Year Six pupil Hasan has turned part-time petty businessman, selling home-grown
mangoes. He is rushing to raise enough money to have satellite television installed in his house.
The enterprising twelve-years-old can be seen very afternoon along the trunk road near Kampung
Serian here, tirelessly trying to get attention from motorist passing by.
Those who stop will be met with some persuasive salesmanship. The moment potential
customers slight from their vehicles, they are greeted with a broad grin and an opening offer of
RM 1 for a fruit. But, when serious bargaining begins, Hasan quickly brings down the price to an
irritable “eight fruits for RM10”.
The project took off six month ago, with the fruit grown in an empty lot behind his house
in the village. They are transported in a wheelbarrow to the trunk road 1 km away. He takes in
about RM20 to RM60 a day. ‘I divide the profits with my mother and save my share to install
satellite television. My neighbour is always boasting about Perry the Platypus series and I am also
curious about the cartoon character’, he said.
Hasan, the youngest of three siblings, is optimistic that the system will be in place soon
because of the brisk sales he is enjoying. His mother who sells nasi lemak nearby said her son was
keen to install the satellite television even though she told him that they could not afford it. “But I
see his passion, and promised to pay the subscription fee using the money from the sale, so I
decided to let him go on with it,” she said.
