also spurring investments for manufacturing alternative refrigerant gases.

“Wastewater Treatment Gets a New Spin” brought forth the challenges
chemical makers face when it comes to water usage. Water scarcity and
quality issues as well as regulatory pressures are prompting plants to consider
ways to make fuller use of their wastewater. However, Editor-at-Large Seán
Ottewell covers a variety of developments in membranes and filtration that
promise to enhance wastewater treatment and reuse.
Security also plays a crucial role in plants — Cyber attackers can gain
access in several ways often overlooked by sites. Jeff Melrose of Yokogawa Cor-
poration offers some strategies as well as specific steps to take to help improve
the security of your wireless network.

“Say something,” urges impassioned Editor-in-Chief Mark Rosenzweig in
May’s editorial, “Save the Chemical Safety Board.” The potential demise of
the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) due to pro-
posed budget cuts promises to undermine safety in the chemical industry, he
warns. Rosenzweig argues that eliminating the CSB won’t save much money;
its 2017 budget is only about $12 million. Read more of Rosenzweig’s plea
and why you should speak up at http://goo.gl/CYGsQG.
In this month’s Solid Advice column, Tom Blackwood recommends talk-

Fortunately, as our cover story “Data: Finding What’s Hiding Gets Easier,”

Furthermore, greater emphasis on condition monitoring to foster predictive
maintenance and optimization of asset performance is leading to the installa-
tion of more sensors to check vibration, bearing temperature and a host of other
parameters. For instance, technical developments in sensors, such as for online
corrosion monitoring (see this issue’s “Refineries: Rethink Corrosion Monitor-

backup power for the refrigeration system used to cool nine containers holding

caused no casualties. Editor-in-Chief Mark Rosenzweig in his editorial “Ponder
Harvey’s Hard Knocks,” shares a message from Dr. Sam Mannan, director of
the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center: even though the storm didn’t
wreak widespread havoc, there’s still room for improvement in process safety
and land-use/disaster planning.
Safety and security go hand-in-hand, so in this issue, we also take a closer
look at cyber security. Breaches often arise from the actions of staff, contractors
or vendors at a facility. So, plants are ramping up efforts to thwart such cyber
threats as well as those posed by intruders getting on site.

CHEMICAL PROCESSING BEST PRACTICES SERIES

CHEMICAL PROCESSING’S 2018 WEBINAR LINEUP!

Each Webinar features industry experts on the topic being discussed and also includes a Q&A session with all attendees.
We have a full line up this year with some of the most compelling topics challenging the chemical processing industry.
Thousands of your peers have registered to participate over the past eight years. Please join Chemical Processing and
register for one of more of these thought-provoking and educational Webinars.

Best Practices Webinar Topics

Compressed Air: May 15 | State of the Chemical Industry: June 21 | Industry 4.0: October 16

Six-Part Process Safety Series

Last year’s series was so successful that we’ve expanded it to six installments this year. Processing
often poses risks — many operations involve high temperatures or elevated pressures, flammable
or toxic materials, or other hazards. While plants emphasize that safety is the top priority, achieving
it can pose obvious and not-so-obvious difficulties. This six-part webinar series, hosted by Dr. Sam
Mannan, regents professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas
A&M University and director of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, will tackle issues es-
sential for attaining effective process safety including leadership and management issues, regula-
tory issues, competency programs, runaway reactions and more.
Dates: February 8, April 12, June 14, August 16, October 11, December 4

Dust Control Roundtable

Once again in 2018, we are bringing together industry leaders in hazard identification, evaluation and control for combus-
tible dust hazards for an exclusive roundtable discussion. Our moderator, Guy Colonna, division director of the National
Fire Protection Association, will challenge our panelists with tough questions in order to increase awareness of the hazards
and the available safeguards of fires and explosions within combustible solids processing and handling industries. Attend-
ees will walk away with sound ideas and solutions to eliminate threats. To ensure we address issues most critical to you
in your efforts to safeguard workers, facilities and the surrounding communities, let us know what you need most in your
work to manage combustible dust hazards.
Date: September 18

ALL TIGERFLEX™ AND KURI TEC®
FOOD GRADE HOSES ARE NOW
PHTHALATE FREE!
What does this mean?
Tigerflex™ and Kuri Tec® food grade hoses are now manufactured from
all phthalate free materials. As a leading manufacturer of hoses for the
food & pharmaceutical industries, our food grade hoses have always used
extremely high purity PVC materials, meeting various FDA, NSF, USDA and
3A standards. The hoses will still maintain all their previous standards, but
with the added benefit of now being phthalate free at no additional cost.

Why did we do it?

Due to the growing desire in the food processing and
pharmaceutical industries to use products that do not
contain phthalates, we’ve taken the industry leading posi-
tion of eliminating them from our entire line of food grade
Tigerflex™ and Kuri Tec® products. As always, we strive
to provide our customers with the highest purity products
as you’ve come to expect from Kuriyama.

exceptional temperature control automatically holds discharge
temperatures to extremely close tolerances – within 1°C or less, while
providing rapid response to changing process conditions.

Whether you require jacketed heating or other process liquid heating

applications, Pick eliminates BTU losses for 100% energy efficiency.
This alone could save Larry’s company up to 17% in fuel costs, which is
enough to make anyone’s heart go pit-a-pat.

That is precisely what flat lining can do to a guy.

Manage Your Steam Trap Population with

TLV’s is the first diagnostic

instrument to test a steam trap AND
make an automatic judgment of its
operating condition.

’s intrinsically safe design

records both temperature and
ultrasonic levels to identify dangerous
blocked steam traps, or quantify
steam loss. This combination
improves site safety, reduces cost,
and efficiently allocates
maintenance expense.

The operator needs only to hold

the probe tip on the trap for 15
seconds— then
collects and measures data to
judge the operating condition
automatically. It compares the
measurements against
empirical test data of over
4,000 trap selections, and can
store 1,600 individual tests.
Data is then uploaded to
TrapManager® database
software for detailed
analysis and reporting.
(Software compatible with
Windows XP/Vista/7)

about productivity,
reliability, safety, and
energy efficiency
benefits for your site.
