Silicone for Two Part RTV Formulations

Factors Harmful To Curing

Inhibition

Certain materials can cause the Vinyl Silicone Polymers not to react with the SiH Crosslinkers in the presence of platinum catalysts. These are amines, heavy metals & organo-tin compounds. In addition, various other materials such as latex gloves, the adhesive on duct tape, phosphous containing plasticizers and other materials

SiH Rations

The curing of Two-Part Addition-Curing RTV’s will become tacky with too much SiH Crosslinker. Too low a level of SiH to vinyl content will produce a soft material.

Room Temperature Curing (RTV)

When curing these formulations and systems, it usually requires a full day or two for the material to reach full cure without applying any heat. Initial cure will increase in hardness with a day or two aging.

Formulation Variations

Increase In Polymer Viscosity

Formulating or using higher molecular weight vinyl polymers will improve the elongation and tear strength when thoroughly mixed with reinforcing fillers.

Mixing The Formulation

It is essential and very important to obtain a very good and a well dispersed mix to realize the optimum properties of the formulation. Poor mixing will result in clumps and small dry areas within the mix.

Residual Silanol Levels

This is a critical characteristic of the vinyl polymer. Too high a level (over 400/500 ppm silanol) will result in viscosity build with time and also cause a reaction with the SiH Crosslinker upon prolonged storage and thereby, reduce the correct ratio of vinyl to SiH.

Crosslinking Density

Increased levels of crosslinking increase the hardness, but reduce the flexibility. This can result in too brittle a material. However, increases in crosslinking is sometimes beneficial to physical properties such as Tensile & Tear.
