Fajitas and mojitos are a cool combo., with the crisp flavour of rum providing a refreshing counterpoint to the heat of the fajitas. Celebrate summer’s arrival by hosting a pool party that highlights these two warm-weather favourites. The menu makes a stylish departure from typical summer fare of “bier ‘n braaivleis”. And since both the mojitos and fajitas can be customised to individual tastes, everyone’s sure to enjoy themselves.
INVITATIONS Paint a Picture
As this is a casual fare no need for anything formal. Consider using one of our photos from this article in an email and then below add the party details.
DECORATIONS Papel Picado
String up our traditional decorative paper banner that is handmade by artisans in Mexico. The brightly colored tissue paper is handcut, using chisels and a top pattern as a guide. Although the tissue paper was originally brought to Europe from China and then to New Spain, the indigenous people of Mexico had already been using handmade paper, along with the tradition of cut decorative and ceremonial images for centuries. Today, this traditional paper art is used as decorations for all occasions and gives an immediately festive look to any celebration.

LINEN Pool Party
Your guest list and the size of your space will determine the best seating arrangement for your party. If space allows, you may choose to serve your meal at one large dining table or the casual nature of this party also lends itself easily to a buffet, with the fajitas and their accompaniments arranged on one large central table and seating scattered all around your pool. Colourful table linens are the simplest way to add style to an outdoor gathering, so think bright summer colours like red, coral, and hot pink.

Looking for an easy table centrepiece, buy a whole mixed batch of our colourful luminaries. Fill these with a bit of sand to weigh them down, lined down the centre of your table. Then place a battery tea light in each one – a table centrepiece and candlelight in one. These can also be used to create other focal points in and around the party area as well as to line pathways.

TABLE TOP TIP: Chip ‘n Dip Sombrero
I saw this idea on Ugly Betty and I thought it was genius! Basically you take a sombrero hat and push down a bowl into the top of the hat. This bowl you fill with your spicy salsa. Then around the entire brim of the hat you fill it with tortilla chips.
PLACE SETTINGS Party Proof
Selecting break-resistant dinnerware for an outdoor party doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. Our Rice Melamine dishes and serving pieces feature lively colours and capture the bright look of summer. Also, crafted from bamboo, our Wooden Flatware is easy to use and dispose of.

MENU Fast Fajitas
The key to making fajitas for a crowd is to do as much advance preparation as possible. Several hours before the party begins, marinate the chicken and steak for the fajitas, and grate some cheese. Prepare your guacamole and chopped salad - store each in a covered glass dish in the refrigerator. For starters, serve classics like cheesy nachos and tortilla chips with a variety of salsas, cream cheese based dips and guacamole of course.
speedy gonzales nachos
INGREDIENTS Packet of Tortilla Chips Jar of Salsa Packet of Grated Cheese Small Tub of Sour Cream Jar of pre made Guacamole DIRECTIONS Arrange the tortilla chips on a microwave oven safe plate so they cover the entire plate. Add the salsa on top of the chips and spread all around. Then sprinkle on all the grated cheese so it completely covers the chips. Place the nachos into the microwave for at least 3 minutes so the cheese completely melts. Once the cheese is completely melted then remove the plate from the oven. Add sour cream right in the middle of the nacho plate. Place scoops of the guacamole around the chips. Make sure to serve the nachos while they are still warm.
A self-serve mojito bar is a great approach to cocktails because it frees you up to raise your own glass and join the fun. Use colorful table linen runners to create a festive look, and select barware that’s appropriate to the occasion. The right glassware is essential for stylish entertaining. Our Rice Acrylic Collection includes an acrylic jug for rum and soda water and an authentic mojito glass tumbler, with a tall, chunky shape that’s perfect for muddling mint for this cool, refreshing drink. If you prefer wine, our collection also includes a wine glass. Present the other ingredients for your mojitos in rustic yet stylish server ware like our metal tin buckets. A tumbler can be filled with simple syrup, and the mini buckets are perfectly sized to hold quartered limes and sliced fruit like watermelon and mango, a delicious addition to the classic mojito. Alternatively, glass bowls, jars or stacked cake plates filled with whole limes and bunches of fresh mint, becomes a colourful bar centerpiece. For a personal touch, identify the contents of each acrylic pitcher on a hand-lettered label attached with twine, and provide mixing directions for the mojitos on a recipe card. See details in this article under Menu. Bar tools are another must for a successful mojito party. Nothing matches the taste of fresh-squeezed lime juice, so make sure you have several lime squeezers on hand. Your guests will also need muddlers to crush the fruit and mint at the bottom of their mojito glass before adding rum and soda water.

Mix It Up As mentioned before the main focus of this party is the “Make your own Mojitos Bar”. And for a bit more colour here is a delicious watermelon mojito recipe.
INGREDIENTS 4 large mint leaves 1/2 lime 1 tablespoon superfine sugar 125g seedless watermelon, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 3/4 cup), plus a small wedge for garnish 60ml white rum 1/2 cup ice cubes DIRECTIONS In a heavy large glass, combine mint, lime, and sugar. Using a muddler, mash together mint and lime until sugar is dissolved. Add watermelon, and muddle until broken down. Stir in rum and ice cubes. Pour into a serving glass and garnish with a watermelon wedge. Serve immediately.
The refreshing fruit drinks known as aguas frescas originated in Mexico, where street vendors often sell them on steamy days. Made with whatever fruit is ripe and in season (strawberry, watermelon and paw paw are popular choices), the drinks are a refreshing alternative to alcoholic beverages. So whip up a batch and serve the punch in our melamine daisy drink dispenser. INGREDIENTS Seasonal fresh fruit 1 cup water Simple syrup (created by mixing together equal parts water and sugar and boiling until syrupy) Ice DIRECTIONS Rinse and slice the fruit and place it in a blender. Add water and simple syrup, and blend the mixture until it is smooth. Serve in a jug or dispenser filled with ice, or use an oversized glass vase and use a ladle to fill each glass.

Crack! Cascarones or confetti eggs are festive, hollowed-out chicken eggs filled with confetti or small toys, originating in Mexico. In Spanish, cascarón means eggshell. Cascarones are similar to the Easter eggs popular in many other countries. Decorated, confetti-filled cascarones may be thrown or crushed over the recipient’s head to shower him or her with confetti. In addition to Easter, cascarones have become popular for occasions including birthdays, Halloween, Cinco de Mayo, Dieciséis, Day of the Dead, and weddings (wedding cascarones can be filled with birdseed). Having a cascarón broken over one’s head is said to bring good luck.

Jeremiah is turning One, It’s time to celebrate and have some fun! A party is planned that’s sure to take flight, so join with us, Come fly a Kite!

BY TRACEY LAU WWW.TRACEYLAU.COM/BLOG
We awoke yesterday to the most glorious blue sky, speckled ever so slightly with fluffy, marshmallow clouds, a day that could not have been any more perfect for Jeremiah’s Kite Party.
So, for the Kite Party, I started with blue sky and lush green grass, added in outdoors flying kites, and outdoors in the park takes me to gingham, throw in some yummy treats and this is what I ended up with: Jeremiah’s Dessert Table! Gorgeous little bottles of juice, Jars of Lollies (we had M&M’s, Bon Petite, Spearmint Leaves and Jelly Beans), Individual Milk Chocolates, Homemade Vanilla Meringue, Little Jelly Pots, Fairy Floss, Vanilla Bean Kite Cookies, Vanilla Bean cupcakes, Cloud Marshmallows, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Caramel Popcorn and the CAKE! After our lunch and a serious sugar rush, the children donned their paint clothes and set about creating a masterpiece on the Kite kits I had purchased. A little drying time (mmm more time for some sugar) and then the kites were created. We live opposite an open reserve, the perfect place to test out each child’s new handiwork. They worked a treat. Children (and a few adults) were running in all directions, colourful kites were everywhere. It worked out the ideal finish to a wonderful day.
We couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out, and I must say Jeremiah enjoyed himself, especially his first ever taste of cake. I think he is hooked.
Pat a cake, pat a cake, Bakers man. Bake me a cake as fast as you can. Pat it, prick it. Mark it with a B. Put in the oven for Bailey and me!
It is customary at Bailey’s school, and I think most schools around the world to bring cake on your child’s birthday. So when Bailey’s 2nd birthday rolled round the corner, I decided to let the little ones in on the act as well. My mom and I baked cupcakes, but left them uniced. We whipped up batches and batches of all different coloured butter cream icing and then filled lots of little containers with allsorts of sweets and sprinkles. And no party would be complete without some printables, so we decided to make a bold and bright colour scheme as a last shout to the waning summer! Mango orange and hot pink plaid was partnered with a classic cupcake on bunting, food picks and sweet jar labels. We were lucky that the sun came out in full force, and the party could be set up in the school playground straight after lunch. The train jungle gym was decorated with the bunting and tissue paper poms and flowers made out of coloured napkins. For little party favours, fabric flowers were pinned onto little sticks that initially served as flower arrangements, and then post party, guests picked their flower of choice and pinned it to their lapels. Besides all the little kiddies singing so sweetly to Bailey “Happy Birthday”, the highlight of my day was when a little German boy overcame his shyness to ask if he could have “ein grosse Blume” – he wanted one of the tissue paper poms for his room – what a compliment!
Combine two things in one, in this case the birthday cake was made into an activity, by having the kids ice and decorate their own cupcakes. There is less preparation for you, keeps the kids busy and you save money too!
BAKE IT, LET THEM MAKE IT
Decorations were made our of tissue paper and paper napkins and the kids loved them so much they wanted to take them home. Plus the teachers were keen to learn how to make them – another party activity!
