Canterbury and Dunedin Tamil Society

come together for a fun weekend
¡¡ RIZWAN MOHAMMAD

T
he Canterbury and Dunedin Tamil Societies gathered its
community members from the two regions for a day of
fun and mingled on Saturday, September 22 at Ashbury
Park in Timaru in South Island.
The idea was generated two months ago when the two
community organisations started discussing a possibility of
getting together with their community members and share a day
doing fun activities, sports, food and music together at a location
suitable for both the organisations.
Members of both organisations came in buses and cars to the
Ashbury Park at around 10:30 a.m. and stayed there till 4:30 p.m.
The two community organisations also hosted a friendly 20-
20 cricket match at the Ashbury Park grounds with children and
members cheering for the teams as spectators. Dunedin Tamil
Society won the toss and decided to bat with the score of 116 runs
at the end of 20 overs. The Canterbury Tamil Society scored 119
runs at the end of the game and won the match. South Canterbury
Cricket Association Board supported the cricket tournament.
Members of the two organisations who are Tamil speaking and
have their descent from Singapore, India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia
brought speciality foods to share with each other. After the match
children, women and other members hosted different activities
such as antakshari, dumb charades, games, music, dance etc. to
engage and enjoy the day.
“I am glad that this picnic and get-together between the two
organisations separated by a region was a big success. We were
more than 100 people together, and everyone participated in
some game activity, dance, music and sports held at the venue,”
Secretary of Canterbury Tamil Society, Suren Sivalingam told
The Indian Weekender.
“We look forward to making this get-together an annual event
and also our rolling trophy cricket tournament- ‘United Trophy’
an integral part of the annual event,” Mr Sivalingam added.

T
he relationship between Peace and Diversity was
the topic chosen for this year’s Peace Symposium
organised by The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
New Zealand held on Saturday, September 22 at the
Fickling Community Centre, Three Kings in Auckland.
The Peace Symposium is an annual event by the
Ahmadiyya community hosted both in New Zealand and
internationally as a means to bring people together to
discuss issues relevant to the society, and to provide a forum
for an interfaith dialogue.
Michael Wood MP for Mt Roskill, and Parliamentary Under-
secretary to the Minister of Ethnic Affairs, was the chief
guest of the well-attended event. Other guest speakers
included Professor Edwina Pio, Director Diversity at Auckland
University of Technology (AUT), Dr Rob Kilpatrick, Director
of Traid mission and MD of Smallternative Trust, and Imam
Shafique-ur-Rehman, missionary in-charge of the Ahmadiyya
Muslim Community New Zealand.
Chief guest Michael Wood initiated the discussion
highlighting the positive role of an increasingly diverse New
Zealand population, and what the perceived threats to peace
may be present in the society. Quoting the example of the
recent visit to New Zealand of the far right speakers from
Canada, he lauded the united front presented by the New
Zealand people from across the spectrum against radical
views meant to generate hate and distrust in the society.
Prof Pio’s presentation centered on the women’s role as
peacemakers, while Dr Kilpatrick drew upon his experiences
from around the world on how important it is to work
actively towards achieving peace, and why violence can
never achieve lasting peace.
Imam Shafique ur Rehman presented the Islamic viewpoint
highlighting the early Islamic period as an example of how
governance can be kept separate from religion, yet allowing
the followers of all faiths to coexist peacefully.
The event was attended by approximately 150 guests,
who had the opportunity to ask the panel questions about
topical issues around peace and diversity. Notable attendees
included Minister of Housing & Urban Development and
Transport Phil Twyford, National MPs Melissa Lee and Dr
Parmjeet Parmar, and Deborah Russell from Labour Party.
In addition, representatives of New Zealand Police Ethnic
Liaison & neighbourhood office, Honorary Bangladesh
Counsel Shafiqur Rahman, and leaders of Jewish, Christian,
and Hindu faiths also attended the symposium.
The event concluded with a combined prayer and
commitment to work towards establishing a peaceful society.

The link between infrastructure and economic growth has long been recognised. In a recent New Zealand's first professional opera performance
