Weather and Meteorology of ancient India

+-According to Vedic Principals, the world consists of Agni i.e., fire or heat and Soma (Varun) i.e. water, 12 forms of Sun
(Surya - aditya ) and is the soul of all for those are being and for those who aren't living being. Nature controls by Indra
who is the most powerful god and who kills Vritra, the symbol of the cloud to free waters. Vritra means one who covers
and is derived from the root vri, to cover.

According to R.R.M. Roy the main force of expansion in the Vedic cosmology is Indra, and his chief adversary, the main
force of contraction, is Vritra and Maruts are Indra’s associates. Vedic seers pray boldly to these natural forces and
aspects for bestowing plenty and prosperity on them. Devi Aditi is praised as Devamata - the mother of all natural
energies and she symbolizes the nature and forms of water is considered essential to all forms of life.

According to Rig-veda, the water (‘APAH' ) as a part of the human environment occurs in five forms:

1. Rainwater (Divyah)
2. Natural spring (Sravanti)
3. Wells and canals (Khanitrimah)
4. Lakes (Svayamjah)
5. Rivers (Samudrarthah)

All the 5 elements are merged in Prakriti. According to the Bhagavad Gita, the basic nature of intelligence by which the
Universe exists and functions is called Prakriti. It is described in Bhagavad Gita as the "primal motive force". It is the
essential constituent of the universe and is at the basis of all the activity of the creation. In Sankhya,
philosophy prakriti is comprised of eight elements: earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego. It is
characterized by the three gunas: Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Prakṛti is female while purusha is male.

Astro- meteorology or Meteorological astrology of India is one such branch of ancient India which deals with
understanding thePrakritii.eKnowledge of 5 elements, nature, birds, atmosphere and environmental changes occurring
because of certain planetary alignments which is used for weather forecasting triggered by astronomical phenomenon
of the Major planets like Sun, Moon, Mercury, yearly eclipses and moon phases.
This is a thousand years old weather science which was based on astronomical positions of the stars and constellation
that directly affects or alters the weather situation on Earth. During an Ancient era, astronomers used to note down
the positions and alignment of stars, planets, the Sun, and Moon on certain fixed constellations which directly effects
the seasonal changes occurring on the earth. According to the ancient manuscripts, when certain planets used to
occupy fixed constellations as seen from the Earth those are making harmonious relations to one and another planet’s,
Earthatmospheres experiences positive weather conditions.

As a result of those certain placements, places falling under that constellation experiences good weather in the form of
timely rainfall and soothing winterseason.

For many centuries forecasting in advance, weather was the major trend among the Raj Jyotishi’s in various kingdoms
to know when to plant the crops, fruits, paddies in field and also to get information of advance miseries that can
triggers natural catastrophes among nations in the form of floods, Earthquakes, Famines and bad rainfall etc. Many of
the star positions were used for navigationin the seas, long journeys and even for planning of war with other nations
but majorly they were applied to predict the climatic situation of months in an advance in preparation for harsh winter
and summer seasons.

In ancient India Varaharmihira and others scholars used to study the formation of clouds or pregnancy of clouds or
'GarbhaDharana' process which usually commences around 195 days before the days of their fall or birth or delivery or

According to their sky gazing observations, symptoms of pregnancy used to be detected around 195 days before when
the Moon transits the nakshatra of Purvashadha, commencing from the first day of the lunar month of Margashira.
Clouds those are formed in the dark-half used to come out in the bright-half and those are formed in the day time
usually come out at night and those formed at dawn used to come out in the evening and vice versa.

If it is formed in the eastern direction it usually gives good rainfall in the west. For the measurement of rainfall or
rainwater, the unit of rain gauging was called as ‘Adhaka’. An adhaka is measurement units used for measuring the
quantity of rainfall, in a circular vessel of width 20 fingers in diameter and 8 fingers deep. Four
such Adhakas unitsconstitute a Drona.
The total amount of rainfall in upcoming months is analysed based on the symptoms of cloud conception period,
position of the Sun and the Moon in the particular nakshatra.

Vedic seers used to observe many scientific Factors for clouds conception i.e. how Electric charge produced in the Clouds
responsible for the heavy rainfall during the Vedic era:

Now question arises what is the relation of an electric charge wrt the rainfall? What actually is natural electric charge?

According to Vedic observations, “Mechanism by which the Apah (Moisture based water i.e form of water in
air (Vayu)) undergo in the clouds produces Vidyut (electric charge) and according to modern Meteorologist during
occurrence of very violent motions within a large cloud produces Electrical charge. When two substances are in violent
motion with respect to each other, the parts are often found to be electrically charged, thus reason for producing
lighting and heavy rain.”

According to Vedic Meteorologists all sorts of clouds have no tendencies to produce electrical charges only the clouds
formed via vapours evaporated by the radiation heating from the sun become electrically charged. Reason waters on
being evaporated by radiation heating from the sun get electrically charged that's why we called Apah.

Far better explanation has Been clearly mentioned in Atharveda :

When these Apah set to move violently are called Pravatas (floating clouds). Since the electrical charge is produced in
the floating clouds ( Pravatas), vedic seers named as "Pravatonapat".

In Rig Veda further references are mentioned as:

From all these explanation it is easy to conclude why Vedic seers Called the electrical charge produced in the clouds
formed from vapours evaporated by radiation heating from the sun as Indra. Reason is, Here Indra is acting
as representative from the sun to act as charge producing agent in moving clouds to produce heavy rains. This is the
only reason why lord Indra called as Rain God since from vedic era and in modern time it is the most important physical
force required for the heavy rain for producing thundering at same time because of its charging ability
and sometime it is act as main factor for triggering heavy earthquakes when eclipses triggers in Indra and Varuna
Mandala Nakashtras.
According to the ancient scriptures including those of Garga, Varahamihira, Parashara, they have named four types of
clouds for yearly rainfall predictions:

If the cloud of a year is Abartak, rain will be received in certain places during that year.If it is Sambartak, all parts of the
country will receive good rainfall. If it is the Pushkar cloud quantity of rainfall will be very less during the whole year
and if it is the Drona cloud there will be abundance of rainfall for the whole year.

With cloud observation ancient scholars also studies the ruling 'planet' of the year’:

If planet of the year is Sun – there will be moderate rainfall and if it is the Moon – There will be heavy rainfall for the
whole year. If it is Mars – there will be an insufficient quantity of rainfall. If it is Mercury – There will be good rainfall for
the whole year. If it is Jupiter – there will be very good rainfall for whole year. If it is Venus – Rainfall will be good and if
it is the Saturn – there will be very low rainfall and whole season will be like stormy and windy.

Ancient scholars usually consider three days in the month of Ashadha (June-July) for observation of the atmospheric
conditions to determine the future prospects of rain. These days when in the lunar month of Ashadha Moon passes
through the Nakashtra of Rohini, Swati, and Uttarashadha and respectivelythey are also given name as known as Rohini
, Swati , and Ashadha Yoga .

When the Sun and the Moon are in neutral asterisms there will be winds and no symptoms of cloud movement. When
they travel in feminine nakashtras there will be chances of lightning and phosphorescence’s. When the Sun occupies a
feminine nakashtraand the Moon in a masculinenakashtra there will be good rainfall.

In those ancient days, for predicting the weather scenario and the monsoon panchang-makers usually consider three
different NadiSiddhantas, commonly known as Nadi Chakras.

These are:

(1) Dwinadi Chakra( two Scheme Nakashtra)

(2) TrinadiChakra ( Three Scheme Nakashtra)

(3) Saptanadi Chakra (Seven Scheme Nakashtra)

The calculations and naming of chakras were named after grouping all the nakshatras into two, three, and seven.

The ancient astro-meteorologists used to closely examines the number of signs for drought or scanty and they have
categorized few parametersfor understanding weather scenario.

These signs were based on the groupingof :

(1) Planets and nakshatras

(2) Symptoms at pregnancy of cloud

(3) Wind blow

(4) Rainfall

(5) Planetary conjunctions and planetary conflicts

(6) The union of different genders of planets or nakshatras

(7) Based on the creepers and plants etc.

In Western countries, Johannes Kepler had recordedmany meteorological observations to support his belief that the
conjunction of major planets have strong effects on individual nature and weather scenario on the earth i.eSaturn and
the Sun would produce cold weather.Kepler believed in astrology in the sense that he was convinced that astrological
aspects physically affected humans as well as the weather on Earth. As part of his duties as district mathematician to
Graz, Kepler issued a prognostication for 1595 in which he forecasted peasant uprising, Turkish invasion and bitter cold,
all of which happened and brought him renowned.

Understanding the Astro-meterology of 2018

Based on the Ancient observations, the four days commencing from the "eighth day in the light half ( KrishnaPaksha) of
the month of jyestha (i.e 4 days after the mid of the month of the may and June - from 15th may to 15th June, it can be
varied) fall in may and June month are Known as, "VayuDharana Days (Pregnancy days of Clouds) "

These are the most important days when the movements of the wind seen and observed in the jyestha month freely
from " North-west to East direction carrying full of rich amount of moisture in it".

In Science of Astro-meteorology, these 4 days when the wind is heavy, pressure is quiet low in the environment it
carries lots of moisture in it. Around these period, Moon movement would be seen from " Swati to Visakhanakashtra"
before poornima and it usually gives a vital clue for judging the nature of health of the Pregnancy of the rain-clouds for
upcoming monsoon seasons.

Here observation of the wind direction and its richness or quantity with Apah (moisture) and movement in these
particular 4 days are most important. If there is no wind in these 4 days, we can expect coming months will be much
dry in nature as well as humidity will be more. If in those 4 days there isenough winds i.e like gentle, agreeable and the
sky will be covered by fine bright clouds than there will be the possibility of good rainfall in Monsoon else monsoon will
be a bit delayed and level of humidity will be more.

If there is rainfall during " Swati to Vishaka Nakshatra for full 4 days " then we can say with surety that the monsoon is
near to shower full of insistent rainfall in Shravana to Karttika Month (August to November) else there will be the
possibility of drought like situation in the rainy season.

In those ancient days, it gives an easiest way to time coming of the monsoon season via our own sense of judgement
and clear understanding for rainfall arrival during the month of Sharavna and the Karttika month. The only thing you
need is to keep on observing the movement in the sky, the direction, and pregnancy of winds and clouds.

Role of 9 days of extreme Heat in vayuDharan Process of 2018

What is Nautapa( 9 days of Extreme Heat)

When Sun Entered in the Constellation of the Moon ( Rohini) it travels to the 9 Nakashtras and start grabbing the heat
and because of this reason it is called as Nau-Tapa, it usually triggers inconsistent warm and heat in weather. These
Nine nights are called 9 days of year when the Sun is most closest near the Earth and causes severe heat and warm
weather almost in all the states of India or in other countries as well.

In the year 2018 these 9 days of extreme and furious heat started on 25th of May 2018 and completed its cycle on 3rd
of June 2018 which has ended the era of extreme volatile heat. During this cycle, Mars and ketu conjunction in the
amrita nadi (Ruled by moon) has dried all the moisture content present in the atmosphere. Because of this scenario it
has improved overall weather a bit in summer season but the level of moisture in atmosphere has made the warm
weather very intense, as sun had already joined the Mars Nadi (Agni Nadi).

With entry of the Sun in Rohini Nakshatra 9 days of Scorching heat usually starts in any season. This time Sun has
entered in Rohini Nakshatra on 25th of May 2018 at 7.53 pm and remained in rohini till June 3.

It has been seen that whenever this transits has triggered the rainfall during the Nau-Tapa process it has given low
rainfall and according to the ancient science observation it is called as the rohini throat. These 9 days are like 9 days of
pregnancy of clouds where more the heat generates due to Sun and Moon movement more it can carry rain causing
clouds for coming monsoon seasons.

The mother earth bears these days for the goodwill of mankind. Because of extreme heat of the Sun in Jala tattva of
Rohini Nakashtras it used to fastens the cycle of Condensation process from the coastal regions that's the only reason
why it is called as Monsoon Garabhdharan period.

This year process of Nau-Tapa started when Sun entered on Rohini Nakashtra on 25th of May from 10 degree 23 ' 40'
and it has remained till 8th of june 2018 , 23’ degree 40” min.

During this period the sun which is considered as to be a symbol of glory and furious heat enters the moon's
constellation Rohini and takes its constellation fully under its influence.
Due to this only reason level of heat has increased at greater level and it usually triggers storms and heavy blow of
wind on earth which we can see in the month of Ashada. This year we had longer version of Ashada Month and at same
time Sun was opposing the Saturn which has triggered maximum activity in the sun solar regions, causes rain storms
and solar wind on the earth.

Understanding the Scientific Reason

Scientifically unknown reason behind this year scorching heat was could be due to the inner solar activities happening
in the sun which was started On 3rd of May 2018 in the sun inner surface, and one of Coronal hole has been found
toward Earth facing (toward Northern Hemisphere) and has sent high speed solar wind stream towards earth which
has triggered a Small sunspot region 2712 and produced a couple of minor solar flares. During this period a C3.3 solar
flare peaking at 17:14 UTC, strongest event has been recorded so for by the Scientists. Although, Sunspot region 2712
remained in fairly small region but fairly enough that scientist can able to notify it in solar region.Though it’s tough to
say its direct influence on earth region.

Till now scientists are never able to understand The Sun's influence on the Earth's climatic changes and it is still
complicated but researchers are slowly figuring out how the solar wind can indirectly affect clouds over the poles. Its
effects on the Earth’s weather and climate are still a mystery for most of the researchers. According to Joanna
Wendell research has been found that the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) can cause certain effects in the Earth’s
ionosphere but its impact on changes in climate remains still a mystery.

According to Lam, et al., there is strong correlations found between the changes in the IMF and atmospheric pressure
anomalies for the Earth’s polar troposphere which can results change in the atmospheric pressure to cause changes in
cloud physics and thus it can be said that it have a wider effect on weather and climate.

The authors saw effects in the lower troposphere, which were driven by electric potential difference between the
ionosphere and the Earth’s surface, days sooner than in the mid-to-upper troposphere. The findings support the idea
that the Mansurov effect is linked with changes to cloud microphysics, which can then in turn have an effect on

Understanding Medinijyotish Reason

It has been seen that whenever Jupiter and Saturn are closely or loosely conjugate, influences, Aspects sun around 10
to 20 degrees in any sign high amount of solar activities triggers in surface area of the sun and we have seen it usually
increases for the whole month. Such solar activities also been noticed during Lunar and Solar eclipses too but depends
on eclipse type, Half or full or partial etc.

During these combustion or conjugation periods " Black Dark shaft " in Solar disc usually been observed with different
shapes and sizes in addition increasing amount of temperature and heat also been noticed in earth atmosphere too.

This has been noticed around 17th of August in year 2015 when sun ingresses on Leo and was found closely Conjugated
with the Jupiter in a close combustion state with the orbital distance of 9 degree opposite to the earth, "
Tamasakilakas or Sunspot " appeared in the Sun. Same is the case, when In august 2015 Scientist has observed two sun
spots with rod and key like shape. During these sunspot phases’ major break in power (Electricity) and satellite
Communication channel observed.

In "August-September" 2015 sun-spot impact has been seen more in toward the Northern Hemisphere Regions those
were closer to the line of Cancer.
The rise of temperature in atmospheres also been noticed after these dark shafts. It has been further noticed that
during these dark shafts raining clouds usually unable to shower rain and weather behaves strangly and also raises
possibilities of earthquakes in those areas where-ever these sunspots appears geographically.

(BrihatSamhita, Adityachar) .

" Tamasakilakas " or Dark Shafts in the Solar disc region is an ancient wisdom on Sunspots research as described by
Acharya Varahamihira in Brihat Samhita around 500 AD when there was no science and any scientists available to
analyse an impact of Sunspots. These shows Ancient astronomers were already known to the most of the Facts in

Current Scenario of heat for 2018

During this year Nau-Tapa Process most of the regions of India and those were living in western region on india has
experienced relaxed weather from 1st of june 2018 to 3rd of june onward. When Moon crossed the moola nakashtra
and reaches to Poorvashada with saturn in Soumya nadi, it has given smooth weather condition around this time but
major problem of the extreme temperature, dry and warm weather was remained persistently until the Saturn and
Jupiter turns into direct motion around month of July and September 2018. This year people of central India i.e
Madhya-pradesh has observed relaxed and soothing weather scenario when Sun was transited in gemini Sign in Ardara

Problem with this year summer season was regarding placement of the mars and Ketu, ahead than sun and it has been
seen that whenever mars crosses the sun it used to dry up all the cloud those were meant for heavy rain falling
especially in Amrita nadi. This nadi is specially considered for good rainfall for 2-3 continuous days if at the same time
beneficial planets are transiting over Amrita nadi. This year it has given warm weather with no rainfall in the month of
May-June 2018.

When Sun reaches to Mrig-shara nakashtra in agni nadi Level of moisture used to increase in Coastal and some other
regions of southern India. This year it has increased the chances of rainfall but the intensity of heat and moisture in
atmosphere was still remained same.

This we have also experienced for northern region of India too, even Weather was bit relaxed from the Scorching heat
of the summer.
Astrology Meteorological year 2018 :Vayu-Dharan Process

This year Vayu Dharan process started from " 15th of May 2018 " onward when moon was entered in Jyestha
Amavasya and sun was in Taurus Sign and those 8 light half days started from "15th of May to 22nd of May 2018". In
Those 8 days Venus was in front of the Moon, Mercury was behind the sun and moon, Mars and Ketu were in trine to
the Sun and Moon which helped a lot for a good VayuDharan process this year.

This shows that this year Vayu Dharan process was very intense and warm weather ended on 22nd of May onward
when actually those 8 light days were in the verge of end.

After those 8 light half days, 4 Major Vayu Dahran Days started around "26th of May to 29th of May 2018 " when
moon was transited from "Swati to visakha Nakshatra around poorniamsya (Full moon day)" carried huge Amount of
moisture from the north west coastal regions to rest of the India closely in contact with the Jupiter, Mercury opposite
to Moon/Jupiter and Venus was in trine to the Moon. This has clearly explained that why this year Monsoon for whole
India was much better than those earlier years. This year Southern regions of India, North western states i.e including
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and coastal regions of North West of Indian states has received plenty of rainfall.
Only in few of the states of Gujarat, and some states of north has received normal rainfall due to presence of two warm
planets in Amrita Nadi ruling north Indian states.

During these 4 days of Vayu-Dharan Process Temperature was around 46 to 47 Degree that shows Planetary alignment
those were featuring around 26th to 29th of june triggered high temperature and maximum moisture process.

From 29th of May onward we have seen gradual decrease in the temperature almost in most of the states of India.

As per the Sky met Weather, both maximum and minimum temperatures seen over Delhi and adjoining regions of
Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. In fact maximum temperatures have touched around 47°C in these 4
days. Hot weather conditions were observed due to the dry and hot north-westerly winds which were blowing over
Delhi and NCR.Due to close movements over Scorpio, soothing dust storm was appeared over Delhi and others north of
Indian states by the end of the month when Moon will further conjugated over Sagittarius and Capricorn.
Symptoms one can observe in any Meteorological year:
Did anyone have observed good winds, cool breeze or Rainfall during Gharabh Dharan period? If one has missed that
opportunity here is an another way to practically observe the weather in any season days; either it winter or summer.

Amateurs Rainmans or sky gazers can observer these factors or weather scenario during any of the monsoon seasons.

Below are the basic observational points required for mundane analysis of rainfall for any rainy season?. One can
carefully follow these for better future rain prediction.

1) See the direction of the wind first; it should be from North- east/ west to south. See the speed; See the depth; See
the content of moisture in it, it can Show how warm or cold it is. See the level of storm factor in it.If it is stormy in
nature Chances of pregnancy will be wash away by the fierce wind.If the wind is full of cold and smooth in movement,
rainfall will fall soon. The direction of winds shows how it will cover the moisture in the atmosphere; usually if air is
smooth moisture will always be in intact with the wind.

2) See the cloud movement from Northwest to South in the sky. Observe its motion - Moving or it is still or stays for a
much longer period or not. See the colour of the clouds. See how close clouds are moving toward the surface. More
they are closer to the surface better will be chances are for cold weather and cool breeze. During the day of rainfall,
there will be slight warmness in the environment.

3) Note down the atmospheric pressure if it is too much humidity in the atmosphere with Warm weather or if it is the
hot windy environment Rain will be delayed. If it is a cool breeze in air rain will follow soon. You can observe the
content of water in Atmosphere. If it is high-pressure weather will be good but it will delay rainfall on coming days. If it
is Low pressure after some period of time rainfall will be there soon when the moon will transit to Jala Nadis with
nodes or Jala Grahas around Mercury or Venus in Jala signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces)

3) If there are blackish or bluish clouds appears in sky and are very close to the surface or place where they
appear rainfall will come soon within 2-3 days soon after Surya enters in Ardara Nakashtra. Whenever, Sun will be with
Mercury chances of rainfall will be more especially in Eastern and Northern states of India.

4) Carefully observe the wind intensity, Speed, Motion, denseness; if it is stormy, dry and warm in nature rain will be
delayed. Hot winds have the capacity to clear the low pressure in air.

5) If during the Sankranti period some rainfall has come, or you have observed water content in the air, or Cold factor
in wind it’s an indication rainfall will be good in upcoming monsoon season soon after Ardara parvesh of the sun.

6) Observe the birds, animals and aquatic animal’s movement in the sky and land both. If you observe lots of birds
moving in the sky especially those came around Swati nakshatra then chances of rainfall will be high in your
environment and rainfall will be good.Birds sounding in environment indicates that weather will be good. Their
movement and nature show the intuition they got from nature.

This clearly shows that the ancient wisdom was much advanced then the modern scientific tools as they had observed
the nature via their intuitions and many of the nature tools and science of time - Jyotish. There is a huge difference
between the scientific tools and the wisdom of sages; that science detects and studies the weather via astronomical
and automatic machinery tools i,e remote sensing technologies, satellites images and modular software’s to study the
conditions on the day of observation of the cloud but ancient wisdom used to study it much earlier even before the
event has happened in future. Now is the time modern weather forecasters or medina jyotish researches should take a
leaf out of this wisdom to explore more on ancient knowldge for the benefits of mankind.
