11  Symphonic  Band  Warm  Up  


 
Goals:  
Prepare  ensemble  for  performance.  Develop  technique  and  tone  through  warm-­‐up  
exercises.  Strengthen  ensemble  awareness.  
 
Long  tone  Exercise:  2  
-­‐ Functions  as  both  a  long-­‐tone  warm-­‐up  exercise  and  practice  in  hearing,  
playing,  and  half-­‐step  intervals  
 
*Remind  students  to  check  posture.  Stop  and  restart  Set  2  Option  3  until  entire  
ensemble  exhibits  good  posture.  
 
Set  2  Option  3    
-­‐ Woodwinds:  Chromatic  patterns  
-­‐ Brasses:  Lip  slur  
-­‐ Mallets:  Chromatic  patterns  
-­‐ Snares:  Rolls    
 
Set  4  Option  2  
-­‐ Instrument-­‐specific  warm-­‐ups  
o Flutes:  Harmonics  
o Clarinets:  Register  work  
o Saxes:  Octave  slur  
o Brasses:  Lip  slur  
o Mallets:  Intervals  
o Snares:  Paradiddles  
 
Scale  Degrees  
-­‐ Ensemble  plays  a  concert  F  
-­‐ Ensemble  hums  a  concert  F  
o Use  numbers  to  have  ensemble  move  throughout  the  scale  
§ Unison  motion  until  scale  degrees  are  comfortable  
§ Split  ensemble  in  half  and  have  them  practice  creating  and  
hearing  various  functional  intervals  
-­‐ Ensemble  plays  a  concert  F  
o Use  numbers  to  have  ensemble  move  throughout  the  scale  
§ Split  ensemble  in  half  and  have  them  practice  creating,  hearing,  
tuning  and  blending  various  functional  intervals  
§ Split  ensemble  into  three  groups  and  create  functional  
harmonies  for  the  ensemble  to  work  at  hearing,  tuning  and  
blending  
 
Tune  
-­‐ Play  a  tuning  F  (Ipod)  for  all  winds  except  Eb  saxophones.  Have  all  students  
hum,  sing,  then  play  and  tune  their  instruments.  
-­‐ Play  a  tuning  A  (Ipod)  for  Eb  saxes.
