The bard is coming to Birchgrove this month in an outdoor production of The Taming of the Shrew at Mort Bay Park’s Village Green. The Shakespeare on the Green production will give the romantic comedy a contemporary twist, with Leichhardt’s Norton Street the scene for the story of the two daughters of the wealthy Baptista. Katherine is known as a bad tempered shrew, while younger sister Bianca is young and sweet. But Bianca’s suitors face a challenge, as Baptista will not allow Bianca to marry unless Katherine does first. This is the second production for Shakespeare on the Green, which performed a well received season of Twelfth Night on a bowling green in Waverton last year. Director Sher Guhl said that she thought the former dry dock area at Birchgrove would be an ideal spot

Cat Martin will play the role of Katherine in an outdoor production of ‘Taming of the Shrew.’

for Taming of the Shrew. “It’s going to be very physical, with actors using the walls around to climb and jump off and the council park seats, we have included them all within the action,” Sher said. The production uses professional actors, and the comedy, colourful characters, relationships and love story should appeal to a wide audience, Sher said. “It’s a very clear and accessible production, so I am sure that people who didn’t like Shakespeare in high school will really enjoy this. It’s one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, and it’s very funny,” she said. “It’s a true battle of the sexes, and of course Shakespeare’s comedies always have a happy ending.”

The Taming of the Shrew February 22, 23, 24 and 29 and March 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. At the Village Green, Mort Bay Park, Birchgrove. Tickets on sale on the night from 6.30pm, performance begins 7.30pm.
