entered whenever the mode button (Ctrl) is
pressed down. To enter the last two digits the mode button must be released again.
The mode entered gets displayed on the top line of text. It either defines the parameters
itself or enables their entry.

4.5.1 Manual operation

(Mode 000, 001, 002)


In this mode (00x) the kV, mA, focus size and scan duration parameters have to be en-
tered manually.

They are entered as follows: Display

The timer has a time range up to 99 minutes and 50 seconds. Beyond that the time
display gets switched to ‘--,--‘ (indefinite), i.e. the radiation period has no time limit.
For periods of under 10 minutes the time can be adjusted second by second.
For periods of 10 minutes or more the increments switch automatically to 10 se-
conds.

Tip: For entering kV, mA and Min via the keypad see section 4.3.1.

► Press the ‘Foc’ button to set the focus size.


Where tubes that are not grid controlled are being used, pressing the button
switches the focus size between small and large.
Where grid-controlled tubes are being used, the focus size can be altered by adjust-
ing the mA.

If the correct tube has been set, the system automatically keeps to its own and the
tube’s limits.

other system parts can be irreparably damaged by incorrect settings.

If you want to enter new values, the timer must be set in ‘Stand-by’ mode to ‘--.--’ (indefi-
nite). The stored time then gets cleared. It also gets cleared by re-entering the mode.

You can now select the voltage for which the tube is to be conditioned. The brighter number
shows the voltage for which the tube gets conditioned. By using the arrow buttons (‘4’ ()
and ‘6’ ()), you select between the three levels.
The conditioning voltage must be selected so that it is not less than the intended working
voltage.

The selected conditioning program

4.5.3 Program operation

The MGC41 control unit makes it possible to save recurring scan data as a ‘Program’ or
‘Technique’. Once saved to a memory location scan data remains always available.
When a program is launched, the saved data gets set again. This ensures that scans
are reproducible.
The 100 available memory locations (00 - 99) are supplied empty and can be individual-
ly used.

Note: The saved program is assigned to the attached high voltage generator and the
attached tube. The program can only be launched if both components have not been
changed.

The scan data save under this program number now gets displayed.
When the ‘Radiation ON’ button is pressed, the scan is then performed using the dis-
played data.
The kV, mA, focus size and scan duration selectors are out of use.
If a memory location is entered in which no program data is stored, the program display
clears again as soon as the second digit of the program number is entered.
If an incorrect entry is made (program number clears), the previously displayed kV, mA,
focus size and scan duration values continue to be shown.
The high voltage cannot be switched on.

4.5.4 Control via serial interface

(Mode 400 - 799)


In modes 400 and above the control unit can be remotely controlled from an external
computer via a serial interface. In order to achieve clean electrical isolation of the con-
trolling device, the signal transfer is done via optical fibers. Control via a sub-D plug is
also possible, although we can recommend this mode of operation only in exceptional
cases.
Modes 400 - 7xx are structured in the same way as modes 000 - 3xx.
In modes 400 and 401 the parameters can be entered individually.
In modes 501 - 503 the tubes get conditioned without any further target values being
entered.
Modes 6xx and 7xx are used for program operation.
Once the control unit is in mode 400 - 7xx, the system can be fully remote-controlled.
In order to switch the system on the mains switch must first be moved into the ‘’ posi-
tion and the ‘Radiation ON’ button must be pressed once.

Warning: The system can now be controlled remotely. To indicate this, ‘########’ ap-
pears on the display at the end of the second line. When pressing the ‘Radiation ON’
button and thereafter you must ensure that there is nobody within the area of potential
radiation. The radiation could potentially be switched on as the result of an individual
mistake. This period of particular attentiveness ends when the ‘Radiation OFF’ button is
pressed.

4.6.9 Delay after tube arcing (for MG605)

The MGC41 control unit (EPROM status 4512-113-2723X) offers the possibility after
any tube arcing of resetting the high voltage to the operating point almost immediately (t
= 2 seconds) or with a delay (max. t = 59 seconds) as per the current system setting. A
start delay gives the generator the opportunity to reduce the temperatures of electronic
components after tube arcing and the tube is able to improve the vacuum after such an
event.

Note: The system must be in ‘Stand-by’ mode (key-operated switch in the middle posi-
tion).

► The system must be put into mode ‘0’ by pressing the <Ctrl> and <0> keys simulta-
neously.
► Using the rotary switch, set the required delay (permitted range: 2 to 59 seconds).

Note: The minutes shown do not get taken into account. For very short delays it can be
necessary to set the time to over one minute.
(E.g. 01:01 for 1 second).

► Press <Ctrl> and <F1> simultaneously.


► Then press <9>.
 The currently programmed delay appears on the display (far right of the top line)
if it is more than 0 seconds.
► Press <3> again in order to save the new delay.

Note: Only the seconds shown get taken into account.

► Press the <F1> button.


 The control system is now back in ‘0’ mode.

4.7 Operating with range selector

The range selector is activated by entering mode 002 or 402.


The mode is entered via the keypad (see section 4.5). The MG 325 / MG 452’s system
data change when operating with the range selector as follows:

The values that can actually be set on the control unit depend on the tube attached and
the limit values.
The system fulfils the requirements pursuant to DIN EN 55011, class A.

Note: The range selector cannot be retrofitted on site. It must be fitted at one of Yxlon’s
facilities.

4.8 Fast voltage reduction

It is possible to reduce the high voltage by means of an external control signal:


if a signal of 8 - 25V is given onto the X12:6 contact of the MGC41 terminal block, the
high voltage drops down at maximum possible speed to a programmed level and after
the signal is removed climbs at maximum speed back up to the old level. During this
time the current does not get regulated. The heating current gets kept at the constant
level that would be required at full voltage to drive the tube current.
The high voltage reduction can also be controlled via the serial interface.

The level to which the voltage gets dropped is defined in program 99, i.e. the desired
level must be entered in advance into program place 99 (see program operation).
The current level entered does not get taken into account here!

4.9 Special features of the multi-generator system

With the multi-generator system it is possible to operate up to three generators (e.g.


power module, high voltage generator and tube) simultaneously.
The generator and the selected focus size must be the same.
General operation is similar to that of the standard single-generator system. The pa-
rameters of the individual generators are set as described below. For further differences
please refer to the distributor box’s extra information sheet. (Replacement for the high-
lighted section)

1. Select generator
► Press ‘Ctrl’ + ‘F3’
► Enter generator number (1, 2 or 3).
 The selected generator number gets shown on the display’s second line of text
on the right.

2. Parameters are set as usual:


► If generator 0 is selected, the parameters set apply for all generators.

If a generator is selected that is not connected, it is not possible to set any parameters
and ‘0000’ gets displayed for them all.

5 Trouble shooting
5.1 Operating problems and identifying faults
After any shut-off of the high voltage the reason for the shut-off is shown in plain text on
the second line of the display.
By pressing the F1 key the shut-off reasons get represented by two four-digit numbers,
marked ‘A’ and ‘B’. In normal situations only the first number should not equal zero, i.e.
indicate a shut-off reason. Only the shut-off reasons of the first number get shown as
text. The text output shows only one reason, while in the numeric code multiple reasons
can be output simultaneously.
The second fault number (marked ‘B’) is provided solely for technical support.

Note: Once code A is set to 8xxx, the high voltage can no longer be turned on. The
code can only be cleared down if the mains power is switched off. If after switching on
again the code reappears, there is a fault and technical support must be informed.

6 Maintenance
Like all technical devices, this system too needs to be operated properly and to be
regularly serviced and maintained. These precautions keep the system in good working
order and operationally safe.
This system contains mechanical components that are subject to operational wear.
In order to avoid any risk of injury to users caused by parts that are no longer safe, reg-
ular technical inspection and maintenance is required.
The correct adjustment of the electromechanical and electronic components in the sys-
tem has an influence on its functional capability, the achievable scan quality, electrical
safety and users’ exposure to radiation.
The necessary maintenance measures consist of inspections and checks of system
functions, which can be performed by the operating company (see table) and preventive
/ corrective maintenance jobs. The latter can be done within the scope of support ser-
vice contracts or on an on demand basis.
When replacing components that can have a direct or indirect influence on safety
and/or radiation protection, only original replacement parts may be used.
Yxlon International shall be responsible for the safety-related properties of the system
only if maintenance, upkeep and any changes are carried out by Yxlon International or
by individuals specifically authorized for such purpose.
Only properly trained maintenance personnel are authorized to take off the power mod-
ule’s covers and to remove the high-voltage cable from the X-ray emitter and high volt-
age generator.
We recommend taking out a support service contract. This ensures that all necessary
maintenance measures, including safety checks, in the sense of anticipatory protection
from risk and the required adjustments for optimum image quality with the lowest possi-
ble radiation exposure, are taken at regular intervals.

6.1 Working order check
The operating company must check the X-ray system for obvious defects in accordance
with the following table. If any defects in function or other deviations from normal oper-
ating characteristics arise, the company must switch off the device and inform customer
support. The device may not be used again until the fault has been rectified. Operating
the device with defective components can lead to an increased safety risk.

Note: The cooler slats through which there is a flow of ambient air must be checked
weekly and, if necessary, cleaned.
If the air is heavily polluted, the intervals can also be shorter.
An indication of the slats being dirty is a drop in cooling efficiency and thus the cutting
out of the X-ray system with the coolant at too high a temperature.

6.2 Maintenance jobs


Maintenance work is recommended as per the following table:
