Power drive
• Millions of homes still lack this vital
resource in India.

• April 1, 2015: un-electrified villages

18,452

• It is an achievement that will raise

aspirations in the remotest districts.

• Severe disparities, including the actual

number of households in villages that have
power connections, the number of hours
they get reliable power, and the per
capita power that rural and urban Indians
consume.
• Definition: 10% of households and common
facilities such as schools, panchayats and
health centres.

• Rural household electrification has a wide

range across States, from 47% to 100%.

• The average hours of power supplied in a

day to rural areas in January 2018 ranged
from 11.5 in Mizoram, 14.91 in Haryana
and 17.72 in Uttar Pradesh to 24 hours in
Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

• Power for All 24x7: deadline of April 1,

2019
• Theft, damage and lack of technical
capacity can pose serious hurdles.

• The answer may lie in a hybrid solution

that ensures continued scaling up of both
grid-connected and standalone solar
systems in appropriate areas, augmenting
conventional sources of electricity, with a
clear emphasis on rooftop solutions for
cities.

Netanyahu’s theatrical pitch
• Mr. Netanyahu: documents from a secret
facility in Iran which “conclusively prove
that Iran was brazenly lying when it said it
never had a nuclear weapons
programme”.

• 2 weeks to go for JCPOA’s renewal by USA

• The International Atomic Energy Agency

(IAEA), amply supplied by the intelligence
agencies of the U.S., Israel and Europe,
was able to develop a remarkably detailed
picture of these illicit activities.
•-
• If the U.S. walks away from its
commitments on May 12, Iran would be
free to reinstall advanced centrifuges,
pile up enriched uranium, and revert to
less intrusive inspections.

• The international community would have

fewer opportunities to clarify its
understanding of the weapons programme
described in these documents, ultimately
increasing the risk of on-going or future
deception.
Fake and frightening
• Fake news has wreaked damage several
times over the last few years.

• It has whipped up communal frenzy.

• Rana Ayyub case: Ms. Ayyub, a freelance

journalist and author of Gujarat Files, a
book about the 2002 riots

• Registered a police complaint in Delhi

about personalised fake news that put her
in danger.

• Death & rape threats

• This is a potential threat to anybody who
has an online presence.

• It has been proven that false news spreads

faster and farther than real news.

• The damage to one’s reputation is

immediate and impossible to completely
reverse.

• Since this is a problem created by

technology, its solution too lies in
technology.
The rocky road to 2019
• The authorities need to analyse why
simultaneous upheavals are taking place
on different planes across the country.

• Jammu and Kashmir: increase in

casualties, of civilians and security
personnel, an upsurge in terrorist
violence, a rise in cross-border terrorism
and increased infiltration from Pakistan.

• As an ideology-based militant movement,

Maoism needs to be countered by a
sustained ideological campaign in rural
and urban areas, but this is nowhere in
evidence.
• Next is the growing spectre of agrarian
unrest.

• Bharat Bandh: Dalit protest

• Rape cases

• A disruption of parliamentary proceedings

is not new, but the near total washout of
the Budget session has shaken the faith of
the nation.

• What the nation is demanding is a

resolution of the impasse, and not the
assigning of blame.
Nicaragua rocked
• The public protests were triggered by the
government’s decision to simultaneously
raise individual contributions and reduce
social welfare benefits and pensions.

• Leaders in various Latin American states

have made it a habit to prolong their
tenures by curtailing political freedoms.
