Afternoon Peter,

I've looked into this now.

The article was published following a press release that was sent to us by the company, Dechoker. We also were also in
contact with the owners of the care home, Oakdale Care Group, at the time of the article.

The article was published in good faith and we have no reason to believe that the information contained in the article is
inaccurate.

I am not in a position at this stage to ask a reporter to try to contact Mr Kett's attending physician, any other licensed
professionals responsible for his care nor his legal guardian.

I will, however, with your permission, pass on your original email to me to both the company and the care home to ask for
their response to the issues you have raised.

With reference to calling my reporter, Carly Roberts, incompetent and requesting a capable reporter to take her place, I can
assure you that Carly is both competent and capable and has a great track record in producing exclusive stories and
successful campaigns.

As I said above, the article was published in good faith and there was no reason to doubt the veracity of what we had been
told.

This is clearly a field of specialism for you, however, and as I have said, I am more than happy to pass on your comments
for a response from the care home and the company involved. I will review any further action, once I have received a reply.

In relation to the article no longer appearing online, it is standard practice to remove articles, as a neutral act, while
investigations are carried out.

Kind regards,

David

David,

Thanks for your reply today and I look forward to the results of your inquiry.

In my opinion, the crucial sources to be interviewed are Bryan Kett's attending physician, any other licensed
professionals responsible for his care, and his legal guardian. For an item I was reporting for my blog, along
with other questions I wanted to obtain their names and contact information from Timkin Grange Home
manager who's quoted in Carly Roberts' 15 June 2018 article. Here's what happened when I tried

Curiously, since my previous e-mail to you today, the link to Ms. Roberts' article* no longer works
https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/northampton-care-home-staff-save-residents-life-after-
he-started-choking-1-8536207 That is, it now leads to the Chronicle & Echo's home page
https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/ Would you please also look into that and let me know what happened?

Mr Heimlich,

Unfortunately, I was unable to look at this at the end of last week and I was out of the office today.

I am, however, back in the office tomorrow morning and will be able to investigate the issues you are complaining of
and will respond by close of play tomorrow.

Kind regards,

David

Dear Mr. Summers:

I haven't received your reply to my 19 July e-mail (copied below my signature).

Ms. Roberts' article may violate Clause I (Accuracy) of IPSO's Editor's Code of Practice
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/#Accuracy therefore in the event I don't hear back
from you by the end of the day today (Monday), I plan to file a complaint with IPSO tomorrow
(Tuesday).

Thanks for your continued attention and I hope to hear from you. Since this concerns Carly Roberts'
reporting, I'm copying her on this.

Dear Mr. Summers:

Re: Northampton care home staff save residents' life after he started choking by staff reporter
Carly Roberts which your paper published on 15 June 2018:

An Airway Clearance Device (ACD) made by a Northampton-based business has helped
to save a second care home resident from choking to death.

Resident at Timken Grange care home in Duston, Bryan Kett, 87, was enjoying lunch
when he began to choke on a piece of food, which had become stuck in his airway.

Care staff immediately stepped in to assist, and when the obstruction proved firmly
stuck, they reached for their Dechoker. Within moments the piece of food had been
removed and the resident recovered almost immediately.

“Choking is responsible for around six care home deaths every month,” said Matt Oakley,
director at Dechoker UK. “We are both pleased and proud that once again Dechoker has
been shown to be effective in a choking emergency.”
Among other information missing from Ms. Roberts' poorly-reported article: the date of the alleged
incident and what type of food the victim allegedly choked on; the names of the alleged rescuers and
any eyewitnesses; quotes from the alleged rescuers, from Bryan Kett or from any members of his
family or his legal guardian; whether or not Mr. Kett received subsequent medical care and the
name of his attending physician; and no information about the case of the first care home patient
allegedly saved from choking to death by the device.

I've made best efforts to verify the above information, including: multiple inquiries to Ms. Roberts
(on which you were copied, see below my signature); inquiries to executives at Timken Grange and
to Matt Oakley.

No replies were received from Ms. Roberts or from the Timken Grange executives. Mr. Oakley
refused to provide any information about the reported incident and would not even provide me with
the name(s) of the Timken Grange employee(s) who informed him about the alleged incident.
Further, it's unclear if Mr. Oakley ever attempted to verify any of the facts or interviewed anyone
associated with the case.

Further, multiple attempts to contact Bryan Kett, members of his family, and his legal
representative were unsuccessful. Further, employees at Timken Grange would not even confirm
that they have a resident named Bryan Kett.

Long story short, I haven't been able to obtain any substantiating evidence that the incident your
paper reported took place. And based on Ms. Roberts' incompetent reporting, how can your readers
be certain that she didn't get punk'd?

Therefore this is to respectfully request that you assign a capable reporter to re-report the story and
instruct her/him to obtain the information I requested above and to provide me with the results.

Further a 30 August 2017 letter to representatives of the Dechoker from Graeme Tunbridge at the
Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued these recommended
guidelines for using the device:

We are therefore requesting that you take all reasonable steps to ensure that your device
should only be used in the following situations:

• By registered healthcare professionals or individuals with advanced life
support training, only if currently recognised basic life support protocols
have failed; or
• In situations where emergency services are unable to respond, for example
on aeroplanes or ships, only if currently recognised basic life support
protocols have failed; or
• On individuals in moulded wheelchairs, only if currently recognised basic
life support protocols have failed.

Taking this into account, we would request that you alter your instructions for use, as
well as any relevant supplementary marketing information to emphasise that your device
should only be used under these conditions.

Assuming the reported incident at Timken Grange is bona fide, there's is no indication whether or
not staff adhered to those recommendations. Therefore would you please ask your reporter to obtain
that information and let me know the results?

Thanks for your time/attention and I look forward to your reply. Would you please get back to me
with a quick note by end of the Monday 23 July to let me know how you intend to proceed? If I don't
hear from you by then, I'll assume you don't intend to respond or to address my concerns.

Sincerely,

Sorry, one more question, please.

5) Your article didn't report what sort of food the man was choking on -- what was that?

I'd appreciate your answers to some quick questions for a story I'm
researching/reporting.

1) Did you interview the pensioner, any members of his family and/or his legal
guardian?

2) What are the names of the care home staff who were involved in the reported
choking incident?

3) Did you interview the pensioner's attending physician?

4) You did not report the date or time of the incident -- when was that?

Thanks for your time/attention and I look forward to your reply.
