General Module Information
Course (Module): Water Supply and Sewerage
Module Conveyor: Mariwan Mirhaj M.Salih

Course Symbol: WSS5128

Academic Year (Level): 4th Academic year

Target Students: 4th year students in Civil Engineering Department

Taught Semesters: Full year

This course will make the civil engineer familiar to understand some fundamental principles
about water Supply and Sewerage. This is evident by sound engineering though and practice in
the solution of problem of Sewerage and water supply, the proper methods for providing of,
drinking water through different sources and using different technologies to water treatment to
reduce for providing the water for different purposes in human life and solve the wastewater
issues by sewerage . The goal is to supply the water to residence and industry sectors and
solve the wastewater issues by sewerage .This Course consists of 30 lectures; each lecture is of
3 hours duration, 2 lecture/ week and 1 hr. Lab.
Method and Frequency of Class:
activity Number Of Weeks Number of sessions Duration of a session

Lecture (Theory ) 30 weeks 1 per week 2 hours

Lecture (Tutorial) 30 weeks 1 per week 1 hour
Lecture (Practical) 30 weeks 1 per week 1 hour
Lectures will take place every teaching week of the year. The lectures will be given through Slide-
Show, white board, figures, equations and short videos. The hand-outs will be given to student (will
be sheared with students) through University’s Web-site before every lectures.

Method of Assessment:
During the academic year, there are two central exams, first on end of January and second on
the latest of April, also Course Work, The 3 to 4 quizzes may be taken for each Semester.
(40% of the final exam degree). The lab. Practise will take place in lab GL6. The students
have to write a report for each practical section with practise test in end each semester this will
be weighed about 10%.
Each (Semester) monthly exam will consist of 3 to 4 main questions and the allowed time for
each exam about 90 minutes and Final examination (first and second trial) will consist of 4 to
5 questions and allowed time for answer is about 180 minutes. (40% of the final exam degree).
Assessment Type Weight Requirements

Spring Semester Exam 20% 1.5 hrs. examination
Report + particles test Spring 10% written report + particles test Autumn
Final Exam 40% 3 hrs. examination

Summary of Content:
This module introduces the fundamentals of water Supply and Sewerage. The module will be
dividing into a list of the lectures. It will start with water demand and population Forecasting,
This will be provided the information about amount of needed water for human and
industry actives. The next lectures will be the water quality and water treatment.
Then, the network pipe design will give the knowledge about the types and
requirements to make a new network pipe line. The last lectures will be Sewerage

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this module, Students should be able to:

1. Understanding the main fundamental concepts water Supply and Sewerage.

2. Understanding amount of water needed to human activities.
3. Explain types of water pollution and methods of water treatments.
4. Understanding methods and practiseof Pipe Network Design and sewerage design.
