YSEALI Seeds for Future 2018

FINAL Report

Coffee Warriors Empowerment

Feb - October 2018
Vietnam & Indonesia & US
I - General Information

Vietnam and Indonesia are two of the top coffee producers in ASEAN and in the world
(Vietnam : 2nd and Indonesia : 4th ). Coffee in those countries began with its colonial history,
integrated as a part of local culture and took part in the growth of the whole ASEAN region. The
recent transition from second to third movement coffee in ASEAN will transform the whole
industry in the next decades by elevating coffee in those regions to the artisanal level (like wine),
rather than just a commodity. Coffee will be independently procured and crafted by individuals
mindful of origin and by mind-set conscious of economically viable, socially inclusive and
environmentally sustainable way. This also involves improvements at all stages of production
(growing, harvesting, processing, roasting and brewing) and stronger relationships between key
stakeholders (growers, traders, and roasters). In other words, it is the sustainable wave of coffee
(specialty coffee).

This project is about creating a platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge between
coffee stakeholders(especially farmers) of two countries in order to take advantage of the
third wave of coffee and empower them with better practices under “specialty coffee”
standard.

A a couple of key stakeholders from both Vietnam and Indonesia will be strictly selected to join
two exchanging camps that take place consecutively in two largest growing regions of Arabica in
ASEAN.
