Method Filename G-Series Single Direction Wear Test with Lateral Force Measurement
Method Part Number
Intended Function This method prescribes a constant load wear test along a single track and in only one direction. The
test records the residual deformation of the wear track while returning to the origin of the wear track
in preparation for the next cycle. A maximum of 99 cycles can be completed using this test method.

Intended Hardware NanoSuite 4.20, XP head

Intended Samples Bulk materials, most thin films and small volumes. Metals, glasses, ceramics, with melting/glass
transition temperature well above room temperature.

Chronological Test Flow The indenter tip begins approaching the surface from a distance above the surface of approximately
Surface Approach Distance . The approach velocity is determined by Surface Approach Velocity .
When the indenter determines that it has contacted the test surface, according to the criteria Surface
Approach Sensitivity , the indenter is loaded until the Load On Sample exceeds the Profiling Load.
An original surface topography scan is performed over the entire wear track. When the indenter
returns to the origin after performing the scan, a pre-profile is performed up to the scratch postion;
the pre-profile is used to level all scratch cycles.
The indenter is loaded to the Wear Load. Then, the stages are translated in the pass direction over the
wear distance. The load is reduced to the profiling load and a post profile is completed; this post
profile is also used for leveling the wear data. Following the post profile, the indenter is moved to the
origin of the wear track at the profiling load and the residual topography of the wear track is
recorded. This wear and profile process is repeated for the specified Number of Wear Cycles. After
the completion of the wear cycles a cross profile is performed (if selected). Finally, the indenter is
then withdrawn from the sample completely and the sample is moved into position for the next test.

Default Review Graph (Cycles) Wear Track Deformation vs. Completed Number of Cycles
Required and Editable Post-Test When setting up a batch of samples using the method, the Assistant helps the user specify the
Inputs Required Inputs. The complete list of either Required Inputs or Editable Post-Test Inputs may be
displayed by right-clicking in the panel to the right of the graph on the Review Page. When in
individual-mode, the description for any input may be displayed by going to the Configuration tab on
the Define Page, clicking on the “Input” folder, clicking on the input of interest, and hitting the
Description tab.

Channels Each channel is a single-dimensional array of size M, where M is the number of data points acquired
during a single test. Any channel may be plotted on either the Real-Time Graph or the Review Graph.
A complete list of channels calculated by this method may be displayed by right-clicking in the panel
to the right of the graph on the Review Page. When in single-mode, the description for any channel
may be displayed by going to the Configuration tab on the Define Page, clicking on the “Channel”
folder, clicking on the channel of interest, and hitting the Description tab.

Results Results differ from channels in that they are single-valued. Results for each individual test are
presented in the Statistics Panel at the bottom of the Review Page. A complete list of results
calculated by this method may be displayed by right-clicking in the panel to the right of the graph on
the Review Page. When in single-mode, the description of any result may be displayed by going to
the Configuration tab on the Define Page, clicking on the “Formulas” folder, clicking on the formula
with the same name as the result of interest, and hitting the Description tab. (Note: within the
“Formulas” folder, you will see many more formulas than those included on the Results Page. These
formulas are used in the control of test flow and in the calculation of channels and final results. You
may view their definitions in the same way.)

Miscellaneous Notes The most important channels for this method are Load on Sample , Displacement into Surface,
Displacement into Surface - Return, Lateral Force on Sample, Lateral Force on Sample - Return,
Coefficient of Friction, Coefficient of Friction - Return, Scratch Distance, Cross Profile
The wear track deformation is calculated as the area between the original surface profile and the
current cycle's Displacement into Surface during the pass at the wear load..
