1.0 DEFINITIONS

1.1. “COMPANY” shall mean BP or their authorised representatives.

1.2. “CONTRACTOR” refers to the party to whom the contract for the
WORK herein described has been awarded, and any of its authorised
representatives and sub-CONTRACTORs.

1.3. "WORK" means all the technical services and responsibilities to be


performed by CONTRACTOR as specified, stated, indicated or implied
in this contract, including the furnishing and supervision of all personnel
and the supply of all equipment, materials and supplies necessary or
required.

2.0 SUMMARY

2.1. This specification includes the requirements for conducting field


investigation and laboratory testing for producing geotechnical
engineering reports in support of the design and construction of the
facilities of the BTC Pipeline Project.

2.2. The scope of WORK and data requirements for the WORKs covered in
this specification are included in the Document Number 020-3SW-
CY05-00001 Project Scope Geotechnical Investigation. This
specification establishes the technical requirements for conducting the
field investigations, laboratory testing and data reporting.

3.0 CODES AND STANDARDS

3.1. Unless otherwise specified or shown, the latest edition at the time of
bid of the following Codes and Standards shall apply to the extent
indicated herein:

3.2. British Standards shall take precedence, where there are two similar
specifications for the same test. Where no British Standard exists the
relevant ASTM specification shall apply. Alternative specifications can
be proposed and may be adopted, subject to the COMPANY’s prior
approval.

4.0 SUBMITTALS WITH BID

The CONTRACTOR shall submit with their bid the following documents
for the COMPANY review and approval prior to award of this contract:

4.1. Work Plan

To include:
Description of the scope of the WORK
Descriptions of field procedures, methods and standards
Proposed communication system to be used, including back up
systems
Method of water depth measurement
Proposed manpower, geotechnical personnel, and crews to
satisfactorily perform the WORK
Qualifications and CVs of all personnel assigned to perform the
WORK
List of proposed drilling machinery, all field and testing
equipment, accessories and materials including all supplies
List of proposed laboratory testing equipment in the field
Proposed schedule for subsurface investigation.

4.2. Health and Safety Plan

This shall meet or exceed national and local regulations and shall include, but
not be limited to, the following:

Measures for ensuring employee and public safety


Compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to safety
procedures
Provisions for first aid facilities and supplies.

4.3. Documented Quality Assurance/Control Program,

This shall be applicable to the services to be performed in the field by the


CONTRACTOR, which shall include, but not necessarily be limited to:

A programme plan covering all CONTRACTOR's tasks


An organisation chart including Project task assignments
Qualification of personnel
Procedures for identification, control and storage of Project
documents, records and storage and shipping of samples
Calibration procedures and records of test equipment such as
field vane shear tests
Use of procedures and test methods conforming to applicable
standards and specifications
Procedures for providing applicable quality assurance/control
requirements to subordinate organisations performing any
portion of this Contract.

5.0 SUBMITTALS DURING FIELDWORK

The CONTRACTOR shall submit the following documents during


execution of the field investigation:

5.1. Daily reports, summarising pertinent field activities including date,


equipment and personnel on site, location, type and quantities of work,
and weather

5.2. Field data reports, submitted daily, to include:

Drilling logs for all completed boreholes


Records of field vane shear, torvane and pocket penetrometer
test results
Electrical and thermal resistivity test results
Results of testing undertaken in the field.

6.0 SUBMITTALS AFTER COMPLETION OF FIELDWORK

The contractor shall submit the following documents after completion of


fieldwork:

6.1. Draft and final geotechnical engineering reports for the site that
satisfies the requirements in the following paragraphs.

7.0 TECHNICAL CONDITIONS AT SITE

7.1. All site work shall be conducted under the direct supervision of a
suitably qualified and experienced soils engineer whose career resume
is to be submitted for approval. The CONTRACTOR’s engineer shall
report to the CONTRACTOR site representative directly with regard to
progress, problems and other similar items, all confirmed in daily and
weekly progress reports together with any preliminary results obtained.

8.0 ENVIRONMENT

8.1. The CONTRACTOR shall adhere to the applicable national


environmental laws and regulations and the COMPANY’s requirements
in this concern.

8.2. The CONTRACTOR shall exert his best effort to minimise the adverse
environmental impacts of his activities at site including, but not limited
to, the following:

a) Reducing harmful discharge to water and land.


b) Improving the use and consumption of natural resources.
c) Avoiding unnecessary changes to landscape and green
plants.

8.3. The CONTRACTOR site representative shall be qualified and


authorised to handle the environmental requirements of the national
law and regulations, COMPANY instructions and requirements.

8.4. If the CONTRACTOR, during the site execution of WORK, violates any
of the environmental requirements, the COMPANY’s representative
shall have the right to stop the activity until CONTRACTOR takes the
necessary corrective actions.

8.5. The CONTRACTOR shall only use reliable and well-maintained


equipment for the investigation. The CONTRACTOR shall maintain at
site sufficient spare parts and other consumables to ensure the
uninterrupted performance of the boreholes and the field tests.

8.6. The grade level and final co-ordinate location of all boreholes and trial
pits and other similar items shall be determined by the CONTRACTOR.

9.0 SOIL BORING AND TRIAL PITS

9.1. A site exploration shall be made to determine the surface and the
subsurface soil conditions and to obtain the data required by
subsequent paragraphs. Sufficient borings will be made to give a
reliable picture of the subsurface conditions.

9.2. Boreholes shall be of minimum diameter of 150mm and to the depths


indicated on the Borehole and Trial Pit Location Plans. Where rotary
core is required this shall be of 70mm minimum diameter

9.3. Standard Penetration Tests and Undisturbed samples shall be taken at


suitable frequencies, from each boring for laboratory testing.

9.4. Trial pits shall be excavated by mechanical excavator to a depth of 3


metres. Samples of soil shall be obtained of each stratum for testing.
Groundwater ingress shall be recorded.

9.5. The CONTRACTOR’s engineer or technician shall examine and


classify the soils in the field. The soils strength of cohesive deposits
shall be detemined in the field by field vane, torvane or hand
penetrometer. The soil samples shall be further examined and tested
in the laboratory.

9.6. A log of each borehole and trial pit shall be made.

9.7. After fieldwork is completed all boreholes and test pits shall be
backfilled with compacted soil.

10.0 BOREHOLE AND TRIAL PIT SAMPLING

10.1. Undisturbed samples shall be taken at 1m centres should clay, silt or


peat deposits or materials with a significant clay content be
encountered.

10.2. Standard Penetration Tests are required in all boreholes up to a depth


of 10m at 1m intervals, then at 1.5m intervals to the base of the
borehole.

10.3. Disturbed samples shall be taken at each change in strata or at every


2m depth of borehole, whichever is the lesser.

10.4. Samples of groundwater shall be taken when encountered within the


borehole/trial pit

11.0 LABORATORY TESTS

11.1. Laboratory tests shall be made on the soil samples to determine their
character and properties as required. In general, the laboratory
investigation shall include the tests listed below. It is the responsibility
of the CONTRACTOR to recommend alternative or additional testing if
he thinks they are needed. The tests shall follow British Standard or
ASTM methods where applicable.

Particle size analysis


Dry Density
Specific Gravity tests
Compaction/Optimum Moisture Content tests
Organic matter content
Atterberg limits (LL, PL, PI)
Water content
pH of soil and water
Sulphate, chloride, magnesium and carbonate content of
soil and water samples
Sulphate reducing bacteria
Unconfined compressive strength
Triaxial tests (undrained and effective stress)
Direct shear tests
Consolidation tests on cohesive soils

11.2. Laboratory tests shall be undertaken on samples taken from the


boreholes. The CONTRACTOR shall draw up test schedules as the
fieldwork proceeds and submitted for approval to the COMPANY, prior
to the commencement of testing.

12.0 CATHODIC PROTECTION SURVEY

12.1. General

12.1.1. The number of points to be measured are shown on the


Borehole Location Plans, and are subject to the CONTRACTOR
confirming that these points will give representative results for
the assigned area(s).

12.1.2. A complete description of the methods and equations used,


locations of measure points at plot plan, test results and average
values of the thermal resistivity, electrical resistivity and ground
temperature shall be included.

12.2. Electrical Resistivity

12.2.3. For each type of soil, readings should be taken in at least the
two locations shown on the Borehole Location Drawings. As a
minimum readings shall be taken at depths of at 1.5, 3, 5, 7 &
10m using the Wenner terminal resistivity method (Wenner –
ASTM G57)

12.2.4. Soil analysis to determine chloride levels, pH at the following


depths 1, 3, 5, 7 & 10m, based on one representative sample for
each of these depths, taken from an adjacent borehole.

12.3. Thermal Resistivity.

12.3.1. The soil thermal resistivity shall be determined by the Transient


Needle method or the Heated Buried Sphere method. For each
test point the soil shall be investigated at 0.5 and 2 m below
grade.

12.3.2. If values read on the instrument at a given point differ by more


than 50% of the values measured at the previous point, an
intermediate measurement shall be made and indicated on the
plot plan.

12.3.3. Ground temperature shall be measured at a depth of 1m.

13.0 HYDROGEOLOGICAL SURVEY

13.1. The CONTRACTOR shall carry out a desk study on the regional and
local geological conditions and the potential for groundwater
exploitation.

13.2. The CONTRACTOR shall construct an exploratory borehole to an


anticipated maximum depth of 100m and to a minimum diameter of
100mm at the base. The purpose of this borehole is to determine the
geological conditions with particular reference to the use of
groundwater as an exploitable resource.

13.3. The CONTRACTOR shall propose a drilling technique best suited to


obtain good quality samples of soil and water from the borehole.

13.4. The CONTRACTOR shall collect, examine, analyse soil and rock
samples and shall produce a borehole log for the

13.5. The Contractor shall record water entry and take samples of water as
encountered in the borehole at appropriate depths. Field analysis of
the water quality in terms of temperature, pH value, conductivity and
analysis of the chlorine content by the Mohr method.

13.6. The CONTRACTOR shall undertake Water “Potability” tests including

- major constituents of parameters :pH, Tds, conductivity, HCO3, CO3, Cl,


SO4, NO4, F, PO4, Ca, Mg, K, NH4, Fe.

- trace elements Al, Ag, B, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Pb, SiO2, Sr, Zn.

14.0 FIELD REPORTS

14.1. A draft copy of the borehole/trial pit/field test logs shall be submitted to
the COMPANY within 5 days of completion of each borehole/trial
pit/field test.

14.2. The borehole/ trial pit record shall include as a minimum the following
information.

Name of driller and soils engineer or technician.


Date boring or pit excavation was made.
Proper identification of the project and boring or pit.
Location of boring or excavation based on established plant co-
ordinate system and the orientation of trenches.
Ground surface elevation based on established plant datum.
Depth at which major changes in the character of the soil take place
including the surface of bedrock if encountered.
A detailed description of the soil in each major stratum utilising the
Unified Soil Classification System.
Penetration resistance of the sampler or an estimate of the
consistency of the soil in situ or both.
Numbers of the samples, type of sample (disturbed or undisturbed)
and the depths from which they are taken.
Any obstructions and difficulties encountered.
Depths, time, borehole and casing level at which a loss or inflow of
water into the borehole or pit occurs.
Depth to free ground water level.
For borings, the diameter and method of casing and advancing the
borehole.
The type and diameter of the sampler.
Description of the method used to force the sampler into soil.
Details of drilling fluids.

14.3. The CONTRACTOR shall provide the COMPANY with daily and weekly
progress reports during the course of the WORK.

15.0 COMPLETION REPORTS

The CONTRACTOR shall submit three separate report volumes for


each site investigated.

The reports are as follows:

a) Geotechnical Survey Report

b) Cathodic Protection Survey Report

c) Hydrogeological Report

16.0 FORMAT OF REPORTS

16.1. A Draft Report shall be submitted as 2 No Print copies and 2 No CD


copies as follows:

Text files as Microsoft Word documents (*.doc) and Excel


spreadsheets (*.xls).
Charts and drawings as Microstation (*.dgn) or AutoCad (*.dwg) or
*.dxf files.
Complete report as a *.pdf file.
Field and Laboratory information should also be presented in AGS
format.

16.2. The draft reports shall be issued within five days of completion of
laboratory testing (where applicable) for COMPANY approval and shall
contain all details requested in Report Contents.

16.3. The Final Reports shall be submitted as 4 No Print copies and 2 No CD


copies as follows:

Text files as Microsoft Word documents (*.doc) and Excel


spreadsheets (*.xls).
Charts and drawings as Microstation (*.dgn) or AutoCad (*.dwg) or
*.dxf files.
Complete report as a *.pdf file.
Field and Laboratory information should also be presented in AGS
format

16.4. The Final Reports shall be issued for review within two weeks of
completion of all laboratory tests, after approval and/or comment on the
draft reports by the COMPANY.

17.0 GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY REPORT CONTENTS

17.1. The report shall describe the site conditions, the nature of the soil
deposits, the general geology of the area, and recent history of
excavation, fill, flooding and the like. It shall include the information
and recommendations listed under Report Contents listed below, plus
such other data and recommendation as are pertinent. All
recommended allowable soil bearing or load capacity values shall be
given for working or service loads. In each instance, the factor of
safety and/or settlement value used in determining these
recommended capacities shall be stated in the report, together with all
the procedures used in their determination. All design values and
measurements shall be reported in metric units. The report shall
include the items listed below under their respective headings:

17.2. Field and Laboratory Work

A general description of the fieldwork.


A description of each type of laboratory test and what
the test was used for.
Results of tests conducted, including explanations and
analysis.
17.3. General Soils Data

Boring and excavation plan. The plan shall show


where the sections requested below were cut.
Sectional plots of north-south and east-west soil
profiles. The profiles should show logs of borings, soil
types and the approximate water table, and should be
complete enough so that structural engineers can
evaluate the subsurface soils conditions at the
location of each major foundation.
Depth and estimated fluctuations of water table.
Seismicity site classification according to the
International Building Code 2000 (ref. IBC-2000
section 1615.1.1 “Site class definition”).
The potential for liquefaction under seismic or other
loads.
Chemical condition of the soil that may affect
construction materials. Recommended type of
cement for underground concrete WORK.
Expansive characteristics of the soils with change in
water content.

Indicate the possible swell that may be experienced if
soils compacted at or near optimum water content
absorb additional water in stabilising to a new ambient
condition.
Specific gravity.
Angles of internal friction and cohesion values.
Coefficient of sliding for concrete on soil.
Active, passive and at rest soil pressure coefficients.

17.4. Foundation Design Data

The CONTRACTOR shall specify the most economical type of


foundations to be used (Shallow spread footings, concrete piers, soil
replacement, mats or rafts, piles, dynamic consolidation or vibro-
compaction for soil improvement, examples of determining net solid
bearing capacity and other similar items) for each of the following
groups of foundations.

17.4.1. Equipment Foundations

Allowable net soil bearings versus foundation width


and depth for gravity loads.
Allowable net soil bearings for temporary loads due to
wind and/or seismic forces.
Expected value and time of settlement under
foundation.
For Foundations with Vibratory loads:
Allowable net soil bearing for gravity loads with long
term vibration.

17.4.2. Mainline Pump and Turbine Foundations

The CONTRACTOR shall advise on the foundations for the mainline pumps
and turbines. If spread footings are acceptable, the following dynamic soil
properties, expressed where possible as functions of depth and/or confining
pressure, shall be determined.

PROJECT SPECIFICATION: GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION
If the CONTRACTOR recommends the use of a piled foundation, then the
CONTRACTOR shall include vertical and lateral load deflection data for the
recommended pile type.

17.4.3. Storage Tank Foundations: (Steel tanks on granular pads)

The tank dimensions are as given on the Borehole


and Trial Pit Location Plans.
Allowable net soil bearing for gravity loads.
Values and time of settlement under centre and edge
of tanks.
Recommended depth of concrete edge ring beams (if
any).
17.4.4. Building Foundations:

Allowable net soil bearing for gravity loads at different


foundation depth versus width of foundation.
Foundations supporting small loads (pipe supports,
small pumps, sleepers etc.) that may be supported on
grade slabs or concrete paving.
17.4.5. Foundation for Steel Structures:

Allowable net bearing capacity versus depth and width


of foundations.
Expected total and differential settlement.
If pile or drilled foundations are recommended, the
CONTRACTOR shall specify the type, diameter,
vertical and horizontal load carrying capacity and the
expected length of piles for each of the
abovementioned groups of foundations.
If soil replacement is recommended, the
CONTRACTOR shall specify areas and depths of soil
to be replaced and recommended replacement
material whether onsite or outside specified material.
He shall recommend the procedure and degree of
compaction.

17.5. Earthwork and Grade Level Design Data and Construction


Recommendations

17.5.1. General

State whether onsite materials are suitable for


common fill.

Recommend the maximum acceptable deviation from
optimum moisture content that should be allowed at
the time of compact. Outline any special procedures
that may be required to obtain proper compaction.
Recommend procedure for removing underground
objects (Foundations, ducts and other similar items)
and backfilling again.
Estimate the depth of stripping required prior to
earthwork.
Recommend slopes for cuts and fills.
Recommend the practically achievable percent
compaction for pavement subgrade, underground
pipe installation, and for foundations placed on man-
made fill.
Recommendations for quality control procedures for
earthwork construction.
17.5.2. Pavement

For design of concrete pavement, determine the


modulus of subgrade reaction, k, for natural subgrade
soils at 90 percent compaction per ASTM D-1557.
For design of asphalt roads, pavement, determine
CBR values.
17.5.3. Underground Pipe Installation

Describe any special conditions affecting the


installation of underground piping systems.
Give maximum allowable passive soil pressure for
design of underground piping thrust blocks. Also give
coefficient of friction between pipe and surrounding
soil.

18.0 CATHODIC PROTECTION SURVEY REPORT CONTENTS

The report shall outline :

A general description of the fieldwork


The general soil conditions at the site
A description of each type of test which was
undertaken.
Results of tests conducted, including explanations and
analysis.
Plan locating and describing all field tests.

the appropriate electrical resistivity for the site.

19.0 HYDROGEOLOGICAL SURVEY REPORT CONTENTS

The report shall outline


A desk study of the regional and local geological and
hydrogeological conditions
A description of the fieldwork
The general soil conditions at the site
The groundwater conditions at the site
The chemical analysis of the groundwater
Quality of groundwater for use
The potential for exploitation of the groundwater
Potential impact on the local water supplies
Recommendations and design details for water well at
the site

20.0 LANGUAGE

All documents shall be prepared in English language.

21.0 HSE&S

The CONTRACTOR shall comply with the COMPANY’s Policy,


Procedures and Protocols for the Health and Safety and Security of all
personnel involved in this WORK.
