NOTE: ‘lab’ could be replaced with ‘it’; however, the


sentence would sound awkward.
Pronouns are special words that replace nouns to avoid repeating them.

adjectives?

The technician is new.

The technician is new.


Adjectives add descriptions to nouns and pronouns- telling which one, how many,
what kind, color, or shape they are.

Adverbs add information- such as when, where, why, or how- to verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs, or whole sentences.
What are prepositions?

Prepositions show position in space and time and are followed by nouns to form
prepositional phrases.
What are conjunctions?
Students still visited the lab and the media center
while the computers were broken.
Conjunctions are connecting words- such as and, but, and or- and words that begin
dependent clauses- such as because, since, when, while, and although.
What are interjections?
Wow, James is a valuable employee.
Interjections interrupt a sentence to show surprise or other emotions and are rarely
used in standard written English.
