UNID 7 TEST

Unit 7 | Reading
Read the text. Select True or False. Correct the false sentences.

Obsessive Fans
Many celebrities are victims of obsessive fans. In the United States, the phenomenon is known as
celebrity stalking. Everybody is interested in the lives of the rich and famous. Everyone also knows
the celebrities are hunted by fans looking for photos or autographs. But real obsessive fans or
stalkers are something different!
Stalkers think they have a connection with the celebrity. Some imagine they are lovers or relatives
of their victims. All stalkers live and breathe the lives of their victims, and they will do anything to
get near them. Two years ago, a 30-year-old man was jailed after stalking TV reporter Jennifer
Reilly. He wrote her hundreds of letters, he waited for her after work, and he said he was her lover.
He even tried to find her home address. He told his victim: Every celebrity needs a stalker. When a
stalker can't access the victim, they sometimes do terrible things. John Hinckley tried to assassinate
Ronald Reagan because of his obsession with actress Jodie Foster. Tennis star Monica Seles was
attacked by a fan of Steffi Graf. More and more TV and radio reporters are having problems with
stalkers but don't have the level of security of movie or sports stars.
At a recent conference, US broadcasters were given the following advice:
• Take all letters seriously, even if they are nice letters.
• Do not return gifts and letters; save them for the police.
• Do not eat any food sent by a stranger.
• Do not give out personal details on the TV or radio.
• Use bullet-proof glass to protect on-air staff who are visible from outside the station
