LITERACY NEWS + ANNOUNCEMENTS:
LITERACY

Last week, we kicked off our class novel, T he Lightning Thief, with a spirited read-aloud and close reading
activity. This week, the sixth-grade students have been reading T he Lightning Thief for homework. Students are
welcome to listen to the audiobook version of the novel, if needed. There is, however, *ONE RULE*: Students
who listen to the audiobook MUST read along in their book along with the audio version. I have posted links to a
YouTube Channel that has audiobook versions of each of the book chapters on the Google Classroom as well as on
the STUDENT LINKS AND RESOURCES page on my classroom website (mshenry205.weebly.com).
Please make sure your child is caught up with their reading as they will be taking a quiz over Chapters 1-6 this
coming Tuesday (10/9).

Additionally, this week we are wrapping up our first Writing Project -- IDENTITY POEMS! The sixth-grade
students have spent the first few weeks of school participating in discussions about IDENTITY as well as
completing a variety of writing brainstorm and mining activities designed to help them think deeply and
critically about who they are and what things they treasure and value. The students analyzed various poems and
discussed how figurative language and sensory details can make poetry and writing come alive.

COMING UP:
Continuing T he Lightning Thief...Mythology...The Hero’s Journey Archetype...Personal Narratives
