Christkindl Christmas post office
Since 1950 Christmas greetings can be sent via the Christkindl Christmas post office A-4411. In the early years its popular special postmark was stamped on 42,000 letters and postcards. The demand steadily increased and today 16 employees are needed to hand stamp the letters and cards arriving from all over the world. Last season, already 2 million letters were sent from the Christkindl post office at the Baumgartner Christkindl Inn.

Choose your ideal Christmas present among the opening day stamped
and decorative envelopes, special congratulatory cards and presents, maximum cards, balloon letters and Christkindl Church building stones that are offered for sale at the post office.

A specialty of the town of Steyr are the Old-timer Steyr 380q (mid 1950s model) and Steyr 480a post buses, which again this year will bring guests from Steyr to Christkindl, Garsten and Gleink. The travelling time in each case is 15 minutes. The chauffeurs, wearing traditional uniforms, will cancel your tickets with ticket punchers that are highly sought after collectors’ items. Both on arrival and departure the famous three tone bugle will sound. At the bus stop Town square/Marienkirche there is a letter box. Letters posted here will be forwarded via the Christkindl post office.

Christkindl pilgrimage church
In 1695 the seriously ill tower watchman and bandmaster Ferdinand Sertl placed a small wax figure of the Christ child into the hollow of a fir tree. Several times a week he returned to the place to pray. After he was cured of epilepsy, the place attracted so many pilgrims that it became necessary to build a church. It was given the name ”To the Christ child below the heavens”. The construction of the church was begun by Giovanni Battista Carlone in 1702. It was finished by Jakob Prandtauer between 1708 and 1725. The miracle-working figure is only a 10 cm tall standing wax figure of the Christ child holding a cross and a crown of thorns in its hands and is now housed in a little reliquary on the high altar above the globe-shaped tabernacle.

Steyr nativity scene in the Innerberger Stadl

2

The Steyr nativity scene is one of the last stick puppet theatres still performing
in the German language area. Since about 1850 two touring nativity scenes with numerous figures have travelled through the Steyr area performing theatre plays at inns. These two nativity scenes are thought to have merged later into the Steyr nativity scene. On the lower stage, which shows the Bethlehem stable, religious scenes are performed. On the central stage the stalls of craftsmen and traders are set up. The upper stage depicts the Christmas town Steyr in the Biedermeier period and is the setting for worldly happenings. Lamberg nativity figures in the Steyr Town Museum
The puppets from Count Lamberg’s collection were created between the baroque and Biedermeier periods. More than 200 of these figures have been set out on a large mountain. Adorned with gold and silver embroideries, the luxurious clothing of some of these figures recalls the handi-craft of convents. Most of these figures are thought to have once belonged to the churches’ grand nativity scenes.

Opening hours see Bethlehem nativity scene

3b Bethlehem nativity scene in the Steyr Town Museum

Steyr was given this nativity scene in 2001 upon the conclusion of its town partnership with Bethlehem. It is one of the largest representations ever carved from olive wood in Bethlehem. The stable alone weighs approx. 170 kg, the figures between 5-10 kg.

A replica of the star of Bethlehem, the original of which is found in the birth church of Bethlehem, was also a present from our partner town. The star symbolically recalls the birth of Jesus Christ.

Raft nativity scene

at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers
This wooden board nativity scene was erected on three connected rafts (5x3m each) by nativity scene maker Josef Seidl in 2004. The figures (up to 160 cm high) are painted on both sides and may be viewed both from the Enns and Steyr bridges. At night the floats are illuminated. The first raft shows the Angel of Annunciation together with shepherds and sheep in the field, the second the Holy Family and the third the Three Kings and a raftsman.

7

Nativity tree

in the Town square
Even before the Middle Ages, simple nativity trees and wooden board nativity scenes were arranged along the outer walls of churches. In this way people who were not allowed to enter the church could participate in the celebration and commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The Steyr nativity tree was created by the nativity scene maker Josef Seidl in cooperation with a club of nativity scene friends from Vorarlberg (1993/94).

Wooden board 8 nativity scene in the town hall courtyard
This wooden board nativity scene fea-turing three life-size groups of figures was specially designed and created by the nativity scene maker Josef Seidl in 2002 for the walls of the town hall courtyard.

Art and handicraft in the

Lamberg castle

Art and handicrafts in the exclusive, festive atmosphere of the Christmas exhibition at the Lamberg Castle in Steyr to take place for the twentieth time this year. Its enchanting flair will put you in the mood for Christmas and be remem-bered for a long time afterwards.

The goods offered for sale at this exclusive Christmas exhibition
range from artistic Christmas decorations, wrought iron art, choice leatherware, elaborately painted ceramics and porcelain to extravagant hats, designer jewellery, box and carton nativity scenes. However, it is not only because of this wide variety of handicraft works that the Christmas exhibition in the Lamberg castle stands out among the other Advent markets. The lovely decorated booths of the approx. 30 artists also ensure that the exhibition in the castle gallery will be a unique experience. Most of the artists have received sound training e.g. at Secondary Technical Schools, technical colleges or art colleges.

Steyr Christkindl
In the Christkindl town of Steyr, the Christkindl was brought to life for the first time last year. On weekdays during the Advent season the Christkindl welcomes Steyr's guests, recites the Christkindl prologue and entertains the children with fairy tales. The design, style and silver metal thread embroidery of the Christkindl's lavish costume is modelled on the baroque Lambert nativity scene figurine of the Annunciation angel. The master seamstress Waltraud Musenbichler made the costume from 196.5 metres of material and laces adorning it with an additional 540 coloured crystal Swarovski stones.

Garstner Advent

in the “Platzl”

26 27

The 32nd Garstner Advent takes place in an idyllic atmosphere in the square in front of the baroque collegiate church. Unadulterated customs, local handicrafts and exhibitions of high quality make the Garstner Advent market a special experience for all visitors, whether from Austria or abroad. We offer a guided tour on request.

• The stands offer a great variety of local food and traditional presents. In the Platzl the visitor can also watch the artisans at work: carpenters, nail blacksmiths, ceramist, art metal worker. • The handicraft exhibition in the elementary school displays a wide range of handicrafts and offers exquisite gift choices. Here as well, you can watch the artisans “over their shoulders”. • The nativity scene exhibition in the baroque halls of the former collegiate prelacy presents old and new nail maker nativity scenes of special quality. On display are also a large mechanical landscape nativity scene with 25 movable scenes as well as the most beautiful nativity scenes built by participants of nativity scene building courses held at the Garsten “Krippenschule” (Nativity Scene School). • The local Raiffeisen bank presents the exhibition „Keltendorf Mitterkirchen“.

Musical and literary programme
The Hubertus mass in the collegiate church, pastoral plays and trumpet concerts played from the tower are as much a part of the Advent market in Garsten as St. Nicholas's visit and the old-time bus to Steyr (see p. 6). We recommend planning a minimum of 1 1/2 hours to visit all the exhibitions.

Museumsbahn

The Steyrtal historical museum railway is Austria’s oldest narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 760 mm. It has been on the tracks for more than 100 years and thanks to the loving care of the ÖGEG the train is still travelling the 17 km long route between Steyr and Grünburg. In the Advent season the historical museum railway travels along the Steyr river through romantic meadowland to the Steinbacher Advent and back to the Christmas town.
